HistoryWhen the Panama Canal was completed in 1914, it divided the country of Panama as well as North and South America except for a small service bridge at the Gatun Locks. In 1942, a small service swing bridge was built at the Miraflores Locks. Both of these bridges were quite small and can only be used when the locks gates are closed. Therefore as traffic increased, the small service bridges and ferries could not handle the volume of traffic. Finally in 1959, the United States started construction on the Bridge of the Americas and completed the bridge in 1962.The United States built the Bridge of the Americas at a cost of about $20 million dollars. The bridge was a part of the Pan-American Highway until the Centennial Bridge was constructed in 2004, at which point the Pan-American Highway was redirected.

The Amador Causeway is a road way and walking path that stretches from the mainland to four small islands in the Panama Bay (Naos Island, Culebra Island, Perico Island and Flamenco Island). It was constructed from rock that was removed from the construction of the Panama Canal. The Amador Causeway overlooks the entrance to the Panama Canal, so you can watch as ships enter the Panama Canal and go under the Bridge of the Americas.

The Amador Causeway is a great place to take a bike ride or walk and see a lot of the sites including the Panama City skyline, Panama Canal, Bridge of the Americas, Balboa Yacht Club and Panama Bay. There are also a lot of bars and restaurants as well as the Marine Exhibition Center (Centro de Exhibitions Marinas) run by Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.Flamenco IslandThe Fuerte Amador Resort and Marina is located on Flamenco Island and includes a two-story shopping center, marina, restaurants and bars.

The original city of Panama was established in 1519 by the Spanish and was the first city founded by the Spanish on the Pacific Coast. The city was attacked and destroyed in 1671 by an English pirate named Henry Morgan. The ruins of the city are now referred to as Panama Viejo (Old Panama) and are along the eastern fringes of the current Panama City.Bell TowerThe Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion Cathedral was built between 1519 and 1626 and the bell tower has been restored in recent years.

Just a short flight from Panama City gets you into the Bocas Del Toro region. Bocas Del Toro is a cluster of small islands, just off Panama’s Caribbean coast, which offers some of the richest natural, historical, and cultural diversity in the country. The islands’ are comprised of thick rainforests, winding mangroves, pristine white-sand beaches, and vibrant coral reefs. This complex ecosystem makes Bocas home to some of the regions rarest species including the Leatherback Turtle and West Indian Manatee along with many indigenous plants and animals.

The islands of Bocas are also host to a fantastic mix of surf

in a relatively small zone. Short trips via panga boats allow surfers to experience the many reefbreaks and

beachbreaks which surround the islands. The best surf

months are from December through early April and again in June through July when the

cyclones moving north through the Atlantic send pumping swells west the

archipelago.
