SRC NEWS

Are you ready to walk in October?

Flemington Primary School will be participating in Walk to School in October this year, starting the first day back of Term 4. Walk to School encourages us all to walk to and from school every school day in October. You can be involved by either walking, riding or scooting to and from school. If you live too far away, check out the park and walk locations on the Walk to School’s website so that you can park your car and walk to school (http://www.mvcc.vic.gov.au/mooneevalleyschools.htm).

Walking to and from school throughout October will help you and your child to build healthy habits for life, improve fitness and build friendships. Walking to school can also help us reduce traffic congestion, parking difficulties around our school and reduce the associated environmental impacts.

Participating students are asked to track their walks on the Walk to School classroom calendar and fill in an individual challenge card (to be provided to students by the SRC day 1 of Term 4). On Tuesday the 10th of October, council officer Maree Robinson will be handing out gold stars for students’ challenge cards at the Wellington Street crossing.

Those who hand in their challenge card to the office at the end of October enter the Victorian Schools draw to win a voucher to sports stores, Bounce and Westfield!

Other ways to get involved and prizes

Walking to school in style

Walk to School is encouraging all kids to get creative and deck out their shoes, bike or scooter for Walk to School month! You can even win cool prizes by sending your designs to [email protected] or sharing them on VicHealth’s Facebook page. If your school has a uniform policy, you can get ideas for decorations that can easily be removed during school hours on the Walk to School website.

Poster challenge

The council will be holding a poster challenge for all students participating in Walk to School month.

If you choose to create a poster, it could show:

students and their friends walking to school

something funny, pretty or interesting that students have seen while walking to or from school

a slogan about why kids should walk to school

if students are too far to walk all the way, their poster could highlight park and walk locations

To enter, students should complete their poster and put it up in a visible position at school, then email [email protected] with their name, phone number, school, a photo of their poster and its location. The three most creative designs will be framed, displayed at a Council venue and on Facebook, and three Council staff will choose a winner. The winning artist will receive a sports store voucher valued at $150. For more details, please visit https://www.walktoschool.vic.gov.au/

Thank you for participating!

DISCO FEVER THANKYOU

WOW! What night! Outside, the weather was challenging, but that didn’t stop the party feet. DJ Angelo was brilliant with his bright lights, good music and vast array of head wear!! The kids, Amanda and a few of the more daring parents went wild! It was so much fun. Turns out my mirror was demonstrating the school value of kindness in telling me my dance moves were groovy… They don’t play those songs on ABC radio…

Thank you does not adequately express the gratitude I have to all the Parent Helpers who participated. Your sense of fun permeated throughout - apologies if I was a pain, especially when I was being police woman – the responsibility went to my head!

Particular thanks to:

The planning team: (including Amanda - aka dancing queen) Your guidance and enthusiasm kept the dream alive. Security: (esp. Peter who lit up the sky) Tough working conditions! Signing in and out team: Awesome! Canteen and snacks: Thanks – great job in monitoring! First aid: Only minor disco dance acquired friction injuries! Disco dancers: Nice work – I missed the really outrageous dance moves but I am sure they were there… Fiona: For providing photographic evidence! Clean up team: Did you dream tinsel? Awesome! The students: You know how to party - wild! CANTEEN

The second last canteen for the term – icypoles, popcorn and juice boxes.

NEXT WEEK: last day of term (1.30 finish) – we’re going to sell left overs! Some hot chocolates, chips from the disco, some doughnuts, choc tops – what-ever we have left over.

Next Meeting – all meetings are the 3rd Tuesday of the month

Tuesday 19th September at 7.30 in the teachers’ tea room. All parents and friends welcome – you don’t need to be a member to attend. We will be:

Reviewing the events of this term

Chatting about next term – Christmas cake stall, canteen.

Discussing events and activities for 2018

2018 fete!

The Annual General Meeting is Tuesday 17th October.

All suggestions are welcome, as are volunteers. I’ll bring cake (!) as a little celebration.

Fit footy food by Pieta Cedaro Dietitian/Nutritionist APD https://www.facebook.com/thebalancedplateaustralia/

With footy finals well underway and given the glorious Melbourne weather of late, it can be all too easy to find yourself snuggled on the couch in front of the TV munching on not so healthy foods. So, be a good role model and show the kids how to enjoy footy finals the healthy way and eat like champions instead. Forget greasy burgers, sausage rolls, crisps, trashy pizzas and instead get the kids to help put together some healthy footy food fare so you can enjoy the matches without putting your health on the backburner.

Try some of the following snacks

Homemade oven baked wedges –skin on wedges baked in little olive oil and sprinkle of herbs and salt

Char-grilled corn cob on the BBQ or just boiled corn cobs are great and so in season!!

Fruit skewers

Half time Oranges

Air-popped popcorn

Roasted chick peas (see recipe below)

Healthy platter: boiled egg, olives, smoked salmon, guacamole or hummus, grissini, wholegrain rice crackers or oat cakes, vegetable sticks-carrot, cucumber, celery

Bruschetta-grab some light sourdough rye and toast, smear with garlic cloves and top with diced chopped ripe tomatoes, fresh basil, red onion and of course drizzle of quality olive oil and balsamic or smashed green peas, fresh mint and ricotta to top

Steamed homemade mini lean chicken or seafood wontons or dim sims

Microwaved mini pappadums with beetroot yoghurt, guacamole or tzatziki (light yoghurt, cucumber and mint dip)

Fresh cooked prawns

Something sweet: dip a few strawberries in a little melted dark chocolate, Medjool dates or put some chopped banana on paddle pop sticks, drizzle with little dark chocolate or dip in vanilla Greek yoghurt and roll in a little chopped nuts and coconut and refreeze.

Date, nut and oat shaped footballs

Watermelon cut into footy shapes

Frozen pineapple sticks

For something more satisfying:

Mini healthy lean burgers or kebabs or mini falafel burgers-take a wholemeal baguette and slice and sandwich lean meatball sized patties between bread pieces and top with little sauce, lettuce, tomato, beetroot, grated carrot etc.

Baked bean and light cheese jaffles on wholegrain bread

Little spinach and ricotta triangles –filo pastry folded with ricotta, spinach and herbs and baked with little olive oil spray

Chicken burritos packed with cooked lean chicken breast, sliced capsicum, avocado, light cheese, grated carrot, tomato and lettuce

Healthy mini meat pies with filo pastry base, lean meat and vegetable filling and topped with mushy peas

Homemade pita pizza-wholemeal pita breads with pasta sauce, olives, mushrooms, capsicum, roasted vegetables of choice e.g. zucchini, pumpkin, light mozzarella or ricotta, lean ham if desired or even prawns if you like the seafood option.

Roasted crispy chickpeas

2 x 420g can chick peas, drained and rinsed

1 ½ tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

½-1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon sweet paprika

2 teaspoons cumin

2 teaspoons -1 tablespoon mild curry powder Method

Place an oven rack in the centre of the oven and preheat to 180C. Spray a baking sheet with canola or olive oil cooking spray. Put the chickpeas on a clean kitchen towel or several paper towels and dry thoroughly. In a medium bowl, toss the chickpeas with olive oil to coat. Sprinkle with the ½ teaspoon salt and combined spices and toss again. Transfer in an even layer to the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 30 minutes then shake the pan and return to oven for another 20-30 minutes or until chickpeas are crunchy. In total they need around 50 minutes to 1 hour. Let them cool for at least 1 hour; the chickpeas will become crunchier as they cool. Sprinkle with extra ½ tsp salt if desired. These are best eaten within 1 day.
