THIS PENINSULA An Eden Like No OtherBEING THERE IS THE BEST REWARD
And the 75,000 people who do busi-
ness a nd reside here are testimony to the
enviable attractions of the Palos Verdes
Peninsula, which reaches into the Pacific
at the southern tip of Los Angeles County.
They inhabit four distinct and appealing
cities, Palos Verdes Estates, Rolling Hills,
Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos
Verdes, plus two unincorporated areas,
Academy Hill and Westfield.
This unique slice of paradise is unlike
any other on the California coastline.
Steeped in history and blessed with an
unbelievably favorable climate, all four
cities invite newcomers to experience an
unparalleled quality of life. Following a
general plan that incorporates balanced
living, residential and commercial areas
are artfully laid out to accommodate a
mix of attractive and functional live-work
enclaves. Its managed growth and a
superior infrastructure ensure safety and
exemplary services.
Westerly breezes keep the climate on
the Peninsula moderate, with summer tem-
peratures barely above 80 degrees and an
average winter temperature of 67 degrees.
Since rainfall occurs only in the colder
months, residents and visitors are offered
the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of
outdoor activities throughout the year.
Bordered on the west and south by the
Pacific Ocean, the Peninsula has unlimited
aquatic activities. Swimming, sunning on
the beach or by a pool, diving, surfing,
yachting, sailing or sport fishing beckon
the most relaxed visitor or the most avid
sports enthusiast.
9www.PalosVerdesChamber.com
Land lovers can enjoy the trails for
equestrians, bicyclists or joggers that criss-
cross the Peninsula (there are more than
60 miles of horse trails alone). Golfers can
play on private or public courses, and ten-
nis fans can lob their balls over nets at any
one of the public courts or membership
clubs. Organized leagues for team sports
are also available.
Parks on the Peninsula lend themselves
to picnics, relaxing in the sun or shade, kite
flying or Frisbee throwing. The eight devel-
oped parks also offer programs for groups,
seniors and children. Parks ranging in size
from 4.5 acres to 140 acres are scattered
throughout each city.
Recreation, golf, equestrian activities,
community events, the arts and theater,
plus outstanding restaurants, service-ori-
ented and friendly businesses, and
convenient shopping are hallmarks of these communities.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce encourages community awareness of our many not-for-profit Chamber members and fosters part-nerships with local businesses.
CITY PROFILES
PALOS VERDES ESTATES The City has long been regarded as a garden suburb with a strong commitment to protect its unique character. Incorpo-rated in 1939, Palos Verdes Estates is the Peninsula’s oldest residential community and has a population of approximately 14,000 residents. Movie and television producers often use Malaga Cove Plaza, the oldest and most picturesque shopping area on the Peninsula, as a filming site. Unique communities within PVE are Luna-da Bay, Valmonte and Montemalaga. Twenty-eight percent of the city’s 3,038 acres is permanently protected as parkland and maintained to preserve the community’s natural beauty. The Palos Verdes Homes Association interprets and enforces protective restrictions on building sites, both in Palos Verdes Estates and in the Miraleste section of Rancho Palos Verdes.
ROLLING HILLS Incorporated in 1957, Rolling Hills is a residential city with a population of approximately 2,000. Three gated entranc-es provide access to the private roads that cross the hills and canyons within. Covering three square miles, Rolling Hills is subdivided into 650 parcels of one, two, or more acres per parcel. There are no zones for commerce.
ROLLING HILLS ESTATES Incorporated in 1957 to preserve its unique rural-residential atmosphere and equestrian lifestyle, the City of Rolling Hills Estates encompasses 4.18 square miles of hilly terrain on the northern side
of the Peninsula, has more than 25 miles of scenic trails, 36 acres of open space, and operates six parks. Rolling Hills Estates offers its residents a temperate climate cooled by westerly sea breezes, creating idyllic weather conditions. With a population of approximately 8,000, Rolling Hills Estates has its own tennis club and equestrian center and provides a variety of seasonal recreational and instructional classes and activities for everyone. In addition to the many public services offered, the City also hosts a number of special community events, such as the annual City Celebration, The Hills Are Alive Race, the Tracy Austin Doubles Tennis Tournament, and the Peninsula Holiday Parade. It is considered the center of com-merce on the Peninsula, and is often referred to as the “Heart of the Hill.” It boasts a mile-long shopping area that includes impressive open-air shopping plazas, such as Peninsula Shopping Center and Promenade on the Peninsula.
