QUICK AND EASY DINNER ROLLS

1 pkg. active dry yeast1 cup lukewarm water1 egg1/4 cup sugar1 teaspoon salt1/4 cup melted butter2 cups sifted flour

Dissolve yeast in water. Add egg, sugar, salt and butter.Add half the flour and beat until smooth. Add rest of the flour andbeat again until smooth and satiny.Fill greased muffin pans half full and let rise until double. Bake at400 degrees for 15 minutes. Brush tops with a bit of melted butter.

NORTH POLE - An elf, repre-senting Santa Claus, expressedgreat joy upon receiving the hun-dreds of letters from LincolnCounty children in recent weeks.Speaking exclusively to TheLincoln Journal, Monday, the elfsaid the letters had come fromshopping malls, from classrooms,from the postal service, and evenfrom The Lincoln Journal itself.

“We greatly appreiciate all thehelp from teachers, parents, andthe good folks at the newspaper, inpulling together all the letters.Every child can sleep peacefully,on Christmas Eve, full knowing

that Santa has completed his listand checked it twice as usual,”said the elf. “Santa and all theelves are working very hard hereto make sure no one is disappoint-ed on Christmas morning,” headded. “It’s impossible to get everysingle item on every list. Theresimply wouldn’t be time or enoughelves to get it done. But we’ve lis-tened to all the children and readevery letter,” the elf promised.“There’ll be some wonderful sur-prises on Christmas morning anda lot of happy faces. MerryChristmas to all in LincolnCounty,” he concluded.

CHRISTMAS EGG NOG

12 eggs, separated1 quart half and half1 quart whole milk1/2 cup sugar1 teaspoon vanilla, or 1/4 cup rum1 pint whipping creamFreshly grated nutmeg

Beat egg yolks with rotary hand mixer until light colored and fluffy-Gradually add sugar and beat until all grains of sugar are dissolved.Stir in vanilla, or whatever flavoring you prefer. In a cold pitcher orpunch bowl, pour in the egg yolks, half and half and whole milk. Beategg whites until very light, but not dry. Add to the yolks, blendingwell. Whip the cream until very foamy. Stir into the yolk mixture.Ladle into punch cups and top with nutmeg.

PEANUT BRITTLE

1 cup Domino white sugar1/2 cup white Karo syrup1/4 cup cold water1 1/2 cups shelled raw peanuts

Mix all together in a large iron skillet and cook over medium heat stir-ring all the while until the peanuts make a popping sound and arelightly golden brown. Have ready 1/2 ts soda and 1/2 ts salt, mixedwell together. Remove candy from heat and immediately stir in thesoda, salt mixture until barely mixed. Immediately pour onto a lightlygreased pan or section of heavy duty foil. Do not stir it around,spread as gently as possible, trying not to break a single bubble.Allow to cool completely, break into pieces and store in air tight tins.

Last week's decision by the West Virginia School Building Authority (WVSBA) to award $1 million in state fund-ing for roofing upgrades at five Lincoln County schools. There is much to be thankful for here. Firstly, we com-

mend Director of Maintenance & Facilities Greg Gosnay and his team for their work in preparing the application.Similarly, the extensive consultations between Superintendent Jeff Midkiff and his colleagues with WVSBA personneland others ensured that confidence was high that this was a worthy and well prepared request for funding. The countywill match the $1 million with $200,000 in local funding. For the five schools, it's a vote of confidence. The county's old-est facility, GVMS, will benefit mightily from this injection of funding for its roofing needs. Similarly, the county's small-est school, at Ranger Elementary, will now have new roofing to go along with the new windows installed in recent years,also thanks to SBA money. Hamlin PK-8 was the other school to receive windows in that round of funding around twoyears ago. As with GVMS and Ranger, the Bobcats at Hamlin will see roofing work. So too will Midway Elementaryand Duval PK-8. We thank the school board for its foresight and realism. The board listened to the needs as outlined byDirector Gosnay. In seeking $1 million, the board put before state decision makers a project that offers great value formoney and appeal in terms of scale. The money committed by the WVSBA extends the life of five aging facilities in

Lincoln County. We're thrilled for our students and school staff. Happy Christmas!

