BISMARCK -- RanjuDhungana was born in a refugeecamp in Nepal. She spent herchildhood playing outside andbeing satisfied with the simplethings in life. It wasn’t until herfamily came to North Dakota in2009 that she realized havingaccess to clean water, electricityand medical care could beexpected, not a luxury. Dhungana said adapting to theAmerican way of life was one ofher biggest challenges when shecame to Grand Forks. As an 11-year-old, she was bombarded withnew rules and norms: You have tofollow traffic lights. You can’t holdhands with someone unless youare dating. Canned food is a thingand there is a ridiculous amount ofit at Walmart. While learning the ins and outsof this new culture, Dhungana wasalso challenged with keeping herown alive. “I grew up being surroundedby individuals who spoke Nepaliand had a similar culture to me, soI had a difficult timecommunicating with others,”Dhungana said. “Adapting wasvery challenging while also tryingto preserve my own culture. I hadto go from being a Nepali girl onthe inside to an American on theoutside.” International refugees arevetted by the U.S. StateDepartment before they arebrought to the United States andturned over to Lutheran SocialServices and other charitableorganizations, which provideinitial help with resettlement instates that have agreed to receivethem. Dhungana knew very littleEnglish before resettling. She saidlearning the language wasn’t thatbad since she could study usingbooks, television and music. Shesaid it also helped that her teacherswere patient and understanding. “I remember getting bookslike ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ and Iwould isolate myself from peopleand force myself to try to read thewords,” Dhungana said. Now, she is getting ready tograduate from the University ofNorth Dakota with a psychologydegree with a pre-health focus.The honors student is applying to

medical schools this year. Whileshe doesn’t have a specialization inmind, she has known for a longtime that she wants to help otherswho are suffering. Dhungana’s father died from alack of anti-venom when he wasbitten by a snake. She was only 6years old. She said this loss hasmotivated her to pursue a medicalcareer. “After losing my dad, seeingthe lack of medicine and seeingindividuals die from preventablediseases, I knew that I wanted togo into the medical field,” shesaid. Dhungana said she wasdisappointed to see that LutheranSocial Services-North Dakota hadto close down and worries thatnew refugees will not have accessto the same resources that she had. “I was really sad becauseLutheran Social Services hashelped hundreds of people toresettle here and make theirtransition a little easier,”Dhungana said. She hopes that the Departmentof Human Services will do theirbest to keep the program going. While her community hasbeen very accepting and treats herfamily well, Dhungana said shestill sees racism and hate towardrefugees on social media. She saidthat people forget refugees arehumans who had to abandon theirhomes. “Here’s the thing, no onereally wants to leave theirhomeland and be resettled in aforeign place without knowing thelanguage and social norms,”Dhungana said. “The majority ofrefugees have been forced fromtheir homes or are escaping warand persecution.” Dhungana’s parents had to fleefrom Bhutan due to ethniccleansing. She said they had tobuild their own hut in the refugeecamp, where they lived for almosttwo decades. Dhungana wishes more peoplein North Dakota would beempathetic and open to those thatneed help. “Back in Bhutan, they hadtheir land, money, their home,everything. But they had to leaveall of that,” Dhungana said. “Ithink people don’t understand thatno one is choosing to leave theirhomeland.”
