annual visitors as well as locals who frequent his performances. Many of the adults he sees today started coming as kids and are now back with their own brood. “I love the kids,” said Tanner. “I have a sincere appre­ciation for what they represent on this planet. If you can come out here and watch these children and not be inspired, then you are just walking around dead.”

In addition to his Tuesday night show, Tanner entertains nightly, Monday­Friday, with two one­hour shows, starting at 6:30 and 8 p.m.

Additional live entertainment takes place nightly at several of the waterfront restaurants, including San Miguel’s, Scott’s Fish Market and Kingfisher. (See our calendar of events, p. 29, for more information. Check individual restaurants for their entertainment schedules.)

Apply pressureThere are different ways to

put pressure on your opponent such as coming to the net to give him less time to make the return shot, being in better shape so you can sustain longer points and forcing him to play to your strengths. Develop a sense for when your opponent is in trouble or tired. Look for signs such as leaning way back on the back foot or being pulled off the court. By doing so, you can create the pressure and situation to force opponent errors.

Attack a weaknessDiscovering and exploiting your

opponent’s weakness(s) is a smart strat­egy. During the warm up, analyze what he does well and what shots seem shaky. If you have played this opponent before, you should have written down everything about the last match so you have a record. If the opponent has a weak backhand, keep pressuring that stroke; don’t give him any breathing room. If your opponent is slow of foot, move him from side to side.

There are many ways to beat an opponent at tennis, and it’s not always about having the most powerful forehand, the fastest serve or the meanest slice. While learning proper mechanics and perfecting a variety of strokes can go a long way toward success on the tennis court, here’s a brief overview of habits that can increase your chances of winning:

Make consistency countFor the vast majority of tennis

players, consistency is the best way to win. At most levels, you win because your opponent makes an error, not because you hit a winner. If you can hit the ball back three or four times, you will probably win the point. The higher your shot tolerance or number of balls you are willing to hit before getting tired or losing patience, the more likely your opponent will miss. Tennis is a game of mistakes, so give your opponent another chance to make one.

Concentrate on placementDeliberate and accurate placement

of your shots is helpful not only in challeng­ing your opponent, but allowing you to recover to the proper area of the court and anticipate the next shot. At the same time,

Most golfers fail to optimize distance and accuracy because their club takes the wrong route to the ball—specifically, outside-in instead of inside-out. Twisting your torso away from the ball only to rotate back toward it isn’t necessarily an intui-tive move for your muscles. Consequently, when most golfers get near the top of their backswing, their brain insists to them that they’re getting too far away from the ball, so they make the fatal adjustment of keeping the club close—meaning outside the target line—immediately serving to both weaken and misdirect the swing.

A proper golf swing takes an inside path toward the target line. You may have heard this 100 times and still find it hard to convince yourself to put it into practice. But execute it you must if you want to max out both length and accuracy, regardless of the type of shot you’re facing.

When you swing correctly, your club comes inside, goes up behind your shoul-ders, then, as you swing down, comes from that same inside path toward the ball, mov-ing down the line, through the impact zone, and curving back up and around behind your back again. In other words, the golf swing

doesn’t feel muscularly intuitive because it makes a circle, the clubhead opening and then closing for most of its duration, not on the target line. Hence the panic experienced by your brain and the ill-considered signals it sends you in response.

Here’s a simple drill to help you solidify the instinct for an inside-path swing. Place a 2-by-4 on its side an inch or two outside your ball, parallel to the target line. There are two parts of the swing that will avoid the 2-by-4 if you’re swinging along the cor-rect path and that will hit it if you’re not:

it swing back down. The clubhead will naturally swing open toward the ball, come through it and then close again. This is what we mean when we talk about the club releasing. When you let the club release, you allow it to follow its natural physical motion, and the result is greater length and accuracy. When the club doesn’t release, it’s because you’ve tried to guide the clubface straight through the impact zone and then tried to keep it straight, compromising both distance and accuracy.

Think of a tennis player bringing the racket back. Is it pointing at the target? No. The player starts the racket back away from the target, then, after impact, lets it release or continue through the zone to again point away from the target. Golf requires application of the same concept. When you let the club release, you’re letting its natural power be unleashed.

Catch More Fish—Chum 'em Up

can-eat free buffet (the live bait chum you are throwing in the water), these fish can be aroused and enticed to the surface where lighter line and bait can be very effective. I can’t wait to experience this with you on a summertime trip in the Palmetto Dunes canal!

