Welcome to Winter in Florida, where the calm days are great for diving and the breezy days great for sailing! Not to mention how nice it can be out on the hook with cooler temperatures and dryer weather – my favorite time

of year. Our 52nd Summerset race went off with a few hitches, but from talking to the racers, folks had a

fun, and breezy, time! The big boats enjoyed the stronger winds on Saturday, but the drone taking pictures had a rough time in the rolling seas. Kudos to Allen Fiske, our Vice Commodore of Summerset, for putting it all together, James Gallagher, our Vice Commodore of Racing for running the races, and all of our many volunteers who helped to make it a fun weekend on the water! Coming up on our calendar is the Halloween Cruise, Oct. 27-29. So if you are planning on going, make sure to call South Seas directly for a slip. Decorate your boat and/or yourselves and have a spooky good time! The Fort Myers Boat Show is coming up Nov. 16-19, so volunteer with Paul Corzatt to represent CMCS, take a shift and get in to view the show free! In November, the Festival of the Islands race kicks off the month and the Thanksgiving Cruise to Peli-can Bay wraps it up. Make sure to register for both of these events early. If you are planning to have Thanksgiving dinner at Cabbage Key, make sure to get those reservations in! The Ladies Bridge Club has started back up after their summer hiatus, so look for those upcoming ac-tivities. Rose and Roseanne are working to get our

ladies some training on what to do during an emer-gency on our boats. Be sure to take advantage of the training coming up. Naples Sailing and Yacht Club will be having their 53rd Commodores Cup Oct. 28th and all of our CMCS racers are encouraged to race AND all our cruisers and land cruisers encouraged to attend the Sunday Awards Buffet Breakfast. $25 inclusive of tip for a Sunday buffet to behold, according to Jerry Watkins. If you would like more information, e-mail Jerry at: [email protected] Our own Glen Vetter has gotten our PayPal system working fabulously. What a convenient way to sign up for events and pay on-line. Thanks to Glen for all his hard work in ironing out the bugs involved. Make sure to renew your membership and sign up for whatever you want to participate in. It’s that time of year to nominate members for Officer positions for next year. Utilize the on-line nomina-tion form or contact Bob Duff directly for recommen-dations. If you would like to volunteer for a position, please do! Our Club is only as strong as we all make it, so get involved! Nominations are now being accepted for the Good Samaritan Award. If you’ve caught someone going out of their way, above & beyond, or generally doing something nice this year, write it up and submit it to me. Fair winds and following seas

Fort Myers Boat Show—Mark your calendars! Nov. 16-19 10-6pm

CMCS always has a booth. Our presence at the boat show gets our club in the eye of the boating community. We need club members to be in the booth.

Here’s how it works: One to four of our club members are present in the booth for a two-hour time slot to talk to show attendees. Slots fill up fast because this is really an easy gig! You get free admission to the boat show in ex-change for the really tough duty of having to talk to enthusiastic boaters about boating. How cool is that?

FORT MYERS BOAT SHOWFORT MYERS BOAT SHOW

Summerset 2017 is in the books. Hurricane Irma definitely had a big effect on us, but we perse-vered and had a great weekend. Thirty Boats and Crews from Punta Gorda to Naples man-aged to either escape the effects

of Irma or do some quick repairs and find crews willing and able to take off for a few days and come to Fort Myers Beach. We know what it takes and really appreciate everyone's effort! We had hoped that our

Regatta might be a welcome distraction after dealing with an ugly Hurricane and I believe we succeeded. Over one hundred skippers, crews and volunteers met on Friday Night for a great Skippers Meeting at Bonita Bills. Saturday found Spirited Buoy Racing in the Gulf of Mexico by San Carlos Light in some chal-lenging conditions that included some dancing rac-ing marks. Saturday Night included a very fun Cocktail Party with live music on the deck at the new Original Shrimp Dock highlighted by a visit from Pat Ricci, the artist from the Cape Coral Art League whose painting was used on the front of our Regatta T-Shirt. On Sunday, a Distance Race to Bonita Beach and back enabled all crews to enjoy a picture perfect day on the water. Sunday Night we wrapped things up with a very tasty Awards Dinner at the Dia-mond Head Resort on Ft Myers Beach. Over 48 Corporate Sponsors and 33 Shirt Sleeve Sponsors enabled us to generate a Profit of approxi-mately $8,000, which will be donated back to the Communities where it came from in the same per-centages as it came. These monies are destined to Scholarship Deserving Children who are interested in learning how to Sail and get more acquainted with the Sea.

We really appreciate the effort put in by all of the Volunteers who worked together to make this hap-pen, The Organizing Committee, the Race Commit-tee, Co-Chair Elise Missal, Steve Romaine, Bev & Bob Duff, Sandy & Jerry Canning, James & Amy Gallagher, Larry Jack, Ron Allen, Marla Parker and the Race Committee headed up by Joe Periard, Ned Christiansen, John Finnegan and over fifty others who contributed time and effort. It is a beautiful thing when a plan comes together.

Don’t forget spooky decora-tions for your boat and candy for the trick or treaters. South Seas may even declare a win-ner in the decorating contest.

They do a lovely turkey dinner with all the fixings. Please make your reservations with Susan for dinner at Cabbage Key per the restaurant’s request. Greetings all! As the temperatures are cooling down (at least in the mornings and evenings), that triggers the An-nual CMCS Membership Renewal season (as opposed to the leaves changing colors like it does up north).