RANCHO PALOS VERDES The City almost circles the Peninsula and shares borders with each of the other cities. It is the largest Peninsula municipal-ity in terms of size with 13.6 square miles and in terms of population with 41,000 residents. Incorporated in 1973, it is the Peninsula’s youngest city. The city’s name was adapted from the original Sepulveda claim, Rancho de los Palos Verdes. Convenience stores, professional ser-vices, and restaurants with ocean views are located in the Golden Cove Center at the end of Hawthorne Boulevard at Palos Verdes Drive South. More stores and a movie theater are located on the eastern border of the city along Western Avenue.
On Palos Verdes Drive South are two well-known destination locations, each with spectacular coastline views. Rancho Palos Verdes is the home of Trump Nation-al Golf Club, with its 18-hole premiere golf course, restaurants, pro shop and banquet facilities, located at Palos Verdes Drive South and Trump National Drive. A few miles down the road is the five-star Ter-ranea Resort, with its ocean-view guest rooms, convention and banquet facilities, restaurants, spa, 9-hole “The Links” golf course, located at Palos Verdes Drive South and Terranea Way. Both of these popular destinations have free public parking, bluff top walking trails, and shoreline access. The City’s 7.5 miles of coastline fea-ture striking topography, with quiet coves and beaches protected by steep cliffs. Rancho Palos Verdes is also home to the 1,900-acre Palos Verdes Nature Preserve with great hillside and ocean views and trails for casual walking, hiking, horse-back riding, and segments for mountain bicycles. Other well known landmarks include the Point Vicente Interpretive Center, Wayfarers Chapel, the Abalone Cove tide pools, Marymount California University, and the picturesque Point Vicente Coast Guard Lighthouse.
ACADEMY HILL AND WESTFIELD These two unincorporated “islands” are located off Palos Verdes Drive North on the northern side of the Peninsula. Both are governed by the County of Los Angeles. Westfield, the more populated of the two, has nearly 300 homes in a rural environment that is protected for eques-trian interests. Academy Hill has fewer than 200 homes. It is home to Chadwick School, the Peninsula’s oldest private school, which was founded by Margaret Chadwick in 1935.

PENINSULA HISTORY
Rich in Native American, Spanish, Portuguese and Mexican
heritage, the Palos Verdes Peninsula has a long rich history.
The first known inhabitants were the Tongva Indians, whose
main village was located where Machado Lake (in Ken Malloy
Harbor Regional Park) is located today. Artifacts of Native Amer-
ican life have been found at several archaeological sites on the
Peninsula, most notably at Malaga and Abalone Coves.
DIG INTO OUR PAST
The Peninsula was noticed by explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542 during his historic coastal voyage. Seeking safe anchorage for his fleet of bulky galleons, Cabrillo rounded the headlands and dis-covered “The Bay of Smokes,” a mud flat protected from storms by the island of Catalina. Sixty years later, the explorer Sebastian Vizcaino used the same protect-ed bay for repairs and to restock his ship’s larders. The name Palos Verdes, which in Spanish means “green sticks,” was first used to describe the Peninsula in 1827, when the Governor of Mexican California granted the land to Juan José Dominguez
as a reward for his military service. The original boundary lines were casual to say the least – a bull’s skull, a river bend and a gnarled tree were landmarks used to designate the territory. In the early 1800s, members of the Sepulveda family were granted the right to raise cattle on the portion of the land grant known as Rancho de los Palos Verdes. Covered with 75,000 acres of native vegetation and with abundant water from artesian springs, the Peninsula supported approximately 2,500 head of cattle and the festive life of the ranchero flourished on the headlands. The sheltered coves and harbors of the Pen-insula were frequently used by the “hide
ships” of the 19th century and it was here, in Portuguese Bend, that Richard Henry Dana tossed hides from the cliffs to wait-ing boats below, as detailed in his famous book, Two Years Before the Mast. Unfortu-nately, a severe drought that lasted from 1862 to 1864 decimated the cattle herds. A series of mortgage foreclosures, delin-quent taxes and boundary litigation shifted control of the rancho from the Sepulveda family to a number of mortgage holders. In 1882, the years of complex litigations finally come to an end and much of the great rancho was purchased by Jotham Bixby. As metropolitan Los Angeles grew, so did land values on the Peninsula, mak-ing it financially unfeasible to graze cattle. Some parts of the Peninsula were leased to Japanese farmers who grew out-of-season vegetables as well as barley and garbanzo beans. In 1913, most of the Bixby land was purchased by a group of New York inves-tors who envisioned building a planned community of large estates for the wealthy. One of the investors was Frank Vanderlip, president of National City Bank of New York. He worked with the sons of Frederick
