You Are My SunshineYou are my sunshine,
my only sunshineYou make me happy, when skies are gray
You’ll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don’t takemy sunshine away.
The other night dear,as I lay sleeping
I dreamt’ I held you in my arms. When I awoke dear,
I was mistakenSo I hung my head down
and cried.
The Paul Harris Fellow recogni-tion acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have
contributions made in their name, of US$1,000 to Th e Rotary Founda-tion of Rotary International. It was established in 1957 to show appreciation for and encourage sub-stantial contributions to what was then the Foundation’s only program, Rotary Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study, the precursor to Ambassadorial Scholarships. Th e fi rst Paul Harris Fellows in-clude 1937-38 RI Director Allison G. Brush and longtime RI Treasurer Rufus F. Chapin, both for donations made in 1946. Mrs. Adan Vargas was the fi rst woman to receive the recog-nition, for a gift made in 1953. Mrs. Harry L. Jones was the second, and one of only fi ve people recognized for contributions made in 1957. Early Paul Harris Fellows received a certifi cate of recognition. In 1969, the Foundation unveiled the fi rst Paul Harris Fellow medallion at the RI Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. Japanese metal artist Fiju Tsu-da created the piece under the direc-tion of then-past Foundation Trust-ee Kyozo Yuasa. Today, Paul Harris Fellows receive a certifi cate and pin.
Th ey are also eligible to purchase a Paul Harris Fellow medallion. Rotarians have a tradition of sup-porting the Foundation by honoring others. Ida LeTulle Taylor became a Paul Harris Fellow in 1978 when her husband, then-District Governor Vann Taylor, made a donation in her name in honor of their 34th wed-ding anniversary. Th e gift also made her the 25,000th Paul Harris Fellow. At the International Assembly in
1979, then-RI President-elect James Bomar challenged each Rotary club to make one non-Rotarian a Paul Harris Fellow. Th e Rotary Club of Pikesville, Maryland, USA, re-sponded by making a donation in
the name of Mother Teresa in 1980. Th e entertainer Pearl Bailey also be-came a Paul Harris Fellow through a joint eff ort of the Rotary clubs in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Many other notable fi gures have been named as Paul Harris Fellows, including U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Russian President Boris Yelt-sin, U.S. astronaut James Lovell, UN Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar, and Jonas Salk. Th e number of Paul Harris Fellows reached the one million mark in 2006.

Jeannie Garrett received a Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary Award at last week’s meeting. Brenda Walker, Linda Walton and Lea Ann Martinie
were instrumental in helping her achieve the Paul Harris Fellow.
In 1997, the Foundation standardized the designs of the medallion and lapel pin, using the same for men and women alike. Both bear the laurel wreath design used on the Multiple Paul Harris Fellow pins and are still in use today.
The fi rst Paul Harris Fellow medallion (left) and a later version. Various lapel and neck ribbons were used with this medallion throughout the years.
Left: Introduced in 1984, the blue-stone Multiple Paul Harris Fellow pin recognizes additional donations up to $5,000. Right: Red-stone Multiple Paul Harris Fellow pins were introduced in 1988 to bridge the gap between the blue fi ve-stone pin and Major Donor recognition levels.
