In the 1830’s the Cherokee and other Native Americans were forced from their lands to government run reservations. Today the government still has the right to seize private land if it deems it necessary to help the people as a whole, for example structures impeding new highways. This process, called eminent domain, is accompanied by monetary compensation for the property loss but does not depend on the willingness of the owner to give up his or her property.