13www.PalosVerdesChamber.com
Law Olmsted and a planner named Henry Cheney to create one of the first planned communities in the country. They built the Palos Verdes Golf Club, La Venta Inn (as their real estate office), a beach club and the first school. A bond for the school received a unanimous yes vote in 1925. Dozens of homes were built in the areas that are now Palos Verdes Estates and the Miraleste section of Rancho Palos Verdes. Vanderlip planned to build a home in Portuguese Bend similar in scale to the Hearst mansion. The Depression put an
end to those plans. In 1939, the residents incorporated a portion of the Peninsula as the city of Palos Verdes Estates. The small gated community of Rolling Hills and the equestrian-inspired city of Rolling Hills Estates became cities in 1957, followed by the city of Rancho Palos Verdes in 1973. Each city has its own charac-ter and history and together they make up this splendid Peninsula we call home.

PLACES TO VISITMalaga Cove Plaza – This Spanish Renais-sance style plaza dedicated in 1925 was the Peninsula’s first commercial area. You will still find shops, offices, a food market, flower stand and a small restaurant there. The centerpiece of the plaza is the Nep-tune Fountain, which is a two-thirds size replica of a fountain in Bologna, Italy. The fountain was a gift to the Palos Verdes community and dedicated in 1930. This is a good starting point to begin a drive around the Peninsula.
Farnham Martin’s Park and Malaga Cove Library – Directly behind the Plaza and up Via Corta stands a lovely stone wall and fountain, with steps on either side leading up to a lawn, library and art gallery that opened in 1930. Several original pieces of art and furniture are still on display. During the summer, free concerts are offered on the lawn. And there you can see the fabled peacocks that also dwell elsewhere on the Peninsula.
Palos Verdes Performing Arts – Established in 1983, the state-of-the art Norris theater offers 450 seats with outstanding visibility. It offers a variety of high qual-ity productions throughout the year. The Harlyne J. Services are conducted every Sunday at 11 a.m. as well as Easter and Christmas. It is open daily for prayers and meditation. Way-farers Chapel, often referred to as the Glass Church, is a famous and popular place for weddings. Many soap opera, television and movie weddings have been filmed there. Admission to the chapel and grounds is free. 5755 Palos Verdes Drive South, Rancho Palos Verdes, 310-377-1650

The whales pass by the Center’s cliff-side perch from December through April each year. The Center features exhibits on the natural and cultural history of the Pen-insula, with emphasis on the migration of the whale. Facilities with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and Pt. Vicen-te Lighthouse are available for meetings and special occasions. Several acres of parkland around the Center contain easy trails and picnic tables. Admiral Risty Restaurant On Oct. 10, 1966, Ralph M. Wood Jr. realized a dream when he opened The Admiral Risty Restaurant, one of the first dinner houses on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Over the years, the restaurant has undergone many changes to the menu, the interior and exte-rior, but the quality of food, unsurpassed service, romantic ambience and beautiful ocean view have remained steadfast. Fol-lowing Wood’s passing in January 2015, co-owner Wayne Judah and his wife, Jan, purchased the Woods’ interest in the restaurant. Looking ahead to The Risty’s historic 50th Anniversary in 2016, plans are underway for a 50-week celebration as warranted by this extraordinary achieve-ment in the hospitality industry.

Anytime,” New York Food Company is a full service catering company that produces hundreds of weddings and special events each year, manages exclusive ocean view venues, and provides corporate catering to some of the most discerning clients in Southern California. No request is too big and no detail too small is the underlying philosophy that keeps NYFC thriving and successful. A variety of divisions brings a high degree of experience, knowledge and creativity to everything NYFC does – from deliver-ing gourmet cuisine to a boardroom or designing the perfect wedding, to pro-ducing a multi-course meal in a remote location. Its newest venture, Chefs With Altitude (CWA), is a private and charter jet in-flight catering division with 35 chefs.