Not only is the canal fishing red hot, the Intracoastal fishing is on fire, too. Shark fishing is one of the most exiting trips we have to offer for kids or adults, and June, July and August have to be the best three months of the year for this type of fishing. The heat is on, and the summer bite is just as hot. This spring was one of the best on record here in Palmetto Dunes Resort. (For some reason, when we have cold winters, it just seems to make the fish hungry.) With spring bite being so good, I am really looking forward to this summer and the memories that will be etched into my mind forever.

With the bait population exploding like I have never seen before, the amount of baby fry in the lagoon this spring points to an exciting summer. Fry refers to baby fish like mullet, menhaden, spot and pinfish when they are very small—too small for the big fish to eat yet.

By the beginning of summer this small fry will be big enough (at least two to three inches long) to whet the appetites of the most feisty fish. When the baits get this big, I like to live bait chum for the red and trout in the resort.

Live bait chumming is a very exciting technique to use in summertime fishing. The key is having enough bait in the live well to throw it back in the water for the fish to feed on; but you have to know where the fish are for it to work.

During the hot days of summer, the fish are feeding early in the morning and late in the evening. During the middle of the day, these fish lie up in the tree line or hang out in deep water to get away from the heat of the sun. By offering an all-you-

“One day we caught Bob fourteen times,” recalled Buchman. “He figured it out: You chew on some chicken, they bring you up to the surface where you show off a bit, then they put you back over the side and you move on to the next one.”

Lest you think the trip is all about blood-lust, be aware that it’s a catch-and-release operation, and there’s more to the tour than just fishing. Captain George is happy to answer questions about the local ecosystem, and often he simply volunteers information; he may point out a snowy egret, talk about the history of the oyster industry or relate stories of the dolphin births he’s witnessed.

“There’s a lot more out here than just crabs,” said Buchman. “There’s a lot of bird activity, a lot of fish activity, and nature in general. We go up into the estu-aries where it’s rather quiet, and it’s nice to get away from the honking horns and the McDonalds. Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee that you’ll catch a crab; but we can guarantee that you’ll have a good time. If not, we just throw you overboard.”

“Sometimes people have never even seen a crab before,” said Thomas Gadson, who skippers the Crabber J and has been with Adventure Cruises for 18 years. “They say, ‘Whoa, that’s how a crab looks?’ Kids always want to know if they can take one home for a pet…not a good idea.” And here Gadson is speaking from experience—he’s been pinched dozens of times.

But the real competition begins when the figures are entered onto a scoreboard: Each crab caught is worth a point, plus extra points for occurrences such as a double-play (two crabs together on the line, possibly because they’re mating) or the catching of any crab that the Crabber J crew has named. (Bob, Bill and Al are marked with magic marker on the backs of their shells.)

One fair spring day, a group of hearty souls embarked on a thrilling voyage of adventure, fraught with action and peril. Well, perhaps we’re exaggerating a little, but the handful of vacationers who went out on the island’s only charter crabbing boat sure had an exciting time.

As the Crabber J II eased out of Shelter Cove Harbour toward the shining waters of an undisclosed creek (secret crabbing locations must not be revealed), Captain George Buchman began his tongue-in-cheek routine. “Folks, get ready for severe weather,” he warned. “Seventy-eight degrees, winds at two knots, and waves cresting at an incredible height of…two inches. In other words, it’s Hilton Head’s version of Deadliest Catch.”

When the boat arrived at its destination, eager crabbers were briefed on how to man their equipment, which consisted of reels attached to very short rods stuck out over the side of the boat. Each line was baited with a raw, rubbery chicken neck (“super-secret bait,” according to Captain George), which is a preferred food of the local blue crab. The sport consisted of letting these weighted necks drop straight down to the bottom, conversing with your neighbor for a minute or two, then slowly reeling them back up. If there happened to be a crab attached, you scooped him up with a dip net, and this never failed to cause excitement.

Hilton Head has long been known as a premier destination for all things related to love. “Many of our clients have been vacationing down here since they were children,” said Nicole Guy, catering and events manager for Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, which boasts several popular wedding venues. “They have good memories here, and they want to create memories of their own—carry on that tradition. Not only that, but if you look up and down the coast, from Myrtle Beach to North Florida, Hilton Head Island is by far the most beautiful. This provides what Guy calls “more of a live oak and scenic golf course feel”; Receptions can then be held in the clubhouse. Smaller, more intimate weddings can be held in one of the ocean- or lagoon-front private homes, which carry the built-in bonus of providing accommodations for members of the wedding party. Another facility is the Centre Court

Conference Center, a large covered dining pavilion adjacent to a gorgeous swimming pool.

