Dear TexTESOLers,
On behalf of the board of TexTESOL IV and our conference committee, welcome to Houston and the 2017 TexTESOL
State Conference. As we begin our days of learning, TexTESOL IV would like to express our sincere thoughts of hope
to colleagues and community members who were affected by Hurricane Harvey. We also extend our gratitude to
board members and educators who have selflessly continued their service despite significant personal losses from
the storm. In the spirit of Houston’s resilience, we hope that you will have an inspiring, informative, and memorable
experience in Houston and at our conference.
This year’s conference theme is “Many Voices, One Vision: Advocacy through Education.” Joining us today are
educators and advocates of English language learners from diverse backgrounds and educational programs.
Whether we represent elementary or secondary education, bilingual education, university programs, adult and
community education, or teacher preparation programs, our many voices are united here today in the vision of
advocating for our students through the work we do on a daily basis.
This conference would not be possible without the support of our sponsors. Please take the time to enjoy our
scheduled breaks to visit our exhibitors in the main foyer. These exhibitors share innovative resources, programs,
and information to support educational programs in meeting the needs of English language learners. Their voice is a
valuable contribution in our professional community.
We are especially honored to welcome our invited speakers: Keynote Speakers Dr. Stephen Krashen and John
Seidlitz, as well as Plenary Speakers Linda Grant and Carol Salva. Each of these speakers has demonstrated
advocacy through education by promoting practices that support and empower students. We are also proud to host
several Featured Speakers who are actively supporting our educational community, including Emily Francis,
Valentina Gonzalez, Alice Llanos and Amy Tate, Alice Savage and Colin Ward, and Dr. Stephen White.
Each region of Texas hosts a TexTESOL affiliate dedicated to serving educators and advocates of English language
learners. I encourage each conference attendee to become involved with your local affiliates, TexTESOL II, III, and
IV, and V.
I have been deeply grateful during my time as TexTESOL IV President to work with many outstanding
professionals in the field of ESL education. I hope that you will take advantage of this conference as an opportunity
to build new relationships with fellow advocates in education. During the conference, please join us in an ongoing
dialogue on Twitter at #TxTESOL2017.
The true strength of this conference is in the gathering of passionate professionals dedicated to educational equity
and appreciation for the immeasurable gifts of culturally diverse communities. When we connect with each other
through professional conferences and organizations, our united voices create synergy and strength to encourage and
empower fellow educators and the learners we serve. Today more than ever, our students need our many voices
united in advocacy as a powerful catalyst for positive change in our schools, communities, and nation.
Thank you for your dedication to the relentless support of English language learners. On behalf of TexTESOL IV, I
hope that you will leave this conference invigorated, informed, and inspired.

Pre-Conference Event: Advocacy Institute Thursday, November 2
(1:30-5:30 in Bellaire)
Organized by TESOL IV, the Advocacy Institute will feature Cesar Moreno Perez, the
Associate Director of the Human Rights and Community Relations Department at the American
Federation of Teachers. Featured panelists will include Ramiro Fonseca, Community
Engagement Manager, and Alpha Martinez, a two-time Academy for Teacher Excellence
Presidential Distinguished Scholar awardee. The Advocacy Institute format combines elements
of a traditional conference with in-depth, practical information about DACA (Deferred Action for
Childhood Arrivals).
Session Description:
Educators and institutions play a critical role in helping to create learning environments free
from racism, bullying, hate and the threat of deportation. Furthermore, immigration raids across
the country terrorize communities. Thus, we need to be ready to defend the rights of children and
their families. We can help to protect those with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
status and others on our campuses and in our communities from the threat of deportation. The
AFT and its partners across the country are on the front-lines fighting to keep families and
communities together. These sessions will offer two things. First, these sessions will invite
participants to engage in candid conversations about immigration, ICE raids, and the phaseout
of DACA. Next, the speakers will present educators, school support staff and community
partners with available tools and resources to help undocumented students fight back.
Educators, school support staff, and community partners will be empowered to fight against the
attacks, defend DACA, and help communities prepare for an Immigration and Customs
Enforcement (ICE) raid.
Who Should Attend?
This event is organized for teachers, leaders, administrators, and teacher trainers from
universities, K–12 systems, and private language schools.

Pre-Conference Event: Practitioner Workshop:
Design Your Own Materials
with a Content First Approach Thursday, November 2
(1:30-5:30 in Post Oak)
Why do so many teachers wish they could teach without a course book? Is it because the
materials have become too overwhelming? Too expensive? Too confining? Or is something
missing in the book that teachers want to explore? While there are many excellent course
materials available through traditional publishers, there will always be creative teachers who
want to strike out on their own in search of a more efficient way to meet the unique needs of
their learners. This workshop offers a content-first approach to materials development.
Itinerary
What can we do to as teachers to tailor instruction to meet the needs of today’s 21st-century
learners? In this workshop, participants examine model lessons, explore options and create
materials to enhance the classroom experience whether it is virtual or face to face.
Discussion: What does it mean to be an English language teacher in the digital age?
Exploration: Approaches and tools for materials design
Action: Developing a personalized module using a content first approach
Who Should Attend?
Led by TexTESOL Featured Speakers Alice Savage and Colin Ward, this workshop is aimed
at teachers and tutors who are interested in enhancing students’ experiences in their courses
through original materials design, whether it be supplementing an existing course book, writing
for online courses, participating in a learning community, or otherwise personalizing a
curriculum to better meet students’ needs.

Friday Plenary (in the Galleria Ballroom at 12:00 during lunch)
Plenary Speaker: Linda Grant Sponsored by National Geographic Learning
Linda Grant has pursued her interest in first and second language phonology for over forty
years. A former audiologist, she has taught ESL students at Georgia Tech, graduate students in
applied linguistics at Georgia State University, and international teaching assistants at Emory
University in Atlanta. The author of two pronunciation texts for students, Well Said 4/e and Well
Said Intro 2/e (National Geo Learning/Cengage) and the editor of the teacher resource volume,
Pronunciation Myths: Applying Second Language Research to the Classroom (University of
Michigan Press), Linda currently writes and conducts pronunciation workshops to help teachers
implement research-informed best practices in their classrooms.
Pronunciation: The Missing Link in Speaking and Listening
The growing body of pronunciation research informing classroom teaching attests to the revival
of interest in pronunciation. Yet pronunciation remains the “missing link” in many ESL
programs, especially in courses dedicated to developing listening and speaking skills. In this
presentation, we will explore the natural connections between pronunciation and listening. We
will also identify a small number of research-based teaching points that play a critical role in
spoken communication. Finally, we will look at ways to integrate these key pronunciation
features seamlessly into our courses, whether they are pronunciation-dedicated or multi-skill
classes.

Polyglots and the Comprehension Hypothesis
There are remarkable polyglots among us, people who speak ten
languages well, and even more. How did they do it? Most say that
polyglots are somehow gifted. My analysis disagrees, as do many
polyglots themselves. Polyglots know what to do to acquire languages
and what not to do, and dedicate a lot of time to language acquisition.

Compelling Reading and Problem-Solving: The Easy
Way (and the Only Way) to High Levels of Language,
Literacy, and Life Competence.
I propose two simple universals: the attainment of the most
advanced levels of language, literacy, knowledge, and
competence comes from two sources: reading and problem-
solving. Both the reading and the problems to be solved are
self-selected, both are limited to a fairly narrow domain, and
both are of intense interest: both are "compelling."
This hypothesis is supported by traditional empirical
evidence, as well as case histories of those who succeeded with
little or no schooling. In cases where schooling helped, it is
proposed that school promoted compelling reading and
problem-solving.
