Hello Treasure Valley!

I am a mother of three wonderful adult young men; Nick, Michael and Chris. I have been married to Raymond, their tolerant and supportive father for over 34 years. I am an avid reader, a lover of people, animals, nature, history, independent films, folk arts, music and poetry. I have worked serving our community since I moved to the Treasure Valley over 16 years ago. I was born in Mexico to a migrant field worker father and seamstress mother. I became a resident of California in the early 60s, got married, then transferred to Oregon where my children were born...and now Idaho is the place I call home. This is where my grandchildren will be born and where my wonderful community makes me proud with their continuous contributions. I would seek understanding and acceptance of one another’s unique qualities as well as our cultural similarities. The fact that Palacio Magazine is a bilingual magazine makes pertinent information highly accessible to anyone who can read English or Spanish. The theme of this magazine will focus on Education first, Family and Community; but also on cultural themes such as the arts, traditions, history etc. I truly look forward to the opportunities and benefits I envision on the horizon for our community via Palacio de Treasure Valley magazine.

anna Marissabel woke up with butterflies in her stomach, remembering that TODAY was her day. Anna’s Quinceañera was

something the family had been looking forward to since she was a little girl. An added bonus was that Anna’s birthday fell on a Saturday so she was able to have her fantasy party on her exact birthday. The family opted for a traditional event… mass, dinner, Mariachis and a dance afterwards. Lupe, Anna’s mom, reminisces about how they would talk and talk about it, and before she knew it, her little girl was turning 15! Lupe, Anna and Shara Rowley,

from SC Bridal Shop in downtown Nampa, designed and made a dress resembling Belle’s gown from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. For Anna Marissabel, turning 15 meant more privileges, and naturally more responsibilities. Anna’s parents now permit her to date, which is the fun part. In many ways planning a Quinceañera is like planning a wedding. It was also nice that Anna’s younger brother, Andres, was standing in as a chamberlain as a part of the event. The nine young men and young women, which included Anna herself, went in for dress and tuxedo fittings,

attended dress rehearsals for the traditional waltz, and constantly talked and planned out the event details. Quinceañeras always include every family member who can possibly attend. While dancing the Father/Daughter dance, Anna and Andres reflected on how much fun the day had been. Anna loves to dance, and it was the best way for her and her friends to share their excitement and burn off some energy. Anna never sat down once she was on the dance floor. The DJ played a variety of music; from Tejano, cumbias, and salsa to country-western, hip-hop

and the ever popular “Electric Slide”. What would Anna advise girls planning for their Quinceañera? “Stick with it. It might get stressful but in the end, it is really fun. On the actual day, enjoy all of it no matter what goes wrong. You should enjoy it, make the most of it and dance the entire time.” Exhausted but smiling, friends and families left the party having created a wonderful memory for Anna and her young friends. At an age where many young women lose much of their self-esteem, and worry about their body and self-image; instead, this family celebrated their daughter’s transition from childhood to young adulthood by lifting her self-esteem with their love, acceptance and respect. As for Anna, she slept like a princess that night… after all, she had been the belle of the Ball!

The origins of Quinceañera can be traced as far back as 500 B.C. from the Aztec culture. The new 15-year-old was considered a full-fledged member of society. In the 1800’s, the Victorian era in Mexico brought a celebration into the culture which included the valz (European waltz) and the term Chamberlain (companion). Many Quinceañeras are sponsored by Madrinas and Padrinos (Godparents) who make the arrangements for food, musicians, DJ, church, and the celebration. This coming of age tradition has been adapted and celebrated today by many Latinos in the U.S. with food, dancing, music and words of wisdom from adults or a religious ceremony at a community gathering or a church. In the U.S. having a large Quinceañera can show socio-economic differences; from modest, family-style gatherings, to more alternative Quinceañeras that emphasize values on the traditions and culture; this can also range to larger expansive parties where some girls are actually taken on cruises to celebrate their coming of age party. Within the Latino culture, there are varying degrees of diversity. Families differ in their styles, traditions, religious beliefs and preferences. P

Puede ser que sea complicado y estresante pero al final, es muy divertido. En el día de la fiesta, disfrútalo todo sin darla importartancia que algo salga mal. Debes disfrutarlo, aprovéchalo al máximo - y baila sin parar.” Cansadisimos pero sonrientes, los amigos y familiares dejaron la fiesta habiendo creado un recuerdo lindo para Anna y sus amistades. Qué manera de expresar el amor, aceptación y valoración hacia una joven cuando más lo necesita. A una edad en la cual muchas chicas pierden mucha de su auto estima, y se preocupan por su cuerpo e imagen. Esta familia celebró la transición de la niñez a la mujer adulta

mientras levantaron su auto estima con amor y respeto. Estos recuerdos son lo más importante en la experiencia de todas los jovenes. Anna Marissabel dormio como una princesa esa noche. Después de todo…¡había sido la Bella de la fiesta!