So, just like prior years, please complete your renewal application by the November 30

th deadline to make sure

you’re included in the 2018 CMCS Yearbook! Again this year you can renew your CMCS member-

ship online and pay with your credit card or Paypal!

Online renewal will also streamline and simplify the entire renewal process from an administrative perspective for the CMCS volunteers (from data entry to handling the money). To complete the online renewal, please go to the main CMCS webpage ( www.cmcs-sail.org ) and find the link to the online renewal on the “starboard” panel of the page. Bev Duff,

Rear Commodore-Racing’s Report

I want to take a moment to thank the members of the club that helped make Summerset such a great event. Fundamen-tally the event centers around two days of racing, but the real mission is to promote and help youth sailing, an absolutely worthwhile effort. It’s great to see club members and spon-sors who have little to do with the race program put there all into more than 50 years of Summerset tradition.

We had 18 boats signed up and participating in the full race program with three buoy races on Saturday, and a distance race on Sunday. There were another 7 boats that competed for the prestigious Lou Tilley Atochia trophy for the “legends” cruiser race on Sun-day. The weather was fantastic even though we were all nervously watching Hurricane Nate make its way up the gulf. I think that the recent memory and damage caused by Hurricane Irma certainly reduced the sailor participation for this year.

I want to take a moment to apologize and commiser-ate with the sailors who got to witness a race course that was changing as we were racing. Background: we set the marks with anchors, the same anchors that we used in years past, but the wind was strong and the current even stronger. And the marks kept moving! Eventually the race committee got things sorted and races two and three were perfect! But it sure was fun watching the boats scrambling around chasing moving race marks!

I want to thank the boats that came up from Naples and down from Punta Gorda. We are going to con-tinue to reach out to these clubs to get a program that is more closely aligned and leverages each other’s races.

The results for the Summerset Race are posted online at …. http://www.summersetregatta.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/171008-Final-Results.pdf The next Boat of the Year Race sponsored by our club will be the Festival of the Islands race on No-vember 11. NOTE: This is a change to the date published on the old CMCS 2017 Calendar.

And now for some exciting news. On December 9, there will be a change to the race format. This will

CMCS ELECTION PROCEDURES

It’s that time of year when we start preparing to turn over leadership of CMCS to a new team. The process has actually been going on all year long by the Club Development Committee (CDC). Our process also includes seeking nominations from the general membership. If you have been thinking about getting involved or you know someone who would be a great addition to the leadership team now is the time to act. A nomination form is being published in this issue of the Chowder Chatter. Any member of CMCS in good stand-ing is eligible to serve as long as there is no conflict of interest. If you are nominating someone we do ask that you also have that person sign and date the form. We want to make sure that people do want to serve. Directors are elected to serve two years. Flag Officers serve for one year. These are the positions we will elect::

Commodore

Vice Commodore

Vice Commodore-Summerset

Rear Commodore-Cruising

Rear Commodore-Racing

Fleet Yeoman

Fleet Purser

4—two-year Directors

Nominations should be submitted no later than November 1. The Club Development Committee has been work-ing to develop a new team throughout the year. The CDC will present its slate of officers and directors at the No-vember meeting of the Board of Directors. At the December meeting if there are individuals nominated in addition to the CDC recommended candidates, voting will be done by paper ballot. If there are no contested positions, voting will be done by majority vote with a show of hands. Nominations may also be made from the floor at the December meeting before the vote takes place. Each membership has one vote. A Credentials Committee consisting of two CMCS members will be appointed to conduct the election.

NEW YEARS EVE PARTY CRUISE Fisherman’s Village-Punta Gorda

December 28, 2016-January 1, 2017

This cruise is unstructured. Most people work their way up to Pelican Bay on the 28th. Arrive when you can. The cruise is a destination cruise, so only New Year’s Eve counts for the cruising award. Pelican Bay is a good anchorage and most boats can tuck in if there’s a norther…or go around to School-house Bay (aka hurricane hole). Cayo Costa State Park is a great place to meander around. Please remember that there is a $2/day/person shore fee payable at the honor box or you can pay at the office if you don’t have change. As is our recent custom, we are spending New Year’s Eve at Fisherman’s Village. We have free use of the boaters lounge from 4-12 or later. Bring snacks for snack hour and a dish to share for Pot Luck. Remember to bring your eating utensils, plates, etc. This is a true pot luck. Snack hour generally runs into the Pot Luck Dinner. We begin snacking around 5:00 PM. Serious food comes after that. There is no time frame for drinking! Please remember to bring more than enough food in your dish for your party. Quite frankly it isn’t fair to others to have 6 guests and bring food for 2. All are welcome and it’s an easy drive up there for the Land Cruisers. There is no charge for the Land Cruisers but they are expected to bring a snack and Pot Luck and their own eating utensils. The Marina will have a band, snacks, and beer/wine. All are welcome to enjoy the music. There is a very reasonable charge for the food and beverages for marina guests. This year plans are for fire-works. To quote marina personnel “it should be quite the shindig!” All slips are currently reserved and the marina sold out. Because of hurricane damage, only the boats who already have reservations can get in. There is no waiting list. Any cancellations will not be filled. Following are boats who made reservations last January and will have slips. Tyrolia, Samphire, Ariel, Gopher Baroque, Lazy Susan, Bare Feet, Chase the Clouds, Sol Adventure, and Bridget O’Toole. You can also anchor out if you’d like and use the dinghy dock for a nominal charge If you have any questions call Carolyn Wilson, (239)699-8749 or [email protected].
