That's human nature. If you buy a shirt that the salesman tells you will not shrink, you would get pretty angry if it did shrink. You probably would not buy any more of those shirts. Or if you buy a pair of shoes that are supposed to be of a certain quality, you expect to get that quality. If the shoes are of poorer quality ... if you did not think you got your money's worth . . . you probably would steer clear of that store in the future. It's the same way when it comes to buying pulp or paper. The people who buy Brown Company's products expect to get their money's worth. They expect to get the quality for which they pay. That's only right. They should get the quality they expect. What happens if they do not get their money's worth . . . if they do not get the quality they expect? They become dissatisfied. They go some place else to buy somebody else's product. It may go even further than that. The dissatisfied customers may do much to discourage other .people from buying our products. That's important to all of us. Every company must have customers if it is going to stay in business very long. No company can last very long if nobody buys its products. But if the people who buy our products get their money's worth ... if they are satisfied with our products . . . they will continue to buy them. They may even recommend them to their friends. That means more orders for our prod- ucts, which in turn means steady work. It's the job of all of us to see that the customers are satisfied. It's the job of management to see that we have the right ma- terials with which to make our products. It's the job of the men and women at the machines to see that those materials are converted into the best possible products. Mr. Landry is one of those enterprising Brown Company people who have a spare-time business of their own. Among them was Odule Montminy, blow pit foreman at Burgess, who began work with the company 48 years ago. Others retiring included: Alex Dube, a millwright., who had 39 years service. Alfred E. Bilodeau, a gate- man and former foreman at the Log Pond, who had 38 years service. Pitre Lavigne of the Bur- gess wood room, who had 33 years service. Harry Gould, hog man at Burgess, who had 30 years service. Bartlett, Dustin Promoted In Prod. Control Dept. Two promotions in the Pro- duction Control Department have been announced. Otis J. Hold Bermico Sales Meeting Discussion of the annual sales forecast and new prod- ucts highlighted the annual sales meeting of the Bermico Division, held recently in the New York Office. Attending the all-day meet- ing were Brown Company peo- ple from New York, Berlin, San Francisco and Chicago. They included President F. G. Coburn; Vice President D. P. Brown; J. G. Skirm, John Noble, W. F. Bishop, F. W. Mark, F. C. Stakel, and R. E. LaPlante of the New York Sales Office; Earl Van Pool and Robert K. Loane of the San Francisco Sales Office; L. E. Wallace of the Chicago Sales Office, and Plant Man- ager Harry Sweet of the Ber- mico Manufacturing Division. "Jack" To Design National Safety Council Posters The fame of Jack Rodg- erson, staff cartoonist for The Brown Bulletin, is spreading far and wide. And his drawings are go- ing to be seen by more and more people. Recently, Jack, as com- pany safety engineer, at- tended the annual sessions of the National Safety Council in Chicago. While there, he was chosen to serve as a member of the executive committee on vis- ual aids for the Pulpwood Logging section of the pulp and paper group. He was asked to sharpen up his sketching pencils and design some safety posters for the National Safety These p c B <r a i 1 jr Orders Collector For No. 6 Boiler At Heine Plant Action Follows Detailed Study Brown Company has taken the first definite step in a pro- gram to eliminate the fly ash problem created by the soft coal boilers in the Heine Plant. Problem "Difficult One" Works Manager E. E. Morris said that an order has been placed with the Boston office of the American Blower Cor- poration of Detroit, Mich., for a fly ash collector to be in- stalled on No. 6 boiler at the Heine Plant. Mr. Morris said that the fly ash problem has been a diffi- cult one and that it has been the subject of an active study for more than a year by com- pany engineers and consult- ants. A variety of possible SC^L. which will all carry some of the Jack's well-known cartoon characters, will be reprinted for distribution to pulpwood logging camps around the country. Brown Company employees already this year have suf- fered seven more injuries re- sulting in time lost from work than they did during the whole of 1948. They have suffered 10 more lost-time accidents during the first 12 periods of this year than they did during the first 12 periods of 1948. 11 More In 12th Period Eleven more lost-time acci- dents occurred during the 12th period. They were acci- dents that meant plenty of pain for 11 people. And they meant money lost because they could not work. Yes, accidents hurt the per- son — and they hurt his pock- etbook, too. Let's look at a comparison of the number of lost-time accidents in each plant during these 12 periods and during the first 12 periods of last year. Then we'll take a good look at how the more re- cent accidents happened—and what happened to the people. A Message from the Works ManagerYou have to give a man his money's worth if you expect him

