President’s Message

Greetings Quilters!

This month’s message will be very short, as I am vacationing “up north” and have to travel to the library to use their computer! Our cottage does not have WIFI, telephone or television, so we are enjoying being without modern technology for a while. Luckily it is available just a short distance away.

LIBRARY LETTERS Ellen Simon

We are into surface design books this month for the new additions to the library col-lection. I have three books by Shelly Stokes of Cedar Canyon Textiles. Book one is titled Paintstiks on Fabric which shows you how to use Paintstiks with rubbing plates, masks and stencils. For those of you who have never tried Paintstiks, they are oil paint in a crayon form. They are easy to use on fabric and can create some really nice effects. Design Magic, the second book, takes the process a step further by exploring the Japa-nese design principle of Notan. The third book, Rubbing Plate Roundup, explores the use of Paintstiks with other techniques like discharge dying and Gelli Plate Printing. No big projects here, just small experiments. Next are two books by Lynn Krawczyk, Intentional Printing, and The Hand-Stitched Sur-face. The first book has about a dozen printing techniques and a section at the end showing small projects in which to use the newly printed fabric. The Hand-Stitched Surface features pro-ject techniques similar to Laura Wasilowski and Sue Spargo. Check this book out if you are looking for something to do on that next long airplane ride. Daily Beauty: 365 Ways to Play with Everyday Quilt Embellishments explores a year’s worth of techniques to change the appear-ance of a simple circle on a simple square using your sewing machine. I found some very crea-tive ideas that might come in handy one day.

One more book is on its way, Play of Color Quilting. It should be available at the next meeting but won't be reviewed until August. Ellen (941) 723-8727 or [email protected]

KiDZQuilts Jo Wieczynski, Coordinator

At our June meeting attended by 9 gals we donated 32 baby quilts to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. This brings our 2018 total to 233 quilts. Congratula-tions to every gal who made a KiDZQuilt.

Our fabric supply is at a low point so we would very much appreciate your contributions.

Our next meeting is at the Fruitville Library on Monday, July 23 from noon to 3:30 p.m.

For KiDZQuilt Guidelines, please email Jo Wieczynski at [email protected].

Fidget Quilts

Fidget Quilts – What Should I Bring for the August meeting workshop? Sewing machine, extension cords, quilting foot for minimal quilting, thread, scissors, pins, etc. Fabric: Any sturdy fabric can be used – upholstery, denim, corduroy, fleece, minky scraps, any orphan blocks you might have lying around, fabric that has gone out of style, etc. Approximately 20” x 20” base fabric for the top – can be one solid piece or pieced. Slightly larger piece of fabric for backing Trims of all kinds that are sturdy and can be fastened securely to the quilt top – washable items are best:

Cording, ribbon, rick-rack, lace, netting, etc.- anything that can be “couched” or sewn in place to accent the top. Velcro strips to be zipped open and closed are good.

Be careful attaching anything that might come loose and become a choking hazard. Any buttons or beads may be fastened by hand using a needle threaded with dental floss. A good supply of trims, zippers and fabrics as well as batting will be provided at the meeting for your use in making the Fidget Quilts. A number of pieced tops will also be available to give you a “head start”.

Please join us for the 2018 FKQG Summer Quilt Retreat. You will have 4 full days of retreat time, starting at 10 a.m. on Thursday until 4 p.m. on Sunday to sew (finish UFOs or start some-thing new), eat (no cooking, no kids and no dishes!) and relax (no husbands or housework)! For overnight retreaters, all meals are included starting with lunch on Thursday through lunch on Sunday. Lunch is included for Day-stitchers, and you have the choice of joining us for 3 din-ners for an additional $45. There will be no scheduled classes, but we will have a few games, door prizes, and of course, choco-

late! We are again “Sew Lucky” with Day Spring Episcopal Conference Center, located in Ellenton, FL (941-776-1018). The center is just north of the Manatee River, www.dayspring.dioswfl.org. The Center is surrounded by beautiful, lush, wooded grounds, quiet and serene, but only the grounds are quiet, not us! In our workroom and cabins we have a great time! Ask anyone who has been before – we have “sew much” fun! Wine is permitted in your cabins. Dress is casual. Enjoy a private room, share a room with a quilting buddy, or be a day-stitcher.

If you have additional questions please contact Linda Kirby at [email protected], or Kathy Dotson at [email protected], 941-266-0877.

Tuesday, November 20 “Face Forward”

Instructor will bring samples of her freestyle por-trait work and discuss and demonstrate her pro-cesses. Students will layout a background and a portrait, using (and sharing) recycled fabrics. Critique and discussion of facial features, propor-tions, and light and shadow will follow. Finally, students will be shown the ladder stitch for appli-queing the shapes to the batting with embroidery thread.

