Employer Led Manufacturing Apprenticeships

• Small and Medium Sized Manufacturers (SMMs) are critical to the US economy

• The NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) program is the federal program dedicated to serving SMMs

• A skilled worker shortage is a critical barrier to growth for SMMs

• Employer led, Manufacturing Apprenticeship programs are the solution to developing the workforce needed to grow the use of robotics and technology in SMMs and create and retain jobs

Employer Led Apprenticeship: Industrial Manufacturing

Technician (IMT)

• Earn and Learn approach – all IMT apprentices are employees of a specific company, earning wages, benefits and seniority while they learn new skills

• 18 month program/3,000 hours of structured technical instruction – 2,736 hours of on-the-job training (OJT) from experienced mentors

– 264 hours of related technical instruction (Community College, Employer, Others)

• Stackable apprentice that can be the foundation for multiple career pathways – Can be used as 18 months into next higher skilled 4 year apprenticeship program

• Leads to industry-recognized credentials as well as college credits

• Benefits to Employers: proven training model, enhanced recruitment and retention of workers, emphasis on safety, creates a culture of continuous improvement

Conclusion • The IMT program is an entry level, low barrier to entry, registered apprenticeship

program to address the skilled worker shortage among SMMs

• Apprenticeship “group sponsors” can reduce the costs and improve the

effectiveness of registered apprenticeship programs

• The IMT program provides a common platform for longer term, advanced skilled

apprenticeship programs, such as Industrial Maintenance and Robotics

• Career awareness and workplace learning at the middle school and high school

level is critical to building a manufacturing workforce

• Job seekers may not be aware of the opportunities available to them in

manufacturing

• The MEP National Network and its sub-recipients are critical partners in

communities that want to grow their manufacturing sector