“It’s really a flexible space,” said Guy. “For some weddings, we’ve done cocktails and hors d’oeuvres around the pool, dinner in the dining pavilion and dancing and entertainment in the interior space. It’s walking distance to the beach, so the actual cere-mony can be on the beach or on the pavilion deck.”

natural theme at her ceremony; the beach wedding was all that she’d hoped and dreamed.

“It was a beautiful day,” said Johnson. “We had the wedding right on the beach, then we just walked up the steps to the Dunes House for the reception. It was very convenient and very romantic.”

Johnson’s experience working with the event planners was also quite positive. “Everybody was so helpful,” she said. “Things went so smoothly that I didn’t have to be a ‘bridezilla’ like you see on TV. Nicole and I went over the menu probably 15 different times, and each time we made a change; but I never felt like I was being a burden. Even as I was going back and forth, she was very responsive and made me feel comfortable about it.”

When the wedding was over, Johnson looked back and realized that the experience had been completely free from the stereotypical “catastrophes” that plague many weddings. “Honestly, it was perfect,” she said. “I didn’t have any problems. Our guests also said that it was seamless. And the food was just amazing; I think it was the asiago-stuffed new potatoes that everyone was going crazy over.”

Johnson was also impressed that the event planners came to the ceremony dressed in her colors. “It was like they were part of it,” she said.

Not a day goes by that I don’t pinch myself to see if I’m still here or if I have died and gone to heaven. That’s because living on Hilton Head Island is as close as it gets to paradise on earth.

So, when it came time for a recent Palmetto Previews pow-wow (our seasonal planning meeting), I had a sudden epiphany: Why meet in a stuffy old office building when we could just as easily have our discussion at the beach? There aren’t any “hidden” costs to speak of. Buyers interested in renting should strongly consider establishing a relationship with one of the local rental companies or the resort itself. Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort has an extensive property management division and is not only located at the entrance to the resort, but owns and operates the amenities, (golf, tennis, etc.), which makes it easy for guests and owners to plan their visits. All of these companies will charge commissions and fees for their services. Your other expenses are the same as homeownership, except you may have a regime fee if your property happens to be a villa.

Prices are significantly lower than just a few years ago. Buyers today are getting a bargain considering our previously historically high appreciation. Interest rates are still historically low but going up steadily. As the rates go up, so do the monthly payments on the principal balance. Presently, the buyer’s dollars go fur-ther than they will in the near future. In other words, buyers get more house now for the monthly payment required.

Another good reason to buy now is selection. Not long ago there were far fewer properties for sale. Some areas in the local resorts didn’t have any property for sale. This was especially true in the villa market. Today, buyers have choice.

warranties for both buyers and sellers. The policy covers the seller during the listing period and covers the buyer for one year after closing on their new property. While the policy has some limitations, most of the items that usually fail in a home are covered. There is a small deductible, but essentially the insurance company arranges for the repairs to be com-pleted in a timely manner and pays for same. Home warranties are good for both sellers and buyers as they offer our clients peace of mind regarding the condition of their properties.

There hasn’t been a better time in the last few years to consider purchasing. Today, prices represent an incredible value; we have more inventory to choose from, and accessibility is easily obtainable. Also, as interest rates continue to rise, the cost of ownership will only increase.

First off, buyers need to work with an exper-ienced and knowledgeable Realtor. This way they can save time and learn quickly what their options may be. The next issue is price. Many of our communities could be outside their reach. However, there is something for everyone in the Lowcountry. The key is to find the right Realtor and simply get started. The process is really much simpler than it seems.

The biggest issues seem to result from home inspections. Most buyers don’t under-stand that in South Carolina, you buy property “as is” unless it’s otherwise stipulated. The exception is that the heating, air conditioning, electrical and plumbing systems, fireplace and appliances must be in good working order and the roof free of leaks.

The purpose of a home inspection is to confirm that the property is what the seller has represented it to be. Visible defects such as cracked floor tiles, scratched kitchen counter-tops or fogged windows should be noted and considered prior to making an offer. Once a contract is signed, the seller is not responsible to repair this type of defect.

What­are­the­most­common­mis­takes­ sellers­ make­ when­ listing­

their­property?Overpricing is the worst mistake. Property

normally sells at fair market value, which is the price that buyers are willing to pay. Pricing property at a realistic price, or at fair market value, will bring an early sale, fewer inconveniences and a greater monetary return for the seller. Today’s savvy buyers have easy access to market comparables and learn from them. If a seller’s property doesn’t compare in price to others that are similar, buyers won’t even want to see it.

