These stations will be open all week for you to pray, reflect, and meditate on the life-changing event of the death and resurrection. We hope that this will be a great opportunity to slow down, retreat, and delve more deeply into the reality of what God has done for us through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. These stations are open Monday through Friday, 8:30-4:30 p.m. and available to all who would like to participate! If you have any questions, please contact either Jenni Thorn ([email protected]) or Christian Hesling ([email protected]).

Lantern Light Festival at the Memphis Agricultural CenterSaturday, April 1 • 4:30-9 p.m. Join us for a spectacular evening of dazzling lights, colors, shapes, and themes. A tradition that started over 2,000 years ago, the lantern festival is China’s most important celebration, marking the return of spring, with the lighting of Chinese lanterns being symbolic of illuminating the future and the reunion of family.
While many people picture lanterns being released into the night sky, these enormous lanterns stay firmly on the ground. Each Chinese lantern is custom-built by Chinese artisans and typically takes four weeks and a team of seven to complete. Some are over 30 feet high and others are up to 300 feet long.
This is going to be so cool! We can eat Chinese food, see the Chinese Acrobats and even purchase authentic souvenirs!

The Jackson Master Gardeners saw this show in St. Louis and loved it.
Christina Baker Kline is the author of the Orphan Train. This book is about Andrew Wyeth’s painting, Christina’s World and its subject in the painting. Andrew Wyeth was friends with Christina and even set up a studio to paint in her home. This tells of their friendship and her hardships on the Maine coast beginning in the late 1890s.
Come join us for the talk about the book and lunch. We are trying this new time to see if it fits everyone’s schedule a little better. Hope to see you there! Text Susan (267-7238) the day before bookclub so she can save you a seat.

Member Spotlight: Laurie Hortonby Bobbie Mays
Communications Director
Laurie’s momma taught her, “Whatever comes your way, you just make the best of it!”
Laurie Smith Issler Horton is the oldest of three siblings. Her parents, Troy and Virginia Smith were from Huntingdon, TN. At the age of four, the family moved to Memphis where she grew up. They joined the Longstreet Methodist Church and Rev. Paul Douglass was their pastor. Laurie married her high school sweetheart, Philip Issler. Together, they had a son, Philip, Jr. (P.J.). At the age of 40, her husband died following a very lengthy illness. It was during this time when Laurie’s faith became stronger.
Shortly after he passed away, Laurie became a hospice volunteer. Knowing how hospice had been so helpful to her and Philip as they journeyed through his illness, she wanted to be there for others helping them experience the comfort, love and care they had. Later, when she moved to Jackson, she continued serving as a hospice volunteer.
Laurie worked as an insurance adjuster for several years while living in Memphis. She would attend monthly insurance dinner meetings. About five years before Philip passed away, she struck up a conversation at one of those dinner meetings in Memphis with David Horton, an insurance adjuster from Jackson.
When David learned through a friend of the loss of her husband, he sent Laurie a letter expressing his sympathy to her and PJ, who had recently graduated college, offering them a quiet place in the country to be together. David made it clear that he would not be there, but to call him if interested and he would make the arrangements. Laurie did not take him up on the offer but she did say maybe they could have dinner sometime.
Laurie and David began dating with David commuting back and forth between Jackson and Memphis every Friday night and Saturday night so he could be back to teach the 6th grade Sunday School class at Jackson FUMC. Finally, after six months, Laurie popped the question…”we know we love each other, you’re doing all this driving on the weekends, why don’t we just get married!?”
The Hortons have been married twenty-two years. Laurie said, “I moved from city life to the country living with cows and tractors… I love it!” Through the registered Brangus cows they own and cattle sales they attended over the past eighteen years, they have met
wonderful people who’ve become lifelong friends.
A Bump in the RoadIn April, 2016 Laurie had her annual mammogram check-up, something she has faithfully done each year since age 50. She received a letter that indicated her mammogram was normal. Always following up with her gynecologist each year, she went for her regular checkup the next week with her doctor. While he knew what the report had said, when examining her, he detected something that didn’t seem right. An ultrasound was scheduled and shortly within 3-4 days, the doctor’s office called stating the results were suspicious. Laurie and David went ahead with their planned trip to visit their children and grandchildren, then returned knowing she was being faced with having a biopsy. Already expecting it was cancer which was confirmed through the biopsy, options were discussed and Laurie chose to have a bilateral mastectomy which was scheduled in July.
Chemo began in September and lasted through January 25, 2017. Prior to the surgery, it was believed that only radiation would be necessary, however the size of the tumor and risk factor for recurrence required chemotherapy and radiation. Radiation was to start after the last chemo treatment, however she caught the flu which delayed her first radiation treatment until the end of February. On April 3, she will celebrate having her last radiation!
A Wellspring of JoyThrough a year-long battle of cancer, Laurie has kept the faith, maintained her sense of humor, remembered her momma’s words from her childhood and continued her positive outlook. She says for her, the biggest part of the battle is keeping the good attitude. Each day, she has gotten up and dressed and put on her make-up, as she has learned, “If you make the effort, it will lift your spirits.” Reflecting many times on the passage from Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” has also carried her through this journey.
Laurie has journaled this past year, hoping that if she can help someone else who may be going through a similar ordeal, she’ll be
better prepared to do so. She says she may be reached by e-mail or phone, [email protected] or 731-431-0117. Just as friends, family, her church, Family Life Forum Sunday School and her faith in God have gotten her through the challenges she has faced in her life, in return she wants to be there for others. David wanted her to share, too, that his dad had breast cancer; that men can get it and for them to take time for self-exams.
David and Laurie both retired in 2016 although they still have their commercial cattle business. Looking ahead, they are anxious to spend more time with their family of three children, and eight grandchildren and taking a trip sometime to Hawaii or Costa Rica. A new focus these past few months has been planning and preparing the building on the property they own on Baltimore St. in downtown Jackson as an Airbnb rental. Last, but not least, with special gratitude for the wonderful, caring place that Kirkland Cancer Center is for patients and families, Laurie and David look forward soon to serving there as volunteers.
Blessings, continued prayers and healing, Laurie!
Message to the Congregation from Laurie HortonAs I will finish up my cancer treatment on April 3rd, I want to take this time to thank everyone for all the calls, cards, flowers, meals and most of all for your prayers. David and I have felt your love and concern during this difficult journey and it has meant more to us than words can express. May God bless you all!

This is a huge rite of passage for the confirmand students so we want to collectively celebrate this accomplishment and we want to celebrate all that God has done in their lives in this past year. We cordially invite you to join us at our celebration on April 23rd from 5-7PM at Andrews Chapel! This evening will be complete with Bubble Soccer©, yard games, food, and a closing ceremony for the confirmand students. Youth Ministry NeedsIn an effort to build up and upgrade the Youth Center upstairs, we are looking for a Foosball Table, a Ping Pong table, and a gaming system (Xbox, Playstation, etc.) If you feel so inclined to donate one or if you have any questions, please contact Christian Hesling! Thank you so much!
Lakeshore RetreatWhat a weekend! From March 10-12, thirteen Jackson First students and four adult volunteers joined around 250 other youth students for one of Lakeshore's largest retreats EVER! It was a memorable, cold, and incredible weekend as we all learned more about God's calling on each of our lives! Also, I would like to give a special shoutout to William Piercey, Gabby Maxwell, and Jessica Hesling for braving the elements and for pouring into our students that weekend!!!
