The Update Newsletter
October 2018

It has been a month of changes for our church community. Sheryl Downey ended her tenure with the Church and we now have Tresa Poe for our new Administrative Assistant. She is adapting quickly to the many ins and outs of the responsibilities of the position. She is proving to be a real help for me as well so we welcome her to our ministry. We had a situation with a faucet that sprung an unexpected leak. Carpets were wet and had to be dried and then re-laid. Additionally a number of plumbing issues were addressed and toilets replaced. Hopefully we can avoid a similar accident in the future. Changes are occurring as well as we are combining two committees, Memorial and Endowment. The two are responsible for the recording of gifts to the church, but have different purposes. The issues will still be separated, but we now have one committee to work on these matters. Speaking of which there are areas of ministry for person who want to work monetary bequeath gifts for distribution and allocation. If this is something you might have interest in the Nominating Committee would welcome a visit with you. It is something to prayerfully consider. Changes are also felt deeply as events are occurring in families. Mary Morin is at Hearthstone in Moses Lake and had a recent surgery. Don visits her daily at meal times to help her eat. We certainly miss her at church. Randy Senn has now been at Hearthstone for five months. He knows everyone and makes his way in a wheel chair. He sure is a good conversation person. His foot is showing improvement, but he still needs to wear the boot. He misses the church community and we miss his singing in the choir. Lastly, we mourn the death of Herb Reynolds. He blessed us with his warm spirit and singing in the choir. At this writing we are in the process of planning his Memorial Service on Saturday, September 22nd at 11 AM. Many of you have provided food and visits with Maggie. Fortunately her sister Darlene was able to come from Minnesota to be with her and the family during this time. We
all will miss Herb, I always looked forward to see him wheeling into church on Sunday morning. Truly, he takes a portion of each heart in our church community. The seasons change, summer is winding down, and cooler days are ahead. Before long, leaves will display a dance of color, the wind and some rain, with shorter days will call creation into rest. Maybe we too will find rest in the One who is sovereign and in love with this world, the One we trust in, through thick and thin, knowing we are not making the journey alone. God is with us! So many changes, but we come back again, and again, lost in wonder, love, and praise.

What is MOPS? Our gatherings are where moms can meet to share their hopes, fears and insights, in a format that works with their schedules, that doesn’t neglect their faith nor their womanhood, their motherhood nor their
purpose, their heart nor their mind. We meet every other Thursday at Our
Redeemer Presbyterian Church, begin-ning September 20th- December from 9
am -11:00 am.

Church Council is planning to participate in Trunk or Treat again this year from 4-6pm on
Wednesday, October 31st. Please let the church office know if you can decorate a truck and
hand out candy. We will also be accepting donations of candy if you can’t be there that night.
Last year we saw 500+ kids and had hot dogs and hot
drinks available, which parents appreciated very
much. We plan to do this again. Let us know if you can
help volunteer for the community event.
Men’s Group will be meeting Saturday,
October 6th at 8:30AM for breakfast and
fellowship. The video Soul Keeping with
John Ortberg will be shown and discussed.
All men are welcome and encouraged to
attend.

“I call to you, Lord, come quickly to me; hear me when I call to you. May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.” Psalm 141: 1-2
One of the most wonderful gifts we are given is the gift of prayer. We can pray for one another in times of need as well as times of celebration.
To join the email prayer chain, email Tresa at [email protected]

Every second Wednesday of the month from 10 am until 11 am – Pastor Don leads a Caregiver Support Group. Come and find support and understanding. Come and tell your story. Come and have time to rest in the caring arms of Christ’s love. if that time does not work for you, please call and set up an appointment.
Bible Study: Pastor Don leads a Bible Study group every Wednesday at 2pm in the Fireside Room. All are welcome and encouraged to join.
Memory Café: For those that are having memory loss issues. The Memory Café meets every second Monday of the month at 1:30pm.
Looking Forward It’s so easy to look back on all the activities and missions our congregation has participated in through the years. Now we have a far more important challenge. We need to look forward together at how we will continue to serve God, our church and the community. We have some very well received missions in place such as Memory Café and Community Suppers. We have a large facility which can host events in the Fellowship Hall, small group studies/meetings in the classrooms, a well-maintained kitchen that is certified by the Health District and a beautiful sanctuary that can host worship services, concerts, recitals and similar gatherings. So given all of the assets we have in hand where can our congregation go on this journey of love and service now? How can we ensure that our facility is used more and perhaps even used to generate more income to support church missions? How do we want to celebrate Advent Season, Christmas, Holy WeeK? Do we want to revisit a Family Night on Wednesdays? More potlucks after Worship? Please mark your calendar for Saturday morning Oct. 27 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. as your time to join in planning for what we’ll share along this journey into the future. If you have ideas you’d like to pass along now, contact Church Council chair Mary Holloman or talk to Pastor Don.

Pastor Don Dunn will be out of the church from Oct 18th to the 26th.
Name Tags: Sending an order this month. Does anyone need a new one?
IMPORTANT…A new church directory is in the making. Some of our people
don’t have pictures in the old church directory and newer attendees need to be
in the new one. So we are asking for them in one of these three ways:
1. Sunday, October 7th after church in the Fireside Room have one taken by
Marilyn Bluhm.
2. Email a picture to the church at [email protected]
3. Bring a picture into the office to Tresa, the secretary, to be scanned.
Please notify the office of any new phone numbers, addresses, or email as well.
The October 15th meeting of UMW will have guests from the Moses
Lake UMC. It will be a potluck at noon with the hostesses Tura Yount,
Ann Chandler, and Vivian Plew.
The program will be about Joni Eareckson Fada who was paralyzed in
1967, 50 years ago. She is a Christian author, painter, radio host and
found of Joni and Friends. All ladies of the church are invited.
The Community Memory Café will meet Monday, October 8th from 1:30 - 3 pm in our Fellowship Hall.
Christy Price will be the snack hostess. Ellen White and Tura Yount will be at the Welcome table.