to buy your products.That's human nature.If you buy a shirt that the salesman tells you will not shrink,

you would get pretty angry if it did shrink. You probablywould not buy any more of those shirts.

Or if you buy a pair of shoes that are supposed to be of acertain quality, you expect to get that quality. If the shoesare of poorer quality . . . if you did not think you got yourmoney's worth . . . you probably would steer clear of thatstore in the future.

It's the same way when it comes to buying pulp or paper.The people who buy Brown Company's products expect to

get their money's worth. They expect to get the quality forwhich they pay. That's only right. They should get the qualitythey expect.

What happens if they do not get their money's worth . . .if they do not get the quality they expect?

They become dissatisfied. They go some place else to buysomebody else's product. It may go even further than that.The dissatisfied customers may do much to discourage other.people from buying our products.

Seven More Accidents ThisYear Than In All Of 1948

If you're interested in fig-ures, here are a few—but theyare not good.

Joseph A. Sanchagrin, for-merly a super-calendar oper-ator, died October 26. He wasborn in Disraeli, P. Q., but hadlived in Berlin since 1900.

JOSEPH E. DOYERJoseph E. Doyer, a veteran

engineer with the Berlin MillsRailway, died suddenly Octo-ber 27 at his camp at CedarPond. Mr. Doyer was born in1881 at St. Lambert, P. Q.

NOW THAT NOVEMBERhas rolled around once more,many of us have already be-gun making plans for theholidays ahead.

Many of you no doubt haveyour own favorite way of fix-ing the Thanksgiving Dayturkey, and also probablyhave served the family's fa-vorite pie or pudding formany years, and would notcare to upset tradition bychanging the menu this year.

With these thoughts inmind, it hardly seemed worth-while to compile a column ofpointers on "how to" anythingfor Thanksgiving.

Instead, here are some sug-gestions you might care togive a little thought to whenworking on your Christmasplans. I can almost hear someof you making such remarksas "She's rush ing thingssomewhat, isn't she?" Per-haps so, but after all, verysoon now we'll be remindedthat we have only so manymore shopping days untilChristmas, and that's also areminder that we have onlyso many more planning andpreparing days left, too!

M A N Y MAGAZINES thismonth and next will be full

of wonderful ideas on whatto make for Christmas. Whenyou come across somethingwhich particularly appeals toyou, why not tear out thatpicture or those directionsright then and there, or atleast copy them down andkeep for future reference.

I've found it handy to keepa type of file handy anaTwEenI come across something per-taining to Christmas, for ex-ample, I cut it out or copywhatever information I want,then put it into my file under"Christmas." Later, when Ihave more time or feel likeexperimenting in the kitchen,I go through those clippingsand get to work. I just dis-covered a wonderful newrecipe for applesauce cake thisway. I'd had .̂ in my fileunder "Cakes" for quite some-time and just got around totrying it out a week or so ago,

Could Happen At HomeThose are definitely acci-

dents that could happen toanyone. And they are thetype of thing that could hap-pen even at home.

One Cascade worker was in-jured in a motor vehicle acci-dent. A pile of sand caused anelectric truck to swerve, pin-ning the employee againstanother loaded truck. Result:Cuts and bruises on the rightleg.

At Burgess, an employeesuffered an injured back whensome pulp bales on a pile

tipped over on him. Anotheiaccident in the Dryer Build-ing resulted in a bad fractureof an employee's finger, wherhe caught his hand in a lay-boy.

