It is said that every great project starts with a great dream. We started dreaming when we first visited this undescribable Maroñas National Racecourse, back in March, 2001.
Had we not been both dreamers and businesspersons, we would probably have discarded the project that same day, since a great deal of imagination was needed to wake that dormant giant, unjustly abandoned. However, we were immediately bedazzled by the magic that had taken over that place and, fortunately, so were our shareholders, Grupo Latinoamericano de Inversiones (Latinamerican Investment Group) and Grupo Codere (Codere Group).
What person, even if not a true horse lover, can fail to connect this place with past equestrian personages and glories? Who can fail to imagine overhearing a conversation between Carlos Gardel and Irineo Leguisamo? Who can fail to picture a young maiden hiding a secret rendez vous with her beau by pretending to meekly accompany her horse-race enthusiast father? Who can fail to hear the hooves of the legendary Romántico, Yatasto and other horses, pounding as though they were still racing?
Anyone lacking the ability to imagine these things and the creativity necessary to face this awe-inspiring challenge, would not have been able to form part of our work team. We humbly began the search for people and companies willing to reach a goal that, at first, seemed unattainable.
And then came the great question: What constructing company to hire for the recovery of this building Lazarus? Our decision was a wise one; we chose Método Ingeniería, with whom we joined forces when we took over this estate and said to ourselves: “Maroñas, come forth!”
And Maroñas did. It rose from its lethargy with a balance that combines past glamour with current technology, and where comfort has not overstepped beauty.
To all those who had enough faith to help achieve this small “miracle”, our complete and affectionate appreciation.

The Maroñas National Racecourse restoration and refurbishing was one of those unique projects in which the companies, and each and every one of the technicians and professionals involved, have the chance of putting into practice almost all they have learnt throughout their academic and professional lives.
On various other occasions, our company had already had the chance of being involved in projects blending restoration and refurbishment techniques with the installation of the latest generation equipment, in a building of great historic and sentimental value for the people of a whole city.
In the case of Maroñas National Racecourse, in addition to all these issues, the specific possibility of making a decisive contribution to the rebirth of a complete economic activity that was certainly depressed and completely out of phase, technologically, if not dead altogether, was added. The socio-economic assimilation of over 70,000 Uruguayans working in horseracing is, undoubtedly, one of the most important aspects of this project.
The restoration and refurbishing of the Presidential Box, with its fibrocement ceiling, and the recovery of the awning that covers the Folle Ylla Grandstand, were our greatest concern. At the same time, being capable of maintaining the original architecture envisioned by Architect Fresnedo was one of the major achievements attained by the technical work team.
Reconstructing the racetracks, not only due to the immensity of the jobs involved but also due to the technology applied in its execution, allows us to affirm that Maroñas racecourse is one of the best in the world in its category.
Last but not least, the recuperation of green areas on the 60-hectare premises, restores one of the city’s most representative parks.
Our company took care to record each stage of the work in images, from its beginning to the re-opening of the Racecourse. This magnificent book comes about combining beautiful pictures and articles produced by Zona de Creación so that new generations can know and help maintain this space, which assuredly belongs to our historic and cultural heritage.

TANGO
“no olvides hermano, vos sabés,
mintiendo,
quema en una hoguera todo mi querer.
Por una cabeza
todas las locuras,
su boca que besa
borra la tristeza,
calma la amargura.
Por una cabeza
si ella me olvida
qué importa perderme,
mil veces la vida
para qué vivir...
Cuántos desengaños, por una cabeza,
yo juré mil veces, no vuelvo a insistir,
domingo,