Other critical mistakes sellers make are not preparing their property to show well and making it difficult for Realtors to access their property.

Sellers­ want­ to­ generate­ as­much­ local­ exposure­ for­ their­

property­as­possible.­How­do­they­achieve­this­goal?

Sellers should list with a Realtor and real estate company who have an active, ongoing marketing program already in place for their clients. They can research local media vehicles such as newspapers, magazines and television to see which Realtors or companies have a substantial, well-recognized presence in the market.

homes increase in value. For example, if you had a five-month inventory of homes, prices would probably increase two-three percent per year. According to Baldwin, in late 2004 and the first six months of 2005, Palmetto Dunes had a one-month inventory. “We know from that experience if you have a one-month supply of homes, values go up about 25 percent per year,” he said.

Unfortunately, the reverse is true for excess inventory. The higher the inventory is over six months, the more homes go down in value. If you had a seven- or eight-month inventory, homes would likely go down only two-three percent per year. But if you have a 20-month inventory, prices would decrease somewhere around 20-25 percent per year.

Considering the number of active listings, according to Baldwin, we currently have about an eight-month supply of inventory—down dramatically from previous levels of 25 months. “You need six months or less of inventory for prices to stabilize. So we’re getting real close,” he said.

A bright future aheadWhile no one has a crystal ball, when

it comes to predicting the future value of real estate, a few fundamentals apply. One of the most obvious is that people will always be drawn to Hilton Head Island. The beach, golf courses, tennis courts, marinas and other desirable elements, including temperate weather, moss draped oaks, lush foliage, abundant wildlife, spectacular sun-rises and moonbeams over the Atlantic attract millions of visitors each year.

and conveniences of a resort lifestyle in a small town environment. For those who choose to live, work, retire and/or vacation here, the ongoing value is unquestionable,” said Baldwin.

Whether the real estate market on Hilton Head Island has reached the very bottom or not remains to be seen. What is a firm reality, however, is that there are bargains to be found. The significant number of valuable properties available at a discount from their previous price is a unique opportunity for those looking to buy a piece of paradise. “Waiting even a few months may mean an opportunity missed,” said Baldwin. “If you are in a position to buy and you have a long-term view, now is the time.”

Lowman Chairs Heart EventOn February 21, DMG Realtor,

Debbie Lowman participated in and chaired the Belfair Women’s Golf Asso­ciation’s “Play Fore Your Heart” golf tournament which raised just over $18,250 for the American Heart Asso­ciation. The tournament was attended by 140 players followed by a dinner with 170 participants. “It was such a success that I had Belfair members giving me donations for the American Heart Association for two weeks following the tournament,” said Debbie.

Special Children Bring Talents and Blessings to the Golf Course

DMG Realtor, Trish Weaver, along with her husband, Doug, who is director of golf at Palmetto Dunes, believe that their work should count for more than just a way to make a living. Last summer, Doug had the opportunity to work with a few special education students from the HHI Middle School in his junior golf program. “I have been told that golf has really changed these students’ self image and social skills,” said Trish, describing the personal blessing both she and Doug have received.

Kayanna Simmons, age 12, placed second at the South Carolina Special Olympics tournament in October, 2009. The big news is that Christopher McPherson, also age 12, won the South Carolina Special Olympic golf tournament and will go on to Lincoln, Nebraska this July to represent SC and Hilton Head Island in the national event. Warnock Rides for MSLast October, DMG Controller, Linda

Warnock, joined over 1,000 cyclists in Greenville, SC, representing the Mid­ Atlantic Chapter of the National Mul­tiple Sclerosis Society in its annual Bike MS fundraising event. Riding a total of 80 miles and raising nearly $2,000, Warnock ranked as a “Top 100” fundraiser. The group as a whole raised $725,000.

This was Warnock’s fifth ride for MS, her first with the local chapter. She is currently training for the 2010 event to be held September 25&26, 2010. Won’t you join her or sponsor her ride?

Champions in the MakingThe 32nd Annual Week of Champions

takes place June 14­18. Week of Champions is a nonprofit volunteer organization that provides sports camps for children ages eight and up free of charge. The camps are conducted by professional Christian athletes with the theme of teaching participants to be champions in life.

DMG Realtor, Steve Plowden, in his 17th year with the Week of Champions, is appealing to area property owners to donate the use of their homes or villas to accommodate the athletes and their families. Owners receive $500 for their expenses and can write off the total cost of the week as a charitable donation.