The work of local law enforcement in responding to last week's homicide situation in Hamlin. Our reporter was in thearea of the Highland Apartments from 2 p.m. onward, Thursday, December 14, 2017. By then, the aftermath of the awfuldomestic incident was well underway. Over a half dozen State Police vehicles were at the scene. Ambulances, from CabellCounty and Lincoln County, arrived. West Hamlin PD and Hamlin PD came to and from the scene, where a mom hadbeen slain by her husband, and where he struggled with his own injuries. A crime scene unit arrived from Huntingtonshortly after 3 p.m. At all times, the officers we spoke with were discrete, courteous, and professional. They gave us infor-mation when they could. They withheld what they had to withhold. When the time came, names were released and a pos-sible charge was announced. Last week's loss of life shocked the local community. Young children were the innocent vic-tims, with a mother lost and a father facing the worst of charges while battling his injuries. As all this unfolded, our statetroopers and municipal police coped heroically with the horrors they faced, and helped ease troubled minds and broken

hearts throughout Hamlin and beyond. We also commend those who prayed and did so much more for the familyaffected by last week's tragic happenings. Teachers, counselors, CPS professionals, and many others all stepped

up and did what they do best, last week, caring for those visited by unspeakable sadness.

The season of goodwill is upon us, and Lincoln County will pause forChristmas this coming Monday. In addition to our annual Christmas miracle ofa double Thumbs Up (see below), here's what else were celebrating as we nearthe turn of the year.

•An independent school systemLast Tuesday saw the quiet passing of a fifth anniversary in Lincoln

County. It was five years ago on that date (12/12/2012) that the West VirginiaBoard of Education finally devolved full control of all education matters backto the Lincoln County Board of Education. In those five years, we had just onechange of superintendent, a relatively low turnover of school board members,and a near perfect record of unanimous votes on everything from hirings to busbuying, from legal decisions to bond and levy calls. We're thankful for the lead-ership of both Patricia Lucas and Jeff Midkiff during the five years and more.Both have steered a steady course through waters that are consistently choppyby their nature. We also salute our school board members. They meet around40 times per year. They get paid about $6,000 for the year. The meetings canlast anything from a few minutes to several hours, averaging around an hour orso. The audience is usually small, but sometimes bigger. The agendas are var-ied. The diligence and devotion from the five board members is constant.

•Eight energized schoolsOur eight schools have shown impressive commitment and openness to the

countywide Leader In Me initiative. We've heard teacher after teacher, princi-pal after principal, and students at the various schools all speak in praise of thegrant-supported program. We're seeing results in terms of how students feelthey have ownership of their schools, their data, their decisions, their outcomes,and their futures. Contrast the upbeat language from schools at LSIC presenta-tions to the board in recent months, with the widely decried Learning Focusedinitiative pre 12/12/2012. That latter effort drew hefty criticism from manyteachers, seven or eight years ago, after it was instituted here during the finalyears of state intervention in the county. Even with a not insignificant round of

principal and assistant principal changes these past months, schools have hadpositive and energetic starts to a school year that's nearing the half way pointalready.

•Regeneration and renewalWe've written here before about the improved appearance of Hamlin and

West Hamlin. Under the leadership of Mayor Adkins and Mayor Burton, bothmunicipalities have worked to clear the decay. In the county seat, theHometown Hamlin committee has done stellar work with only a small amountof funding. The fall street fair, the annual Heat in the Hills Chilifest by LincolnPrimary Care Center (LPCC), the Fourth of July celebration, and the annualTrick or Treat events all happened without a hitch this year. We commendeveryone involved. We also note that the main thoroughfare in Hamlin has hadits appearance greatly enhanced, thanks to the efforts of LPCC; their work con-tinues, and we look for more great and exciting things from them, not only onWalnut Street, but beyond.

•The centrality of faith in our communityOur church page (see 6a) remains a vibrant and changing document.

Houses of worship regularly call us with updates about services, homecomings,gospel sings, and revivals. We're thankful for the vast array of churches, fromHamlin to Harts, and from Woodville to out Wayne. Our special extra sectionthis week is filled with letters to Santa from wide-eyed youngsters full of hope.We urge you to show them page 8 and 9 at the heart of that seasonal insert,wherein the the Gospel of Luke recounts the Nativity of the Lord, the reason.

•YouFinally, we're thankful for readers, print and online subscribers, and adver-

tisers who make our weekly papers possible. This is our 115th year of LincolnJournals, the current issue being our 5,944th weekly offering. We thank you foryour support, and for allowing us to tell Lincoln County's story. We look for-ward to writing the next chapters, next week and beyond.