In February 2002 I visited the ruined Maroñas Racecourse. A spectacle that was at the same time sorrowful and extraordinary. I was impressed by the perfection of the silence, for I could still remember the merry Sundays and the shouts arising from the public during the races. This one, on the other hand, was an unknown Maroñas, eerie, demanding the use of photographic memory.
In June of that same year a group of artists entered the Racecourse with the firm decision of recording in images, its distressing state. No one could believe what they were seeing. It took many trips —at daybreak, at noontime, at dusk—, hundreds of photographs and hours of filming by this heterogeneous group of idealists who took the name “Hipódromo / Zona de Creación” (Racecourse / Creation Zone). When the gates were closed in order to begin the restoration, we were in possession of a unique photographic document, since the devastated Maroñas would disappear forever.
Método del Uruguay Ingeniería S.A. was in charge of the, apparently impossible, task of reconstruction and functional adjustment of the facilities, and would perform a flawless job. The technical knowledge, joined with the appreciation for the historical monument, brought about a magnificent restoration job. As a complement, Método and Hípica Rioplatense Uruguay S.A. proposed that “Hipódromo / Zona de Creación” record its previous state, the process and the results of the recuperation in images, that way reconciling the modern engineering and the artistic experience, the architectural and the pictorial work, the commercial and the academic dimensions.
This combination of factors, as unexpected as it was gratifying, together with the cooperation of many other people, companies and institutions to whom we are deeply grateful, made possible the publication of this unique book.

Horseracing began in Uruguay as an entertainment event for people living in the countryside. The first jockeys were the “gauchos”, who rode criollo horses without saddles, in a straight line – uphill or downhill – sometimes including obstacles. The first horseracing track in Montevideo did not appear until 1855, in the neighbourhood now called “Piedras Blancas”, known then as “Azotea de Lima”. It immediately aroused a great interest among the people of Montevideo. As such, these first races were called “English races”. The press of the time described the racecourse’s opening as follows:
“Finally the eagerly-awaited day for this new type of entertainment has arrived. […] New things are a novelty and this was no exception. People from the countryside had been coming for days to watch the English races, as well as people from Buenos Aires, where races had already been seen. […] The morning passed, with the coachmen and stable owners hoping it would be repeated. They were left without a single horse. All of them had been rented in advance […] If this had happened in one working day, what would happen on a holiday! […] And how could we not stop for at least a few seconds to contemplate the beautiful view offered by such a large contest, filled with so many attractions! How could we not admire the beauty of a lady?”

In 1866, the Horseracing Society was formed and they acquired a property closer to the city, in the Curve of Maroñas. This was inaugurated as the second horseracing track, where “English races” and “National races” were held. National races were run in straight lines, bareback, and without appropriate attire. There were also no rules concerning the weight of the jockeys.
By 1874, the Horseracing Society was dissolved and the third horseracing track was opened in Montevideo very close to the previous one, in the newly plotted town of Ituzaingó. Although the official name was Ituzaingó Racecourse, it became known as Maroñas Racecourse.
On August 14th, 1877 the Government passed the First Racing Regulation that finally consolidated horseracing as a sport.
In 1888 the Montevideo Jockey Club was founded, and it began to operate at Maroñas Racecourse, where it concentrated all its activity.

Maroñas was inaugurated in 1874 under the name of Ituzaingó Racecourse, but was known as Maroñas Racecourse. Its name came from a Galician business and military man named Juan Francisco Maroñas. He was the owner of the farm where the Racecourse was built.
The first years of activity were run by English descendants. The old wooden box, consisting of simple backless platforms with a wooden gable roof, was moved again.

It was not until 1886 that the first establishment exclusively devoted to the breeding of thoroughbred racing horses was created. One year later, with Dr. José Pedro Ramírez as President of the Racing Commission, thoroughbred horses races were organized, which decreased the number of crossbred and criollo horses, and considerably improved the prizes.

To accommodate the growing number of spectators, the Jockey Club contracted the Italian Ángel Battaglia to build a box bigger than the first rudimentary box brought from Azotea de Lima. It was generally known as the “Battaglia box”.
The field had a perimeter of 1750 meters and was made entirely of black earth. It was very rudimentary and was comprised
of an uneven grass track. A white palisade was
built on the inside, though in many
sections, particularly the curves, there were only bushes.
The history of the Racecourse is inescapably entangled with the history of the Jockey Club, which organized the first horseracing meeting on February 3rd, 1889.