Update on July 14th Bus Trip to Stitchers Paradise

We have to make a change to the bus trip. Fabric Smart is not going to be able to host the bus on Saturday morning due to an extended illness that causes an employee they were counting on to be unavailable. That means that the bus will come directly to Stitcher Paradise. People who ride the bus will now have plenty of time to take in a workshop or presentation as well as shop in the Marketplace. Some of the Saturday classes have filled, but two options that fit into the time frame when the bus group is at Stitcher Paradise and that have not filled are: Presentation: 11am - 12:30pm Tales of a Traveling Teacher with Linda Hahn $15 Linda takes you behind the scenes for a look at many areas of the quilting industry. How did your favorite quilt book ever get printed? When does a shop owner ever get to sew? How did the teach-er prep for class and why does she always look so fabulous? Who thinks up all those great designs & notions? Count on Linda’s anecdotes and tips for an entertaining peek as she shows samples of her quilts. Workshop: 12:30pm to 3:30pm ~ $45 + $49 Kit Thread Punk with Stephanie Brandenburg. Take a step beyond Thread Play, add the textures and embellishments and voila, you have Thread Punk. Thread PUNK touches on free motion, but the focus is on adding sheers, trapping threads under the surface, and giving dimension. This concept is a great addition to your art quilting explora-tions. It is perfect for those who have done a little art quilting on their own. Take your thread painting to the next level! Information on Tales of a Traveling Teacher and Thread Punk and registration are available at www.stitcherparadise.com

There will be a concession area near the Mar-ketplace for sandwiches and goodies, and dining is also available at the Luna restaurant at the Hilton.

Shelter Bed Buddy Workshop

Jane Sanks

We had 2 meetings in June and completed 94 beds. This brings our year to date total to 566. Please join us at one of our workshops. We cannot make enough beds to meet demand. I have more requests for beds this month than beds to share. A good problem for us to have as we know our beds are making shelters and people fostering pets happy, not to mention the animals themselves. Future workshop dates are: July 20 August 24 September 21 October 19 Workshop dates are usually the Friday of the week we have our Guild meetings. You may always call me to make certain of the date. We would love to have you join us. We meet from 1 to 3 pm at the American Red Cross facility on the north end of Cantu Court in Sarasota. You may call me for more information: Jane Sanks (941) 923-4240 or (941) 726-2849. If you prefer, you could also send an email to [email protected].

PROGRAM NOTES

Ellen Simon

The July program will feature Mike Flynn, the Florida sales rep for Quilting Treasures fabric. His presentation on the Making of Fabric is really interesting and in-spired a lot of questions from the audience when I saw him last year. The short bolt sale is being handled by Karen Donnelly of Fabric Smart in Gulf-port. Please note that the sale will take place after the presentation. Payment is by check or credit card only: NO CASH. A short bolt is usually between 3 and 7 yards of fabric and will be priced at $7 a yard. Check your stock of quilt tops (we all have them) to see what backings you might need. This is a great opportunity to buy some backings. I was really pleased at the success of the June program, the SAQA trunk show. It seemed like everyone at the tables was really engaged in the discussions. I hope it gave members an opportunity to meet and talk with other members they may not have met before. To those non-art quilters out there, thanks for taking the leap and thanks to those SAQA members who came to facilitate the discussions. Looking ahead to August, check out the supply list for the Fidget Quilts. If you won't have time to make a top before the August meeting, never fear; I will be supply-ing about 10 tops for members to work on.

2019 Quilt Show News Cass Bowen, Show Chair

For all the new members of our Guild, this is the information page for our next Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild Show that will be held March 8-9, 2019. Each month we have updates on the various projects or aspects of the show. We encourage new members to get involved by making quilts to enter in the show, volunteer for any of the numerous committees, sign-up to do a gift basket for the basket auction, make a set of blocks for block auction or make a small quilt for the mini-quilt auction. Feel free to contact me at any time for more information. My phone number is (941)320-8840 and e-mail is [email protected]. Please visit the 2019 Quilt Show Page on the Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild website. The new website can be accessed at www.friendshipknotquilters.com. There you will find information on: Committee Chairs. Rules, regulations and definitions for the show. Quidelines for the Block Auction, Mini-Quilt Auction, and Challenge Quilt. Information on the Do-nor Quilt with contact information for tickets. Quilt Show Vendors. Quilt Show Judge. Block Auction Update Ten block sets have been turned into the committee. Linda Starkey turned in the latest set of blocks in red, white and black which are going to make an absolutely stunning quilt. The quilt show seems very far in the future but, as we all know, time flies when you’re having fun. Wednesday, July 11, 10:30 am we’re having a sew-in at Lynn Purple’s house in Sarasota for any member who would like to help make a set. The pattern is easy, using 2.5 inch squares (light, medium and dark) and still turns into a gorgeous quilt. We’ll provide lunch, you provide what you want to drink and we’ll all have a great time. If you’re interested, please call Lynn Purple, 703-283-2942, or email [email protected] and get all the information. Small Quilt Update Helen Lucas reports that she has received 5 small quilts so far for the auction. Many more people have promised they are working on theirs. Please everyone take a few days to whip up some fabulous small quilts for the auction. We had a tremendous selection of quilts at the last show. We love everything we get. Hidden in Paradise Challenge Quilt We still have a few fat quarters left of the challenge fabric. Please see Jann Nohe to purchase your fat quarter. The cost is $2.00 per fat quarter. See the website for the Challenge Quilt guidelines.
