MOMMY, WHO IS THAT?

Joe Romanazzi- Grand Knight As many of you know, I help out with funerals at St. John the Evangelist Church. Just before the start of a funeral last year, a young boy and his mother were going through the double doors leading down the main isle to the altar, when the child looked up and noticed the large cross with the crucified Christ hanging on it. AN ANOINTED PROPHETIC WORD

Miguel Sabral- Deputy Grand Knight and Program Director The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the path of righteousness of his namesake. Yea, though I walk the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff; they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me, all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. PSALM: 23 Brother Knights: can you look at the Faith in Action spread sheet that we passed out at the last Business Meeting on 7/10/2018? We need volunteers in the four categories of Faith, Family, Community, Life. There are some open spaces to be filled. COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF TO NOMINATE A NEW HEAD OF

THE DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS Dan Aseltine- Vererans Director

On May 18, 2018 President Donald Trump announced that he will be forwarding the name of the Acting Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Robert Leon Wilkie, to the US Senate for confirmation as the permanent Secretary. If confirmed by the Senate, Wilkie would replace David Shulkin, who was dismissed by President Trump by tweet on March 28, 2018. Wilkie has been temporarily serving in the role of acting secretary since Shulkin's departure. Managing the Department of Veterans Affairs is a huge task, as it is the second largest agency in the federal bureaucracy, with more than 360,000 employees. Earlier, President Trump indicated that he would be nominating former White House physician Rear Admiral Ronny Jackson of the US Navy. Admiral Jackson withdrew his name from consideration and remains on active duty with the US Navy. Wilkie, 55, is a colonel (intelligence) with the US Air Force Reserve and the son of a highly decorated Army lieutenant colonel (artillery) who was wounded three times in Vietnam. Wilkie earned his law degree from Loyola University in New Orleans and his Master of Laws in International and Comparative Law from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. He also holds a Masters in Strategic

Studies from the US Army War College. Wilkie is the recipient of the Department of Defense Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest civilian award granted by the Department of Defense. The latest information regarding the next Veterans Stand Down at Cal Expo on the last weekend of August: If you sign up as a volunteer, please identify yourself as a member of the Knights of Columbus. On the volunteer page, there is a box entitled "Company, if applicable" where you can enter the phrase "Knights of Columbus, Council 4970." If you attend the event and take any pictures, please email them to me for a follow-up article in the Paladin. Please share this email with others as you wish. https://signup.com/client/invitation2/secure/2372368/false#/invitation . Thank you for your support of homeless Veterans!

TWO FORMER COUNCIL 4970 MEMBERS ORDAINED AS PERMANENT DEACONS Joe Romanazzi, Grand Knight Two former members of our council-- Jack Wilson and Keith Johnson were ordained as Permanent Deacons for the Diocese of Sacramento on June 30, 2018. Bishop Jaime Soto presided over the ceremony that was held at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in downtown Sacramento. The ceremony was broadcast live on Facebook by the Diocese. PGK Deacon Larry Niekamp was present at the Ordination as was Brother Don Cooper who sang in the Cathedral Choir. Also taking part in the ceremony from our Council were PGK Michael Langer, PGK Peter Kilkenny, and Brother John Bartel who served in the 4th Degree Color Guard. A reception honoring the new Deacons was held the next day at St. John the Evangelist Church’s Parish Hall following the noon Mass. A number of Lady Knights from our Council helped to organize the event. In addition, they decorated the tables and set out the food. The newly ordained Deacons are now members of St. John the Evangelist Council 16612 following the creation of that council in 2017. The Brothers of Council 4970 offer our congratulations and our best wishes to Deacon Jack and Deacon Keith as they begin their new ministries. May God richly bless them and their families.

FAMILY OF THE MONTH Mario La Schiazza and Gerald Marenich, Family Activities

Congratulations to the Jerry and Sandy Butler family, Arden Carmichael Council's June 2018 Family of the Month. Jerry and Sandy have been members of St John the Evangelist Parish since 2010, where Sandy has served as Eucharistic Minister and taught Religious Education at several other parishes. They have been married for twenty-one

years, and have lived in the Sacramento Area for thirty years. Between them they raised five sons. Peter Riley went to Del Campo High School, while Brian Riley and Aaron Riley went to Highlands HS. Patrick Butler graduated from Casa Robles HS, while Michael graduated from Madera HS. Sadly Michael passed away in October 2017. Jerry has a Bachelor of Arts in Mechanical Engineering and a graduate degree in construction. Now retired, Jerry was employed as a Construction Administrator with UC-Davis. Sandy has a Bachelor of Arts Education and is a teacher at Mariposa Elementary School. Jerry became a First Degree member of the Knights of Columbus on November 23, 2016 and received his Second and Third

Degrees at the Exemplification held at St John's Parish in March of this year. Jerry regularly attends council meetings and with his woodworking skills, he made a beautiful wood replica of the Knights of Columbus iconic logo, which is prominently displayed at council meetings. Jerry has been heavily involved in the Boy Scouts of America, where he has served as a Scout Master and Scout Leader. Sandy enjoys quilting, gardening, and enjoys artistry in wood. Arden-Carmichael Council 4970 and its members are justly proud, and indeed fortunate to have the Butler family as members of the council.