Medals the Jockey Club issued their members every year. They were a “ free pass” to the Racecourse and the Clubhouse located on 18 de Julio and Andes.
Another important impro-vement made during these first years was the creation of another track for the trai-ning of the horses. This was a heyday for horseracing; new thoroughbred stables appeared throughout the country, ran-chers and amateurs selected their best breeds to bring to Maroñas. The State suppor-ted the improvement of horse breeds, conscious of the eco-nomic benefit the increase in their production brought to the country. By decree dated March 22nd 1890, the Jockey Club was entrusted with the creation of a Stud Book. Five years later the first volume of
the Uruguayan Stud Book was published, obtaining recognition from the directors of the English Stud Book. Moreover, on June 26th, 1900 the Government passed a measure authorising the pla-cing of wagers on races carried out overseas.
The new century brought Uruguay growth and development. With the appearance of tramways, which facilitated transport to the Racecourse, breeding stables multiplied, the game evolved and the income from horseracing grew. As a result the institution entrusted the building of a new Seat to the French architect José Pedro Carré, Dean of the School of Architecture, in addition to accomplishment of other important changes to the Racecourse.

The surge in popularity of the sport made it essential to extend the facilities. Therefore, between 1938 and 1945 the Jockey Club commissioned the Paddock grandstand, the Folle Ylla grandstand, the People’s grandstand and a betting office to be built.
In 1938, the Jockey Club celebrated its 50th anniversary, guided by the same organic functions from which it was born:
The Racecourse was converted into a complex of excellent standards, with all the necessary facilities. It was a world onto itself. It presented job opportunities for thousands of men, generated part of the nation’s agricultural wealth and was a source of international prestige.
“to stimulate thoroughbred horse breeding, the true source of national wealth, which is the origin of prolific work and love
for the earth; to favour social life together in unselfish cultural environments, where political or religious passions do not
disturb the relationship between men; to direct the practice of a sport for the benefit of the State, a sport that is favored by
the crowd, for it moderates the energies with rough outdoor pleasure, devoting its profits to assistance and public charity.”

Horseracing activity continued to develop, accompanying the country’s ups and downs during the next decades. By the mid-70’s horse exportation was the country’s third greatest exported commodity. Approximately 70,000 people made a living on horseracing activities, not counting the large number of the sport’s fans.
But the industry was not immune to the difficult years Uruguay faced in the years to come.
The Racecourse was declared a Natio-nal Historical Monument and in 1990 was expropriated. In 1997, the Jockey Club definitively closed its doors, plun-ging Maroñas Racecourse into total abandonment.

We were driving around Montevideo and we stopped at Maroñas Racecourse’s decrepit entrance. The gate was closed. We were looking in, with a noticeable will to trespass and to wander freely around the empty patios, when a young man who was passing by in his bike warned us that the neighborhood was too dangerous to walk around innocently, leaving the car door unlocked. And in the blink of an eye he was gone. But before disappearing, he told us that, if we were interested in visiting, there was a guard at another gate two hundred meters away. He might let us in. And that is how we entered into the decadent monument.

“Objective chance”, as the Surrealists, who walked around Paris in their search for the extraordinarily ordinary —parks, statues, forgotten neighborhoods—, would call it. Their eyes scanned the modern surroundings in search of the ephemeral, to open up the gates to the marvelous. Even trivial objects transcended their own limits. The infinite laid within concrete forms: in the strangeness of the statuary, in the anonymous forms, in the metallic ghosts, in the lost gardens. And it was that same feeling of a world reaching out that we shared that summer afternoon at the ruined Racecourse, while the objects scattered around us turned into shreds of history.
At Maroñas we rediscovered the feeling of the transient. In many ways it was like seeing it for the first time; blurring the distinctions between time and image. Without us noticing, the project was born from the suggestion to document our journey around the run-down Racecourse. The project that would later turn into the “Zona de Creación” (Creation Zone) gathered, among others, photographers, architects, psychologists, writers, painters, graphic designers and dancers.