At the Bermico Division, iworker was cut by a movingsaw while setting a gaugewhile at Cascade an employeeinjured his foot under a load-ing plate. At the Onco Planta worker broke a toe when iweight dropped on it.

A worker was badly burnecat the Heine Boiler Plamwhen he was struck by hoiashes and steam.

That's the line-up. It's nolpretty. No accidents are.

League was off to a flyingstart this month, and thebowlers were showing theyknew a thing or two about thegame.

Theriault TopsFor example, Dan Theriault

of the Towel Converting No. 2team picked off a 323 in threestrings in the opening matchagainst the Finishing club.

He started off with a red hot118, and then hit 117 in thesecond string. He slid to 88in the final, but who wouldn't.

He was not the only one tobreak the charmed 300 circlein the first match of theseason.

Walt Bolduc of Bermico No.3 marked up 312. He had 117,90 and 105. Albert Trahan ofResearch No. 1 hit an even300. He had 81, 121 and 98.His 121 was the top single ofthe first week.

Of course it was pretty earlyto spot the strong teams of theleague. But in the openingweek four teams came throughwith shut-out victories. Theywere Bermico No. 3, Cascade,Riverside No. 2 and ResearchNo. 1.

Bowlers were finding outthe handicap system was ahandy thing to have around.As it has proved in otherleagues, it was proving in theMill League to bring theteams nearer to par with eachother.

Of course there were theinstances where a team was"hot" at the start, bowlingabove its usual average. Thisput the team at a slight dis-advantage because it did notreceive as many handicappoints as it ordinarily would.But such a situation shouldiron itself out during the com-ing weeks.

Probably many of you knowthat it is not too soon to startmaking those holiday candiesand cookies. They'll keep per-fectly fresh if you'll take timeto wrap them in waxed paperand store them in air-tightcontainers until you are readyto serve them.

that members of the MillBowling League would do wellto read again.

Because of the big interestshown in the league, men onthe 4-to-12 shift have beenrolling on0 their scheduledstrings in the afternoon.

That's fine. It's a good idea.So this is a reminder to

some who had not been doingso, that such a procedure isnow approved for the league.

However, it should be limit-ed to men working 4-to-12.

Another point regards ashift in schedules.

Because of circumstancesbeyond the league's control,all matches previously sched-uled for Wednesdays at 7 p.m.on Alleys 7 and 8 are now be-ing rolled Thursday evenings.This only applies to matchesat that time and on thosealleys. All other matches arebeing rolled as originallyscheduled.

That was the situation inthe Office Bowling Leagues asof November 7.

Biggest Lead In Div. ANearest thing to a walka-

way was in Division A of theMen's League. There the FirstLieutenants had a two-pointmargin over the second-placeTechnical Sergeants.

But in Division B and in theGirls' League they couldn'tcome any closer.

Mr. Morris said that the eii-5infers have advised him thatthe fly ash collector alreadyon order will eliminate, wheninstalled, about 26 per cent ofall the fly ash presently being-discharged into the air fromall the soft coal boilers at theHeine Plant. Delivery of thecollector has been promisedfor Mar. 1, 1950.

In the meantime all neces-sary engineering and prelim-inary work will be completedso that the collector can beinstalled promptly upon de-livery.

After installation, carefulstudies will be made of it.Work will then proceed witha further installation.

Once it was common prac-tice to "pass the hat" when aco-worker died. Even todaythere are cases where some-body's widow and childrenhave been left without moneyand "the boys" chip in to helpthem out. Passing the hat, atbest, is uncertain. Group LifeInsurance, on the other hand,never fails!

Are You A Joe Bermico ?

Joe Bermico had a lifting job to do ... so naturally he did itthe hard way. That look of anguish on Joe's face may not bebecause of just the struggle he's having. When he tries tostraighten up he may find there's a good pain in his back.When you bend over like that and try to lift with the musclesof your back, you are putting an extra burden on those muscles.But, of course, Joe wouldn't know that.
