Francisco Fernandez was married to Mary Rose Samonte Fernandez living a simple life

in Sta. Mesa Manila. Francisco, a.k.a Kiko, was a messenger in a known bank in Makati who

loves drinking alcohol, street gambling and was sometimes in certain occasions caught taking

drugs. Mary Rose Marchan on the other hand, had a more stable job than Kiko. She works as a

teller in the same bank where Kiko was working. Although Kiko was not rich he inherited from

his family a certain house and lot which they made as their conjugal home.

Mary Rose loves taking risks just to augment their financial status and invested on a lot

of things. Since Rose was more knowledgeable when it comes to money matters, Kiko did not

bother to question all the decisions of the wife regarding their money and very few properties

and was just concerned with his vices being satisfied.

Mary Rose become depressed and frustrated with their situation where she was too

engrossed with trying to push their familys income to an acceptable level while her husband

Kiko was contented with his current state and left the entire burden on the wifes shoulder.

Eventually, due to unfortunate events and mismanagement of expenses because of the

husbands misgivings, the debts grew and the couples jobs could no longer sustain a desirableway of living. The Husband, besides the fact that he was suffering from alcoholism and drug

addiction, he also insisted on helping his relatives in their financial constraints. This was the

cause of most of their disagreements.

One day Mary Rose decided to work in Australia where she luckily landed a receptionist

job in a dental clinic facility. She left the country with her husband and their only daughter

Mariela who was then five years old. She continuously supported them with her monthly

remittances with a promise to come home eventually once their debts where all paid and that

she has enough money to set up a business and wont need to leave the country again until

    after three months.

Few months have passed and no money was given to the husband. He just found out

from a letter coming from Mary Rose that she had found a partner in Australia and has decided

to live there for good. This brought the husband extreme depression and anxiety. Despite the

fact that Kiko was now emotionally unstable, He entertained a new woman in his life by the

name of Christina Sabado. He had three daughters from her and they both lived like husband

    and wife.

Unfortunately the debts left by the Mary Rose had their toll on the husband. The house

was foreclosed by the Bank and they had to transfer to the squatters area located in Payatas

Quezon City. This brought to Kikos hatred of his ex-wife and eventual hatred towards their

daughter Mariela who was spitting image of Mary Rose.

Due to his hatred, he did not want to be associated with his daughter anymore and had

his new wife to deal with his daughters everyday life and duties in the household and in school.

Every time Kiko would come home drunk, he would utter every word of disgust against her

mother for leaving him with all the debts he thinks that her mother herself caused and while

doing so, battered the new wife for the reason that she also might do the same thing to him.

Because of this everyday scenario, her step mom including her step sisters treated her badly

and she literally became like a household helper in the house of his own father. Mariela became

the personal yayas of her young sisters in their studies and was forced to stop from further

attending to her classes eventually. She obligated herself on the service of her sisters just to

please them and thus would lessen the hate being felt by her step mom towards her.

Their familys financial status has gone from bad to worse that they might all need to

stop instead of only her who had to do the sacrifice. This led Mariela to work as a waitress in a

certain night club in Makati avenue red light dirstrict. Despite being a minor, she was allowed to

work there because the owner was a close friend of her step mom. She never received her

salary because her step mom got it directly from the owner of the club. Mariela was treated

badly by her boss and co-workers.

Mariela still wanted to study the same way her step sisters are enjoying it but she knew it

wasnt possible. She made an arrangement with her step mom and her alcoholic dad that if she

can bring home enough money to support the schooling of her younger sisters including her

she can come back to studying but still be working the next school year.

Mariela never got back to studying because everytime she would open up the topic to

her step mom, she doesnt get any clear answer and she ends up being scolded and beaten by

her step mom while her fathers just around the corner either asleep due to drunkenness or

outside the house sulking into sadness and sometimes cursing how miserable his life has

become because of his ex-wife who ran off to another country with a promise of a better life for

them but instead left him with a life of sadness and indebtedness.

Rose went out searching for her daughter to have their usual dinner at home with the

    family