Maroñas was not ready for visitors or tourists. It was not a museum: it was closed to the public and it was about to be auctioned, maybe even torn down. There was nothing left of the old dreamers in search of fortune, nor the people cheering loudly and betting. Only the unconfessed ruins, very different from those of the majestic Castle of Heidelberg abandoned in the Mid nineteenth-century and that now evokes, as protected and conscious ruins, the ghost of the past. Nor did it permit an “intellectual tourism”, the classic “Grand Tour” or the kind of autobiographical novel that the Italian writer Claudio Magris wrote as a triumphant celebration of the history and culture of the Danube. It was certainly far from the crowds of professional tourists in their frantic pursuit of landmarks and pseudo-understanding to show off as tokens of their status.
Visiting Maroñas Racecourse was a pilgrimage to a defeated architecture; a stage without souvenirs, a dehumanized theater, a mysterious language crumbling into desolation. To name things with extreme precision was a way of hiding them; lucid, relentlessly analytic syntax, would not do justice to the magical-quality of this journey. There was no place to rest. The flâneur, then, had no other choice but to forget about clichés, to wander around disoriented in an unknown territory that was revealing itself before the eyes.

The intensity of this revelation would have probably looked excessive to the boy on the bike. The truly wonderful things should be super-modern, while the ruins should be the exact opposite, the emulation of time in hell. Zona de Creación had to capture fragments that were not posed, that were not “acted” or set like they wanted to be captured. They were not neatly arranged on stands and well illuminated behind windows. Nor were they fragments that merely revealed a certain financial or social status. They were vast, at times unapproachable, emanations from a real past.
“I am in the photograph, therefore I exist,” we could say about the unconscious ruins. History does not vanish; nor does it lay subordinate to the silence of image. The general feeling is that of neglect. No object is being nostalgically preserved in its essence, but rather, exposed in its absolute solitude. The colors of the setting sun dyed the silent remains and undermined the realism of the moment. What matters is that elevator and that broken chair that struggles stubbornly to remain standing. The objects themselves had fallen into delirium, since they belonged, like fairy tales, to the realm of the impossible.

It does not matter much that by the end of the nineteenth century the barber’s seat had been mechanized, or that there was a marked difference between the American and the European models. Or that mounted on the column, it was both able to recline and revolve, raised and lowered by means of a hydraulic mechanism installed within. What really matters is that that particular barber’s seat at Maroñas no longer fulfills its function.
We move across a universe haunted by ghosts, where the exploration of every imperfection sheds new light. Such light is only possible after original sin, when the cosmos can no longer be regarded as pure. Immersed in this atmosphere of shadow and light, crossed by lines, circles, squares and arabesque shapes, the “third sense” that Roland Barthes attributed to the image, becomes intensified. There are no smells or noises, just the cult of symmetry and the geometrical aspiration to go beyond the limits.
Diverse interior spaces scream that reality excludes any form of catharsis: the box offices inside the Main Building reject any sentimentality, while the jockeys’ shirts scattered on the floor and the peeled walls form textures that flirt with strangeness. What else do these images tell us? That chaos has a limit. The old jockeys’

shirts have been deprived of any sort of future and they belong to that which disappears without a trace. Where are they going? Most likely to the incinerator, to be erased. What photography preserves is their final moment. We can imagine the beginning of the process: factories, dressmakers and sewing machines. Then the bright colors displayed on the chests of the jockeys, the mud, the sweat of the race and the laundry. Over and over again, until decadence is cast over them like a shadow and the rags are forgotten in a dark corner of the Racecourse.
Many are subtle and discreet photographs of facades covered by creepers; photographs that renew the desire to inhabit those spaces that the decay has made obsolete. The old exterior betting offices constitute a tidy cosmos that confuses the limit between art and life. What calls my attention is the amount and size. An endless line of betting offices, all closed. Marble staircases, wooden benches, ample patios: all built for a crowd that has disappeared.
The photographic eye is insatiable. Orpheus, armed with his camera, amassed statues, horses and colors in a surprising combination of details that seem to bring matter back to life. Looking at the statue of the wild boar, I remember how as a child I used to hang around its neck. Very quickly, inconspicuously, for it was prohibited and there was the guard, already walking towards me. Now nobody watches it.

