What do you do if you have atoothache? It is just amazing to mewhat we have seen patients do fortheir own toothaches in all my yearsof dental practice. Let’s start rightfrom the beginning.

The first thing that you shoulddo if you have a toothache is callyour dentist and make anappointment to see them as soon aspossible. I cannot tell you thenumber of times patients havewaited, and waited, and waited to see if the toothache willgo away before they call the office. What usually happensat that point is that the toothache is so bad that they nowhave an emergency, usually at a inconvenient time, likemidnight or a Saturday afternoon, when it will be prettydifficult to find a dental office open. So rule number one isdo not ignore any pain that you have in your mouth. Theseare usually warning signs that there is something wrongand it is only going to get worse, not better.

The second thing you should do if you have a toothacheis take some Tylenol or ibuprofen, such as Advil or Motrin.Aspirin and ibuprofen work a little better if the nerve ofthe tooth is inflamed, only because these medications alsoact as anti-inflammatory agents. There is really is no reasonto have to live with the pain of a toothache with theseexcellent pain relievers around. Many people call the officeand we ask them if they have taken anything for their painand they say, “No”, and we can’t figure out why. The onething you should not do with an aspirin tablet is place itdirectly on the tooth or gum. This is an old wives’ tale andusually what happens is that the acid in the aspirin tabletwill cause a chemical burn on the gum tissue, which willonly complicate the situation and make the pain worse, notbetter.

Generally, if you have a toothache and your tooth orteeth are sensitive to hot and cold stimulation, this verywell can be a tooth problem instead of a gum problem. Adull, throbbing ache around the neck of the tooth may verywell be a gum problem. Swelling in your mouth can comefrom either teeth or gums and usually denotes a very activeinfection going on. For any kind of swelling, you need tocontact your dentist immediately.

If you have a broken tooth, you should rinse your mouthwith warm water to clean the area. Use some dental floss

Toothache Troubles.... by Dr. Louis Malcmacher of The Healthy Smile

or a toothpick to gentlyremove any food that maybe in or around the toothand again call for anappointment as soon aspossible.

What do you do if youor your child has bitten yourlip or your tongue do to anaccident of any kind? Cleanthe area with a cloth andapply cold compresses toreduce any swelling. If thebleeding doesn’t stop youwill need to go to a hospitalemergency room immed-iately and may need somestitches. If you don’t haveany dental pain, go see adentist as soon as possible.Don’t let it get to a point

where the pain is souncomfortable, because thepain then becomes harder tocontrol and more difficult totreat.

If you have anyquestions or concerns aboutyour teeth, please feel freeto contact our office. Wealso have 24 hour pagingservice available and wewill return your call as soonas possible to address anydental needs that you haveor any emergencies that mayarise. For a freeconsultation, please call ouroffice at 440-892-1810. Asalways, our goal is to helpyou develop and maintain ahealthy smile.

Memorial Day is a time to remember all who gave their lives forour nation and our freedom.
