Step by step. Dresden climbed another spot in the latest Associated Press Class 1A prep foot- ball state rankings this week, moving up to No. 7. Dresden improved to 6-2 on the season with a fourth- quarter 31-28 comeback win over Weakley County and District 13A rival Gleason on Friday night. The Lions have moved up one spot in the polls each of the last two weeks. Dresden will be off this week and then close the regular season with a 13A showdown against Huntingdon, ranked in 2A, at Rotary Field. The 1A rankings had plenty of changes with Union City’s win over previously unbeaten No. 1 Humboldt causing the big- gest shake-up. In addition to the Lions moving up one spot, South Pittsburg jumped from No. 2 to the top spot, Cloudland bumped up a spot from third to second, Union City moved up two spots to No. 3 from No. 5, Humboldt fell to No. 4, Nashville Christian dropped a spot to No. 5, Coalfield moved up one place to No. 6, Columbia Academy went up a spot to No. 9 and Greenback dropped down three spots to No. 9. Only Wayne County stood pat, remaining 10th. Class 1A was the only place where the No. 1 rank- ing changed hands. Maryville held firm in Class 6A, as did Henry County in 5A, Knoxville Fulton in 4A, CPA in 3A, Grace Christian in 2A and Ensworth in Division II. Rural West Tennessee teams continue to fill in spots throughout the poll, led by four teams in dou- ble-A. Trinity Christian of Jackson is ranked third, followed by Trenton at No. 6, Adamsville at No. 7 and Huntingdon at No. 9. The Cardinals and Mustangs each moved up one spot as Oneida fell from seventh to 10th. There will be more changes in the two small- school polls after this week- end as Union City travels to Trenton for a game that will decide the District 14A champion. Dyersburg followed up its 41-3 drubbing of Milan by staying put at No. 5 in the Class 4A poll. Local games Friday have Westview hosting McKenzie, Scotts Hill at Gleason and Greenfield at Gibson County. 1A shake-up includes move up for Lions THE WEAKLEY COUNTY PRESS PAGE 12 TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2013 AP FOOTBALL PREP POLLS AP PREP RANKINGS Westview ... COLTER SWAFFORD — DRESDEN TYLER LANGLEY — WESTVIEW ing the season at 7-3, and not letting this emotional game get us down, and use it as a positive because it is something we have not done this year.” Legens has been the heart and soul of the Bulldogs lately which Lampkins has been expecting out of his junior quarterback. “He played with a lot of heart and kind of did some things we have been waiting on him to do against the good teams,” Lampkins said. “He showed up tonight and made some good plays.” Gleason will have Scotts Hill on Friday to wrap up the home portion of its schedule. It will also be Senior Night with 11 seniors being honored in pregame ceremonies. The Bulldogs will end the reg- ular season at Bruceton in another big district game for both teams. Chargers then had: Two stops. The Rebels followed the Westview score with an 11-play drive of their own, moving a close as the 3-yard-line, but they were stopped two yards short on fourth down. Getting the ball back via punt, OC had a reverse pass by Camden Napper to Matt Rasberry knocked down at the goal line by Westview’s J’von Cavitt. That same Charger then picked off a Jones pass on the next play to basically end the half. “I was glad that, for most of the night, we played good short-yardage defense on our own end of the field,” Coady said. “With as many chances as we gave them, to hold them to just two scores is probably a pretty good job.” The Rebels pulled within 20-16 on a six-yard run by Jones and another conver- sion from Warner at 5:15 of the third and then recov- ered an onside kick. What followed in the ensuing drive, though, was: The other penalty. At the Chargers’ 39, OC was whistled for a holding penalty two yards behind the line, turning 1st-and-10 into 1st-and-22. The Rebels punted three plays later. And, finally, OC’s failed fourth down led to Westview’s finishing drive. The Rebels got the ball back on a punt and moved to their own 48, looking at a 4th-and-2. Jones was stopped for no gain on the first play of the fourth quar- ter, and the Chargers used that to take momentum for good and pull away over the final 12 minutes. It began with a nine-play, 48-yard scoring drive that ended with Langley’s sec- ond TD for a 27-16 lead. “It was close at that point, and we’d kind of swapped back and forth in the third quarter,” Coady said. “We needed to pull away, and that was the drive that allowed us to do it.” Bradshaw, good on four point-after kicks, connect- ed on a 22-yard field goal at 3:33, and the Chargers’ final score came on a 58- yard interception return by Hunter Beal with 1:35 to play. OC actually outgained the Chargers in total yards 273-248, but the Rebels were guilty of four turn- overs while Westview never gave away possession. Brown led all ball-car- riers with 111 yards on 13 carries, and Langley had the game’s longest play from scrimmage with a 51- yard run to set up the field goal. Pence scored once for the ’Jackets. John David Ricketts also added a touch- down when he scored on a quarterback sneak. Ricketts is starting to show some maturity as Greenfield’s quarterback. He faced several blitzes from the Falcons and kept himself composed. “They were blitzing us heavy and he had somebody on him all night,” Pitt said. “He just does a good job of scrambling and keeping his eyes downfield. A lot of his completions are after a scramble and finding a receiver. He played really good ballgame.” Pitt had to bench Pence for the first half of the game for missing some practices. The benching seemed to light a fire in Pence because he came out in the second half and played one of his better games of the season. “We had fall break ear- lier in the week and Austin went to Florida,” Pitt said. “So I had to bench him early in the game. He came out with a lot of emotion and he ran the ball like he has not all year. So, hope- fully, he will finish the sea- son like that, and finish off his senior year like I know he can run the ball.” Jeffery Johnson also had some disciplinary actions taken against him by the game officials. Johnson got flagged twice for unsports- man-like penalties and was ejected from the game. “The refs were rough on us,” Pitt said. “They threw him out for a few choice words. But he had some big receptions for us. I try to stay on him about that, but he just has a bad mouth on him. Jeffery has to sit out our next game, so we are going to finish out the season with John David at quarterback and let Jeffery play at receiver the last game.” Johnson started the game at quarterback and com- pleted a 45-yard pass to Ricketts on a trick play the first play of the game. Greenfield is at Gibson County on Friday and will finish up the season at home against South Fulton the following Friday. Pitt’s main goal now is to not fin- ish the season at the bottom of the district. “I feel pretty good about these next two weeks,” Pitt said. “We want to get off the bottom of the list. We do not want to finish last.” STANDINGS/ SCHEDULE DISTRICT 14A Dist. All Trenton (2A) 5-0 7-1 Union City (1A) 5-0 7-1 Humboldt (1A) 4-1 7-1 Halls (2A) 3-2 5-3 Lake Co. (1A) 2-3 3-5 Gibson Co. COLTER SWAFFORD — DRESDEN TYLER LANGLEY — WESTVIEW

ing the season at 7-3, and not letting this emotional game get us down, and use it as a positive because it is something we have not done this year.”

Legens has been the heart and soul of the Bulldogs lately which Lampkins has been expecting out of his junior quarterback.

“He played with a lot of heart and kind of did some things we have been waiting on him to do against the good teams,” Lampkins said. “He showed up tonight and made some good plays.”

Gleason will have Scotts Hill on Friday to wrap up the home portion of its schedule. It will also be Senior Night with 11 seniors being honored in pregame ceremonies. The Bulldogs will end the reg-ular season at Bruceton in another big district game for both teams.

“With as many chances as we gave them, to hold them to just two scores is probably a pretty good job.”

The Rebels pulled within 20-16 on a six-yard run by Jones and another conver-sion from Warner at 5:15 of the third and then recov-ered an onside kick.

What followed in the ensuing drive, though, was: The other penalty.

At the Chargers’ 39, OC was whistled for a holding penalty two yards behind the line, turning 1st-and-10 into 1st-and-22. The Rebels

punted three plays later. And, finally, OC’s

failed fourth down led to Westview’s finishing drive.

The Rebels got the ball back on a punt and moved to their own 48, looking at a 4th-and-2. Jones was stopped for no gain on the first play of the fourth quar-ter, and the Chargers used that to take momentum for good and pull away over the final 12 minutes.

It began with a nine-play, 48-yard scoring drive that ended with Langley’s sec-ond TD for a 27-16 lead.

“It was close at that point, and we’d kind of swapped back and forth in the third quarter,” Coady said. “We needed to pull away, and

that was the drive that allowed us to do it.”

Bradshaw, good on four point-after kicks, connect-ed on a 22-yard field goal at 3:33, and the Chargers’ final score came on a 58-yard interception return by Hunter Beal with 1:35 to play.

OC actually outgained the Chargers in total yards 273-248, but the Rebels were guilty of four turn-overs while Westview never gave away possession.

Brown led all ball-car-riers with 111 yards on 13 carries, and Langley had the game’s longest play from scrimmage with a 51-yard run to set up the field goal.

Pence scored once for the ’Jackets. John David Ricketts also added a touch-down when he scored on a quarterback sneak.

A lot

of his completions are after a scramble and finding a receiver. He played really good ballgame.”

Pitt had to bench Pence for the first half of the game for missing some practices. The benching seemed to light a fire in Pence because he came out in the second half and played one of his better games of the season.

“We had fall break ear-lier in the week and Austin went to Florida,” Pitt said. “So I had to bench him early in the game. He came out with a lot of emotion and he ran the ball like he has not all year. So, hope-fully, he will finish the sea-

son like that, and finish off his senior year like I know he can run the ball.”

Jeffery Johnson also had some disciplinary actions taken against him by the game officials. Johnson got flagged twice for unsports-man-like penalties and was ejected from the game.

“The refs were rough on us,” Pitt said. “They threw him out for a few choice words. But he had some big receptions for us. I try to stay on him about that, but he just has a bad mouth on him. Jeffery has to sit out our next game, so we are going to finish out the season with John David at

quarterback and let Jeffery play at receiver the last game.”

Johnson started the game at quarterback and com-pleted a 45-yard pass to Ricketts on a trick play the first play of the game.

Greenfield is at Gibson County on Friday and will finish up the season at home against South Fulton the following Friday. Pitt’s main goal now is to not fin-ish the season at the bottom of the district.

“I feel pretty good about these next two weeks,” Pitt said. “We want to get off the bottom of the list. We do not want to finish last.”
