Worship and spiritual life

ST. HILARY The Bishop of Poitiers, France, during the era of the Arian heresy, Hillary fought for the correct understanding and expression of the divinity of Christ. He was known as the “hammer against Arianism” and the “Athanasius of the West,” after the Bishop of Alexandria who fought the heresy in the East. The Christian world was so divided by Arianism that Hilary was exiled twice. His great contribu-tion was the successful expression in Latin of the theolo-gy about Christ, or Christology, that had been developed in Greek. UNDERSTAND THE GOSPEL OF JOHN FEBRUARY 24

TH AT 7:00PM

Following the 6:30pm Mass, Fr. Dolejsi will provide an opportunity to deepen your understanding of the unique gift of the Gospel of John for your spiritual life. This class will look at the differences and similarities with the other Gospels, better understand the seven signs employed by the author, and reflect more deeply on scripture as the source of our theology. Fr. Bryan teaches this same course for the Catechetical Certification Program for the Archdiocese of Seattle.

"The church has the task of recognizing and bringing forth more clearly the desire for God, which is present in the heart of every man and woman." ~~ Pope Francis

Dear sisters and brothers: I pray you and your family had a wonderfully relaxing, recreational Christmas and New Year break for the past 3 weeks. And so we begin 2016 and have much to look forward to in this Year of Mercy. In the coming weeks Fr. Bryan and I will share more about both the spiritual and corporal works of mercy but in this column I want to highlight a new project that I discussed in my homily on December 27th, the Feast of the Holy Family. This effort is directly related to one of the cor-poral works of mercy: sheltering the homeless.

For many months now, almost since I first arrived here in July 2014, I have been pondering how we could utilize the un-used living spaces in the top floor of the parish center, our former convent. There were once up to 12 sisters living in the convent so it’s completely designed for communal living. Except for a few rooms used for storage, most of these rooms sit empty. The parish has had a history of welcoming strangers to our community. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the parish welcomed a single mother and her children to live in Scholastica House behind the parish center.

So, after much prayer and reflection and with input from Fr. Bryan and Brian Anderson, our principal, I sent an email to Archbishop Sartain last month telling him that St. Benedict Parish would be willing to receive two refugee families in 2016. I also told him that we would offer full scholarships to the school for any school-aged children. I did not expect to hear back from him quickly but he responded within two hours. He thanked us for our support and encourages us to be patient as our national leaders determine how refugee families will be screened and cleared for entry into the U.S. As we explore the feasibility of such an effort, we will consult with the Missions Office and other staff of the Archdiocese and Catholic Community Services and/or Catholic Housing Services in this effort. I will seek input for the potential project with all the consultative bodies of the parish: Pastoral Council, Finance Committee, Human Concerns and Social Justice Commission, School Commission and the Parish Staff.

So, for now, I ask all of us to work and pray together as we determine if this effort is feasible for the parish at this time. We need to educate ourselves about the issues involved with supporting a Syrian Muslim or Christian family in our com-munity. We also need to develop a team of volunteers who have skills in remodeling, facilities management, social work, community outreach, and fundraising to make this possible. Several parishioners have already stepped forward and I will be forming a special ad hoc group to begin our discernment. If you feel compelled to work on this or want to just share your concerns, please email me or call me anytime. I will keep you well informed as things progress and let’s all pray often for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Your brother in Christ, Deacon Roy

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE Jesus, whom God called “my beloved son,” is also the “servant” of whom Isaiah speaks in the first reading. We who are baptized in Christ must follow His example and use our time and resources in the service of God and neighbor.

Each scheduled tour begins with a power point presentation by our Principal, Brian Anderson, followed by a walking tour of the school. Please come to see who we are before you make that decision. We look forward to meeting you and your children and hope to be included in their and your future. Take a look at what a Catholic Education has to offer!

ST. MARTIN de PORRES The SMdP needs your help. Our ministry group meets on the first and third Monday mornings of each month to make sandwiches for 225 homeless men, and is seeking volunteers to help with set up and clean up of the sandwich making process. This involves a time commitment of between 2-3 hours twice a month but it is not necessary to be there every time as there is currently one active person doing this. It would be great to have back up for this posi-tion in case of sick children or travel, etc. If interested please con-tact Andrea Vaught at [email protected]. Come join us for this valuable donation to the community. Thank you !!

THE CHURCH COUNCIL OF GREATER SEATTLE I'd never met her before, but a stranger sought me out. "Thank you for being here," she said, "It means a lot." It got me thinking: who should we thank for being here? As a Christian, my first answer must always be the Creator, God -- first and last. But immediately after God, I thank you. Thanks to you, this was a powerful year for faith communities working together where it means a lot. Adequate housing. Welcome for the stranger. Civil conversation on hard topics. During 2015, thanks to your support, the Church Council of Greater Seattle convened 70 gatherings involving 7,000 people and 150 organizations - both secular and faith-based. The star atop the year's work - Se-attle City Council approved $2.3 million in additional funds for emergency shelters after powerful testimony from faith communities and allies. In this hard time, you make that good news possible. The Good News begins with you. Michael Ramos Executive Director
