Goals
• Consolidate and integrate existing data on pesticides
• Make pesticide information available and accessible to all
• Provide a resource for scientists, advocates, regulators, IPM managers and the public
WaterPIC Objectives
• Harmonize datasets under one roof
• Accelerate analysis of pesticide impacts on the environment, including use trends
• Facilitate a greater understanding of relationships between pesticide use and environmental impacts in water
• Create an easy to use and easy to understand tool for regulators, scientists, watershed groups, and the general public
WaterPIC Datasets
• DPR Pesticide Use Reporting (PUR) data• Water quality monitoring data
– USGS– DPR– CA Water Boards: SWAMP (next iteration)
• Geospatial information– RWQCB TMDL watershed delineations– CalWater 2.2.1 watershed delineations– USGS HUC watersheds delineations– 303d TMDL List of impaired waterways and rivers, lakes, streams (next
iteration)
• Aquatic toxicity – EPA AQUIRE data
• Water quality criteria – U.S. EPA, CA, Canada, other countries
WaterPIC Potential Uses
• Facilitates development of water quality monitoring programs
• Provides a first approximation correlation between pesticide use and water pollution
• Provides temporal trend analysis• Facilitates TMDL development• Helps growers evaluate BMPs (Ag Waiver)• Highlights data gaps
WaterPIC Acknowledgments– Funders: USEPA Region 9, True North Foundation, San Francisco
Foundation– Tony Choi (Placer Data)– Stephen Orme – Brian Hill– USEPA, DPR, USGS, RWQCB: data source providers– Advisory Board
• U.S. EPA: John Ungvarsky, Debra Denton• Water Board: Bill Johnson• USGS: Kathy Kuivila• SFEI: Meg Sedlak• Public interest groups: Lara Cushing (CEH), Sejal Choksi
(WaterKeepers), Paola Ramos (LIF), Lena Brook (CWA)• Consultant: Kelly Moran, TDC Environmental
Next Steps
• Internationalization of the site
• User interface update
• Add urban uses to WaterPIC
• Add “organic approved” tag