Equally abandoned was The Victory of Samothrace. We used to play football not too far from there. We did not know its name, not to mention that the original was kept in the Louvre and that the avant-gardist F. T. Marinetti had once compared it to a racecar. To us it was just a meeting point: “Three o’clock at the statue”. When I saw it again, after so many years, lost in the long grass, I was reminded of a line by Yeats: “And still I dream he treads the lawn, walking ghostly in the dew, pierced by my glad singing.”
If photography attributes importance, certain images give meaning
to the unseen. They are examples of repetition. The wooden benches are easily recognized, but their importance does not lie so much in their functionality rather than in their modification: they could well be animals or paths. We are appreciating them as though we had never seen them before, as sinuous parasols or sunken beds. These photographs confirm our intuition: that in effect we are seeing a Maroñas that could have never been imagined. Those who designed and built the Racecourse could not even have come close to anticipating that one day it would be the opposite of grandeur, covering an area of 60 hectares.

Parcialmente anegada. Oscura. Olor a podrido.
The Computer Room produced a strange effect: it was impossible to identify the photographed object in a room where there was an assumed technical rationality; other photographs, however, were vectors of a reality “out of place”. There were dogs where there should not be, vegetation out of control, broken windowpanes, useless tables and heaters out of order.
When we got to the Pelouse, it was completely empty. Partially flooded. Dark. The smell of something rotten. A dead dog. It was inconceivable that in that bleak space there once were people betting and eating chorizos al pan. But the photographs are blinding. It is Maroñas between the possible and impossible. All that overwhelming scenery, which the eye inspects like a detective of the marvelous, can be summarized in four words: “Waiting for the miracle”. Melancholic objects? I would rather call it Zona de Creación, a zone redeemed by photography: fragments of life, recognition, revelation; the singular state of things just before the miracle of restoration.

We came across old furniture, faded paintings and photographs, old jockey shirts, a variety of items that had been forgotten and rendered useless. The most valued discoveries were the complete equipment of the printing house which prepared the Racecourse’s programs and studbooks containing data on bree-ders and the most outstanding horses, and a strange Barber’s chair from the old Barber Shop.

An unusual factor was the invasion of pigeons in the Folle Ylla Grandstand. Its large windows without glass favored the continual flight back and forth of these birds. Getting rid of them without hurting them demanded much effort and ingenuity. The deterrents placed on the parapets, a recording imitating the cry of a Falcon (Falcon Columbarius) and various people armed with nets, were useless to free the grandstand of these intruders. Eventually, as the works advanced, they slowly changed their habits and left.

RECOVERY OF THE CANTILEVERED ROOFS RECUPERACIÓN DE LOS TECHOS VOLADOS
The dome slabs were very deteriorated, especially the dome underside and their mortar plaster. It was thus decided to completely demolish the underside of the slabs and to hang a reinforced concrete ceiling from the existing slabs. This solution allowed the original cantilevered roof, characteristic of Architect Fresnedo’s grandstands, to be restored. The result was highly satisfactory.

The analysis of color, texture and sheen of each surface, as well as the trials, samples and evaluations taken, allowed us to determine the procedures to be followed for the recuperation and cleaning of each material and, essentially, to take decisions respecting the incorporation of new materials, which had to be integrated to complete those which abandonment had rendered useless.
By way of example, we can quote the treatment of the marble, monoliths, wood, decorated tiles, railings, ironwork, bronzes and plasters of the many finishes of all the different spaces.

Since many of the ceiling panels were not recoverable, they had to be replaced by new ones. In order to do this, resin molds were made from the existing panels.
