It has been an absolute joy to walk around the school and enjoy the enthusiasm and invigoration that is permeating all aspects of Dorset Primary School. From students re-engaging with friends that they have not seen over the holiday break to the energy felt within the student learning environment, 2016 is going to see Dorset Primary take a giant step forward with many new exciting concepts to be implemented. Over the past couple of months, Dorset Primary School has been undergoing the application and selection process to select a Principal who will drive Dorset forward with vision and direction. As you may be aware, Mr John Jacobs took extended leave early last year with Mrs Palma Coppa stepping into the Acting Principal’s role. As the position was Acting Principal, School Council was obligated to advertise the substantive Principal role early in the year. Over the past couple of weeks a selection panel, including myself, received applications and the interviews were conducted early this week. Last night the recommended applicant was presented to School Council for approval. The calibre of the applications was extremely high and the decision was exceedingly difficult as we needed to ensure that whoever filled the position was going to continue to drive and direct the school within the vision and values that exist at Dorset Primary. At the same time the person had to have the courage to take viable risks to keep Dorset Primary as a locally sought-after education provider. It is with great pleasure that I inform the school community that Mrs Palma Coppa has been appointed as the substantive School Principal at Dorset Primary. I know that Palma will do a phenomenal job in directing this school towards a new and exciting future and I, as School Council President, look forward to working closely alongside Palma as we move forward. CONGRATULATIONS

ON BECOMING

PRINCIPAL OF

DORSET PRIMARY SCHOOL

PALMA COPPA Welcome back to Dorset Primary School for 2016 for what is going to be a wonderful year.

It has been an absolute joy to walk around the school and enjoy the enthusiasm and invigoration

that is permeating all aspects of Dorset Primary School. From students re-engaging with friends

that they have not seen over the holiday break to the energy felt within the student learning

environment, 2016 is going to see Dorset Primary take a giant step forward with many new

exciting concepts to be implemented.

Over the past couple of months, Dorset Primary School has been undergoing the application and

selection process to select a Principal who will drive Dorset forward with vision and direction.

As you may be aware, Mr John Jacobs took extended leave early last year with Mrs Palma Coppa

stepping into the Acting Principal’s role. As the position was Acting Principal, School Council

was obligated to advertise the substantive Principal role early in the year. Over the past couple of

weeks a selection panel, including myself, received applications and the interviews were

conducted early this week. Last night the recommended applicant was presented to School

Council for approval.

The calibre of the applications was extremely high and the decision was exceedingly difficult as

we needed to ensure that whoever filled the position was going to continue to drive and direct the

school within the vision and values that exist at Dorset Primary. At the same time the person had

to have the courage to take viable risks to keep Dorset Primary as a locally sought-after education

provider.

It is with great pleasure that I inform the school community that Mrs Palma Coppa has been

appointed as the substantive School Principal at Dorset Primary. I know that Palma will do a

phenomenal job in directing this school towards a new and exciting future and I, as School

Council President, look forward to working closely alongside Palma as we move forward.

Chaplain’s Chat with Dave Researching Resilience

Norman Garmezy, a developmental psychologist and clinician

at the University of Minnesota, met thousands of children in his

four decades of research. But one boy in particular stuck with

him. He was nine years old, with an alcoholic mother and an

absent father. Each day, he would arrive at school with the exact

same sandwich: two slices of bread with nothing in between. At

home, there was no other food available, and no one to make

any. Even so, Garmezy would later recall, the boy wanted to

make sure that “no one would feel pity for him and no one

would know the ineptitude of his mother.” Each day, without

fail, he would walk in with a smile on his face and a “bread

sandwich” tucked into his bag.

The boy with the bread sandwich was part of a special group of

children. He belonged to a cohort of kids—the first of many—

whom Garmezy would go on to identify as succeeding, even

excelling, despite incredibly difficult circumstances. These were

the children who exhibited a trait Garmezy would later identify

as “resilience.” (He is widely credited with being the first to

study the concept in an experimental setting.)

Over many years, Garmezy would visit schools across the

country, focusing on those in economically depressed areas, and

follow a standard protocol. He would set up meetings with the

principal, along with a school social worker or nurse, and pose

the same question: Were there any children whose backgrounds

had initially raised red flags—kids who seemed likely to

become problem kids—who had instead become, surprisingly, a

source of pride? “What I was saying was, ‘Can you identify

stressed children who are making it here in your school?’ ”

Garmezy said, in a 1999 interview.

“There would be a long pause after my inquiry before the

answer came. If I had said, ‘Do you have kids in this school who

seem to be troubled?,’ there wouldn’t have been a moment’s

delay. But to be asked about children who were adaptive and

good citizens in the school and making it even though they had

come out of very disturbed backgrounds—that was a new sort of

inquiry. That’s the way we began.”

. . . - - - . . .

This is the beginning of a truly great article in the New Yorker

on resilience. If you are looking for a greater understanding of

resilience and how to build resilient kids, please read the entire

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Kitchen News

Last week was another great week of SAKG Kitchen sessions with our students preparing the pizza dough and toppings to make two

delicious pizza’s .

They have been using a large variety of produce from our garden including silver beet, warrigal greens, green beans, a number of

different herbs, zucchini and eggplant.

The pizzas were enjoyed by both students, teachers and our awesome parent and grandparent helpers. A majority of our students

enjoyed the salad also.

The class teachers and I would greatly appreciate more parent helpers for our grade 5 &6 classes to help sessions run more smoothly

and finish on time.

We appreciate all the assistance we have received from parents and grandparents so far this year – so thankyou everyone!

I am currently getting some ideas together to produce a Dorset Kitchen Garden Recipe Book.

If any of our parent community who have assisted in the kitchen this year or previous years, enjoyed what we have cooked

previously and think that recipe should be included in the cookbook, please feel free to submit your suggestions to me personally, or

leave your suggestions in my pigeon hole in the staff room.

Thankyou

Regards

Gregg Hansford

Communicating With Our Parent Community

Our school is using an App to send instant messages, newsletters and notices and we are encouraging all families to use it on their iPhone or SmartPhone.

The Tiqbiz app will help our school keep parents fully informed and up-to-date with news, events, newsletters and notices. It’s easy to use and also has the benefit of helping reduce our paper consumption by printing less.

The first step is to download tiqbiz to your phone, tablet, computer … or all of them.

Search for : tiqbiz

Remember to click “allow” notifications when asked. This will allow us to send you important alert notices. For technical information please see the school office for a flyer.
