February 2020 - BSBAC Buzz Page 1
Heart disease, and the conditions that lead to it, can happen at any age. High rates of obesity and high blood pressure among younger people (ages 35-64) are putting them at risk for heart disease earlier in life. Half of all Americans have at least one of the top three risk factors for heart disease: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking.
Other conditions and behaviors that affect your risk for heart disease include: obesity, diabetes, physical inactivity, and unhealthy eating patterns.
4 Ways to Take Control of Your Heart HealthYou’re in the driver’s seat when it comes to your heart. Learn how to be heart healthy at any age.1. Don’t smoke.2. Manage conditions.3. Make heart-healthy eating
changes. Eat food low in trans-fat, saturated fat, added sugar and sodium.
4. Stay active.

By Jessica Rosario
As you probably know, February is recognized as American Heart Month. Although we typically associate it with cardiovascular conditions and diseases, there are other ways to interpret “Heart Month”. For example, during National Random Acts of Kindness Week (February 17-23), we focus on the importance of being kind to one another, and having a giving heart.
One of the most recognizable days, Valentine’s Day, is, in my opinion, a much too commercialized event. However, when you look beyond the millions of pounds of chocolate, thousands of teddy bears, and the fields of roses, I hope you will find that the items were given out of love and kindness, not because of “necessity”.
Furthermore, in February we are reminded that “sharing the love” can have a significantly deeper meaning than giving compliments or doing good deeds; it can save someone’s life!
Coinciding with Valentine’s Day, February 14 is also National Donor Day. Donating an organ is, in my view, one of the kindest and most
selfless acts you can do, right up there with First Responders, Military Personnel and other individuals putting themselves in harm’s way to help another.
You really do not have to look very far to experience giving hearts and random acts of kindness at our Center! As you participate in the many activities and events we have planned for this month, please take a moment to thank the many volunteers who, in 2019, put in more than 9,000 hours and drove over 39,000 miles to help us continue our mission of enhancing the quality of life for older adults in our communities. Because, when you really think about it, chocolate may only make you happy while the taste is still in your month, but the amazing feeling of helping someone else can last a lifetime. I leave you with one of my absolute favorite quotes: “Only by giving are you able to receive more than you already have.” (Jim Rohn)
Wishing you a happy and healthy February!
Sincerely, Jessica RosarioExecutive Director

1. Which would be worth more -- a trunk full of nickels or a half a trunk full of dimes?2. If the Vice President of the United States should die, who would be President?3. How many times can you subtract 2 from 21 without getting a negative number for an answer?
SOLUTIONS: 1. Half a trunk full of dimes. Dimes are worth twice as much, so half the number of dimes as nickels would be worth the same amount. But since dimes are smaller than nickels, more dimes than nickels can fit in the same amount of space. 2. The current President, still in office. Half are boys, and so is the other half. 3. Any number of times. 21 minus 2 is 19, every single time.
