CALENDAR TERM 4 PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
Last week Stage 3 participated in the Tristan Banck’s Writers workshop via Zoom and it was fabulous. Tristan’s talks are interactive and inter-cut with video, images, music, maps, anecdotes and quizzes, bringing reading and creativity to life. Thanks to Mrs Kerves for organising this wonderful experience for our Stage 3 students.
Congratulations to our Term 4 Student Representative Council:

I would also like to congratulate the Year 5 students who
nominated themselves for student prefect positions for 2021. I
had the pleasure of interviewing these students last week who
spoke about what leadership means to them, their strengths and
their willingness to contribute to the life of the school. It takes
courage to put yourself forward for a leadership position. I am so
proud of these students who handled this process with sensitivity
and maturity and ‘had a go’. You all know who you are, well
done!! These students will now write their speech and prepare
their poster for display at school.

World Teacher's Day is this Friday. Thank you to all of our wonderful teachers
for all you do in our school every day! You can find out more at

teachers-day
Earlier this year the school conducted a parent and carer survey about student reports and the teaching of languages
at Pagewood Public School. Whilst sixty per cent of survey respondents indicated they would like the school to
continue offering languages, others requested that different areas be taught by specialist teachers. Languages are
not part of the mandatory curriculum in NSW primary schools. In response to the question ‘Each year the school
chooses the lessons that are taught by specialist staff. Currently we offer Languages (which are not mandatory) and
Music. Which of the following would you prefer to see taught at PPS by specialist teachers?’ the response were as
follows:
• Languages 32%
• Music 14%
• Coding 30%
• Physical Education 14%
• Other 10%
A number of respondents indicated they would like to see other languages offered in addition to French and
Mandarin. There were comments made in regards to current language programs as well as parents indicating they
would like to see a focus on our mandatory key learning areas. Whilst coding was a popular choice, it is important
that all teachers develop their skills in teaching the newly implemented Digital Technologies syllabus which is why it
was not chosen. As a result, PPS will not be offering languages as part of our school day from 2021. Specialist
teachers will teach music, sport and library across the school in 2021. The school has approached a private provider,
LCF Languages who operate in a number of local public schools, to use school premises to offer language classes
before/after school. Languages available include French, Mandarin, German, Italian and Spanish. Information is
provided further in the newsletter. Classes run with a minimum of 5 students K-6 per language and the cost is $246
per term. Lessons would be taught for one hour from 8:10am-9:10am or
3:20pm-4:20pm. Days will be finalised in consultation with the families who
book.

Principal STEM Stage 2 students have been very busy learning all about algorithms this term. Last week, they used our code-able mice to learn how to communicate through a series of commands. A special thanks to Emily Norman for organising the purchase of these mice for our school through the Scholastic Book Club. Miss Grisanti

STATEMENT OF ACCOUNT
Your child’s Statement of Account for Term 4 were sent out earlier this term for each family. To pay your child’s
‘Statement of Account’, it is helpful to the school if parents and carers use the Parent Online Payment (POP) system.
This is to reduce the amount of cash being handled at school by students and staff. To pay by POP, please go to the
Pagewood Public School website at http://www.pagewood-p.schools.nsw.edu.au and select ‘Make a payment’.
Parents and carers are welcome to pay for two or more children in one payment. If you wish to pay by cash, please
send cash payments to your child’s teacher on Tuesdays.
SCHOOL SYSTEMS IN PLACE TO KEEP US SAFE
In accordance with advice from NSW Health, parents and carers are reminded NOT to send children to school if they
are unwell, even if they have the mildest flu-like symptoms. Schools will make arrangements for students who
present as unwell or have flu-like symptoms to be sent home.
NSW Health have requested that schools encourage anyone who is unwell or has even mild flu-like symptoms, to arrange to be tested through their local medical practitioner or one of the COVID-19 clinics.

Students and staff with flu like symptoms will need to provide a copy of a negative COVID-19 test result and be well
before being permitted to return to school. This must be emailed to the school email address at
[email protected] with the class noted before 9:00am on the day the student is returning to
school. Please do not send it to the teacher as Ms Mayhew must sight the message.

Intention to apply for Year 7 placement in a selective high school in 2022
Dear Parent/Carer
Selective high schools cater for academically gifted students with high potential who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic standard. Selective high schools help these students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability, and by using specialised teaching methods.
Applications for selective high school placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Selective High School Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 11 March 2021.
If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2022, you need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).
Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available in late September 2020 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7.
The application website opens at that link on 13 October 2020 and closes on 16 November 2020. You must apply before the closing date.
There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Team for assistance after 13 October 2020.
You must submit only ONE application for each student.
The tear-off slip below is not an application and the school cannot apply on your behalf.
Yours sincerely
Principal
