Faith First

As we begin Holy Week 2018, I invite you to fully participate in the mystery of the Lord’s passion, death and resurrection. These days are the central celebrations of our faith.

On Holy Thursday, we celebrate the institution of the Holy Eucharist. Fr. John will be with us to preside and preach at this evening’s Mass, which begins at 7:00 pm. Instead our regular collection, we collect monetary and food donations for our food pantry to assist in the feeding of those less fortunate. After the homily, we celebrate the Mandatum, or the washing of the feet. All are invited to come forward to have feet washed at that time.

On Good Friday, we celebrate the passion and death of Jesus on the cross. In ancient times the cross was a sign of punishment, but Jesus used the cross as a sign of victory! During the service (it is not a “Mass”), we read from the suffering servant passage from the prophet Isaiah Chapter 52 & 53. We hear the proclamation of the passion account from St. John, venerate the cross (you might see at the top of the cross a cover and inside of that is a relic of the true cross), and receive Holy Communion. Because there is no Mass, the Eucharist was consecrated on Holy Thursday. Also, on Good Friday, in Catholic

Churches throughout the world, there is a collection for the upkeep of the shrines in the Holy Land. Fr. Chuck will preside and preach this service which begins at 1:00 pm. There will also be a simple service that includes the Stations of the Cross and Veneration of the Cross which begins at 7:00 pm

On Holy Saturday, the Church waits in anticipation of the Easter joy. We gather at 8:00 pm outside the church to light the Easter fire and the new paschal candle. We sit in darkness and hear the story of creation, the exodus and other Old Testament scripture passages. Finally, the lights are turned on as the Gloria is sung. We then hear Mark’s resurrection story. Fr. Dave will preside and preach the Easter Vigil and Mass of the Resurrection. The great celebration of Easter Joy begins! We also welcome our catechumen and candidates who will receive the sacraments of initiation.

On Easter Sunday, don’t forget our Mass schedule is different. Masses are at 7:00 am, 8:45 am, 10:30 am, and 12 Noon.

I look forward to praying with all of you during this most special week of the Church year.

St. Matthias, pray for us,

Jeff Van Dalen Parish Director

P.S. I want to take few moments and thank the staff, Pastoral and Finance Councils, musicians, and parishioners for a wonderful installation ceremony last Saturday night. I was moved by your best wishes and congratulations. Your words of support and encouragement mean so much to me.

GR ACE. GR ATITUDE.

GENEROSITY.

Good Friday Collection Pope Francis has asked our parish to support Christians in the Holy Land. Through the Good Friday Collection, you join with Catholics around the world to stand in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace in a troubled land.

In these challenging times in the Middle East, your support means that our church will conduct parish ministry, provide Catholic education, feed the hungry, build housing for Christians, maintain shrines and operate refugee centers in the Holy Land. Christians, along with all of the clergy and religious who serve in the Holy Land, will deeply appreciate your prayers and financial help! The political, religious and military challenges in the Holy Land are more complex than ever. The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on Christians. Our parish will support Christians in the Holy Land through the Good Friday Collection, as requested by Pope Francis. Like Simon of Cyrene, you can help carry the cross under very difficult circumstances in the Holy Land. Please be generous!

Stewardship Just what does stewardship have to do with Holy Week and the Passion story? Actually, quite a lot. Holy Week provides an excellent chunk of time to be intentional about the stewardship of time, resources, and relationship. It provides seven days in which to focus on what really matters and to revisit in an intentional way the story of our Lord’s journey to the cross and resurrection from the bonds of death. It reminds us that even though we humans desire easy short-cuts and quick answers, sometimes we need to be deliberate about how we spend our hours, days, and finite resources.

David Haas and Marty Haugen, Live in Concert

Saturday, April 21, 10:00 a.m.

St. Joseph Chapel, 1501 S. Layton Blvd. (Greenfield Ave. at 27th St.), Milwaukee

Liturgical musicians David Haas and Marty Haugen, whose compositions have been popular worship mainstays for Christian congregations coast to coast for more than three decades, will make a rare concert appearance in Milwaukee on Saturday, April 21.

The performance will be hosted by the School Sisters of St. Francis in St. Joseph Chapel, on their near south side campus, 1501 S. Layton Blvd. (Greenfield Avenue at 27th Street). The 10:00 a.m. concert time was selected to allow liturgical ministers, choir members, and clergy to be able to attend.

Collectively, these composers can claim hundreds of compositions, and dozens of recordings and publishing projects. David Haas’ songs, includ-ing Blest Are They, You Are Mine, We Have Been Told, and Now We Remain, are popular favorites in congregational singing, and his Psalms for the Church Year remains a standard decades after it was first published. Millions of Christians also have the songs of Marty Haugen ingrained in their hearts, including Gather Us In, Canticle of the Sun (“The heavens are telling the glory of God”), Eye Has Not Seen, and We Remember, from his widely embraced Mass of Remembrance.

Tickets are $20 and selling fast. Write checks to: School Sisters of St. Francis Outreach Events; c/o Donna O’Loughlin; 1501 S. Layton Blvd., Milwaukee, WI 53215.

Convenient free parking is available in the St. Joseph Center lot at 29th St. and Orchard St. St. Joseph Center is also accessible by Route 27 and Route 56 bus lines. For more information, please contact Donna O’Loughlin at [email protected] or 414-385-5272.

Celiac sufferers We have been able to acquire hosts that will hopefully allow you to receive a consecrated host for Holy Communion. The information with the host says:

“Made from wheat starch and water, the gluten content of these breads is .01%. According to the magazine, Gluten-Free Living, Vol.9, No. 1a, experts from the Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland call this host “perfectly safe,” stating “you would have to eat 270 wafers every day to reach the danger point.” This being said, we still recommend that Celiac sufferers consult with their physicians before consuming these breads.” These hosts are stored completely separate from all other wheat products to avoid any cross-contamination. If this host would work for you, please contact Jeff Van Dalen, Parish Director, at 414-321-0893 to make arrangements so this host can be available for you.

AmazonSmile

Seton is set up on AmazonSmile! This is a quick and easy way

to bring in additional revenue for field trips or classroom

supplies. Here is how it works:

• Staff, families, and parishioners can use our unique charity link: https://smile.amazon.com/ch/47-5493941 to place orders with AmazonSmile instead of amazon.com.

• You can then search for products and place orders exactly as you have in the past.

• Amazon will donate 0.5% of the customer's total purchase to Seton Catholic Schools! We will direct those funds right back to our schools for field trips and school supplies.

Below are prayers and acts of kindness from the children’s weekly offerings:
