The Spirit Drove Jesus Out Into The Desert
When Jesus came out of the desert, after His strug-gle with the Devil, He could not go back to the work-shop of Joseph and continue to worship in His local synagogue of Nazareth like everyone else. The 40 days spent in the desert made Jesus aware that he was to confront and change the order of society, instead of finding a place for himself in this society. His priority became the preaching of God’s King-dom: a radical change “that overthrow the powerful from their thrones and exalt the humble”.
Today’s Gospel challenges our Catholic community who through hard work, have made their way up the social scale. We American Catholics generously benefit from our market economy. The violent re-cent happenings at Parkland and the exclusion of so many people that cannot make their way up the so-cial ladder reveal the deep contradiction of our pre-sent system. Pope Francis describes it as a “savage capitalism” that worships the only God of our time: money. Corporate and individual profit is the only moral criteria of our economy.
If we want to follow the example of Jesus our Catho-lic faith has to lead us to confront and fight the great powers who dominate our world. Like Jesus, we all need to give a prophetic witness of God’s Kingdom. Our God is a loving father who defends the poor and the weak, who “takes sides for the orphan, the widow and the stranger”. (Deu. 10:18)
