WHAT IS PAPER? Step 1
Trees are cut down in the forest and are then sent to a paper mill.
Step 2
At the paper mill, a machine removes the bark from the wood
Step 3The bark is chopped into very small pieces with a chipper.
Step 4The wood chips are cooked until they turn into a soft, slippery pulp or slurry.
Step 5Now the soft, slippery paper pulp or slurry is poured into a container for drying and
flatting into paper
WHY DO WE SAVE PAPER?
Saves trees, saves energy, saves water, chemicals and utilized in making of paper
Reduce garbage Reduce pollution Trees supply oxygen for our environment. Trees give homes and refuge to our wildlife. Trees prevent soil from being eroded and washed
away.
HOW TO SAVE PAPER AND TREES?
Use both sides of the paper Reuse gift bags, bows and event paper to
make something unique Plant a tree Write small, (but legible) so the paper will
last longer Don’t waste paper by making silly notes and
pictures and passing them in class to your friends /
Donate old magazines, comics and storybooks which you no longer need or read to charities, and hospitals
DO YOU KNOW?
It takes 24 trees to make one ton of newspaper Every tree provides oxygen enough for 3
people to breathe. If each individual save one sheet of paper per
day, then 40,000 trees are saved per year Papermaking fibers can typically be recycled
5-7 times before they become too short to be recycled again