IF IT’S JUNE, IT'S A BBQ!

Peter Mendenhall, editor

The traditional June business meeting was held again this year that featured a delicious BBQ dinner and

election of officers. The food was excellent, the company friendly, and the elected officers worthy. We Knights do

like to meet, but we like eating even better!

LADIES NIGHT OUT Peter Mendenhall, editor

Speaking of eating, here we go again!!! Didn’t we just do the BBQ?? Well, at least the Lady

Knights deserved a special meal. Say, did you notice that Todd Wilson is in both pictures??

INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS Joe Romanazzi, Grand Knight

Pictured are the installed KofC 4970 officers for the Columbian 2018-2019 year. The installation ceremony at OLA St. John’s Hall had a great turnout and there was a joyful get-together later at Mark and Monica's.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL 4970 FIREWORKS BOOTH

Joe Kievernagel- Membership Director Our fireworks booth chairmen, Joe Kievernagel and Don Cotton, thank all volunteers at the weeklong booth operation. Many of the volunteers worked more than one shift and some just about the whole week. The 4th was hectic, closing late, but bringing in some $14,000 gross. Overall approximately $33,000 was raised bringing in well over our goal of $10,000 net to fund our scholarships and other youth programs for the current Columbian Year.

LUNCH ON THE RIVER! Jean Gobbo- Ladies Program

This month we will go to Joe’s Crab Shack (Old Sacramento) on August 15th at 1PM. Please contact our coordinator Roni DiLeo at 916-961-0178 so we know how many to expect.

WEDDING BELLS HAVE RUN IN OUR COUNCIL! One of the most special Knights in our council had himself a very special event: Michael Langer, Worthy just-about-everything, was married to Lady Knight Shannon Blecha Langer in a beautiful ceremony at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Sacramento. The council wishes both the best on their honeymoon in Hawaii, and forever forward!

The Bible contains two covenants: one by Moses and the other by Christ. While they are both in the Bible, they are in sharp conflict.

THE DUEL COVENANTS Chuck Cuny- Past Grand Knight

Moses climbed Mount Horeb and met with “Yahweh,” Who gave him two stone tablets with instructions for the people that He chose to adopt. Moses pledged the Israelites in a blood oath to swear allegiance to Yahweh’s commandments. Moses and the Decalogue “ten words” were/are the most significant point of the Old Testament. The Decalogue stone tablets were carried in a chest called the “Ark of the Covenant”. Throughout Hebrew history, the Ark of the Covenant, even though physically lost, was still central to Hebrew worship. Moses composed five books that the Hebrews called the “Torah” or “Law”. While other books of the Bible were considered inspired, the Torah was God’s words

dictated to Moses and carried far, far more weight. The Hebrew people were a theocracy guided by Yahweh. A special group of scholars called the Sanhedrin were ordained to interpret the Law for Yahweh. The Great Sanhedrin consisted of 70 members plus a High Priest, lived in Jerusalem and was like a Supreme Court. In each large city there was a lesser Sanhedrin of only 23 members that followed the lead of the Great Sanhedrin. Salvation for the Hebrew came from strict obedience to the law. The interpretation of the Law by the Sanhedrin covered almost every facet of Hebrew life. On the Sabbath, for example, Hebrews were not allowed fire. Even today, many orthodox Jews will not drive a car on the Sabbath as the spark plugs constitutes fire. The first Jewish/Christians saw Christ as an extension of Moses and continued to hold that salvation came from obedience to the Sanhedrin and the Law of Moses. Saint Paul made a great effort to show Christ as a New Covenant of flesh and blood - not one carved in stone. In the “Jerusalem Conference” (48 A.D.), the apostles formally separated Christianity from the stifling interpretations of Torah by the Sanhedrin. The O.T. Moses covenant was/is a covenant of strict obedience to the law. The Christ covenant is a covenant of coming to Christ in love. The Catholic Church is still embattled between these two extremes. Fundamentalists focus on obedience to commandments, the sinful nature of man and the fear of hell. On the other extreme, there are liberal Catholics who lean on the mercy of God and only occasionally attend Mass and cruise through life with little regard for the Church’s dogmatic teaching. Epilogue – Pope John XXIII called the non-dogmatic Second Vatican Council which made sweeping changes to the Church. Paul VI ended the Council with deep regrets with the Council implementation. Pope Benedict XVI made strenuous effort to bring back the older order. Pope Francis is now making sweeping liberal changes widening the gap between the fundamentalist and liberals with increased tension in the Church.