Team DMG Takes a Walk for Heart HealthOn Saturday, April 10, six DMG associates teamed up for a 3.2 mile walk around the

Bluffton Promenade to help raise money for the American Heart Association. According to Linda Warnock, who organized the team (complete with matching T­shirts), the group was inspired to act after one of their agents had a stroke and subsequently passed away.

The American Heart Association is the largest voluntary health organization working to prevent, treat and defeat heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. The 2010 Start! Low Country Heart Walk raised over $139,000.

James T. (Jim) Griner, III joined Pal-metto Dunes as Chief of Security effec-tive January 15, 2010. He is a native of Savannah, Georgia and a graduate of Armstrong Atlantic State University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He holds a master’s degree in public administration from Columbus State University. He is also a graduate of the Georgia Law Enforce-ment Command College and is a law en-forcement instructor with specializations in firearms and defensive tactics.

Griner began his law enforcement career in Georgia in 1993. He has completed assignments with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team (CNT). He also has working and supervisory experience in patrol, traffic enforcement and K-9. Additionally, he has served as a law enforcement accreditation man-ager and an accreditation assessor for the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).

Griner comes to Palmetto Dunes from the Garden City Police force where he served as watch commander, a position which gave him skill development that translates directly into his leadership position here. He acknowledges that his daily contact

with people helped him to develop a great appreciation for community relations and everyone’s involvement in safety and crime prevention. He uses the term “community policing” to emphasize that we all need to work together and cooperate.

Attracted by the reputation of the Palmetto Dunes security department, Griner says he welcomes the opportunity to work in a resort that is part of one of the greatest places in the country. He respects the effort that has gone before him but looks forward to continuing to enhance our capabilities, performance, and reputation.

Griner is married and has a 10-year-old daughter. His hobbies include music, sports, drag racing and working out.

Hilton Head Island is one of the best-loved destinations in the world for boaters, beach-goers and people who love the water. Whether you sailed halfway around the world to get here or you’re a full-time resident who simply loves to bask in the relaxed ambience of the waterfront, Shelter Cove Marina is sure to provide a world-class experience. A unique offering at Shelter Cove Marina is an excursion aboard the Crabber J II, captained by the only person in the world who charters sport crabbing trips.

For those who would rather observe marine life, there are dolphin cruises, sunset sails and dinner trips aboard vessels like the 40-foot sailing yacht Special K and the 62-foot Schooner Welcome, a historic replica of a 1795 USCG Revenue Cutter. Nature tours provided by Skimmer charters, Adventure Cruises, or Outside Hilton Head give visitors a chance to see dolphins, otters, oyster beds and an amazing variety of bird life. There are also boat rentals, including pontoon boats and kayaks, available through Outside Hilton Head. For those interested in local history, trips to nearby Daufuskie Island can also be arranged.

The marina has 175 wet slips and can accommodate boats up to 150 feet long. The Ship’s Store, located just up from the docks, has expanded its operations

to include convenience store items for boaters and guests. In addition to high-quality apparel, Sperry Topsiders, men’s and women’s shoes and Costa Del Mar sunglasses, the marina now offers a range of snacks, beverages and limited grocery store items, from canned soups to candy bars. Wi-Fi access is available through Hargray. Open seven days a week, the Ship’s Store also offers rod rentals and a “biscuit bowl” for hungry pets, who are always welcome.

The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina is a non-profit performing arts organization. In addition to a 349-seat, main-stage theater that hosts an annual theater and performing arts series, the organization oversees two art galleries and a community arts educational program. The Arts Center received the 2006 Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Award for top arts organization in South Carolina.

The King’s ClockWhile you’re enjoying Shelter Cove Harbour,

don’t miss the statue of King Neptune, one of the area’s most photographed landmarks. Designed and installed by sculptor Wayne Edwards, this beloved statue serves as a tribute to Neptune, the Roman god of the sea.

The statue is strategically mounted on a circular base with numbers around the edge. When the trident’s shadow falls across the 26-foot wide base, the numbers indicate the precise time.

Hailed as the world’s largest figurative sundial, the statue was originally cast at a foundry in Princeton, New Jersey and shipped by truck to Hilton Head Island in 1983. Engineers made meticulous measurements before the one-ton statue was installed, ensuring that it would be located at the ideal angle to indicate the time. The sculpture was oriented towards true south by aligning the constellation Ursa Major with the North Star.

Attracting residents and visitors alike, the King Neptune statue delights generations of visitors to Shelter Cove Harbour, impressing adults and children of all ages.
