Local youngsters competing in the motor bike events on the weekend

There were lots of trophies and ribbons being handed outlocally at this year’s Coober Pedy and Oz Mineral Races. Itseems motor bikes as a local sport is on increase.

The competitors had many supporters in tow, making the dayyet another fun social event in the annual calendar.

Many will already be looking forward to next year’s races andpracticing their skills in the hope of doing better or maintainingtheir high standard.

Look on page 12 for the result and enjoy some of the photos.Well try and put more in next time.

Many readers will be aware that Coober Pedy has a"Community within a Community". The CooberPedy Village is a purpose built camp for staff of ExactMining Services working at IMX Resources' CairnHill mine site.

Outback Parks and Lodges (OPL) who I work for, administer the Village. They also have camps in WesternAustralia similar to the village here in Coober Pedy.

Coober Pedy Village currently has 101 accommodationrooms, a large laundry for the residents, a recreation roomincluding gym facilities, barbeque area and a dining roomwhere delicious meals are served for breakfast and dinner. The meals really are great and I have the body to prove it!We also have two fulltime chefs, kitchen staff, housekeepers, a groundsman and a village manager (that'sme - the old sheila!) The majority of our support staffwithin the village reside locally.

Resident numbers vary according to production schedulesat site. The miners who wish to live within the CooberPedy township are offered a financial incentive by IMXand some workers have moved to Coober Pedy with theirfamilies already.

Life in the village is sometimes a bit hum-drum and atother times highly entertaining.

The day starts at about 4 a.m. with sleepy eyed men andwomen arriving in the dining room. Breakfast and dinnerare smorgasbords and we all help ourselves. Lunch stuff(crib food) is available and everyone has differing ideason what's best to take to work (peanut butter and jam onbread is not my idea of a fun lunch).

buggers! All the while, the chefs are working a 12 hourshift to ensure there is a good nutritious meals for theevening, a variety of cooked and cooled meats and saladsfor lunches, and breakfasts are sorted. Our groundsmanis all the while working away fixing this or that. I on theother hand, sit in the sun doing my nails (it's a dirty jobbut someone has to do it!)

We have a 9.30pm curfew which ensures everyone getsa good sleep. It's a nice life.

5.45 (a.m/p.m) rolls around pretty quick, the bus chugsin and we do it all again.

This year we have supported the Australia Day Event atthe Old Timers Mine and donated lots towards the PoliceGolf Tournament. The proceeds of our recycling effortsare put aside to donate to local organisations.

OPL love getting involved in our communities and arewilling to support community fundraisers and events. We'dlike to sponsor regular events, so I'll know how well thisarticle has been read by the response I get from organisers.Feel free to email me on [email protected]

The purpose of this (and hopefully future regular articles)is to share a little of our ups and downs as a communitywithin a community. Too often we hear negative remarksabout miners coming to work in small communities. Ican assure you, that the members of the Coober PedyVillage will continue to do our upmost to have a positiveimpact on this town.

So, for now, WATCH THIS SPACE!

Then it's on the bus and off to work. We have our own48 seater coach, which seems to also double as a mobilesleeping people mover. Those who've completed nightshift arrive on the bus and make their way to breakfast, showers and then beds. Best not to make eye contactwith the arriving night shift people. Some are not veryfriendly after a 12 hour shift through the night.

After the night shift people are fed, cleaned and sleepingis when the housekeepers kick into action. There arerooms to clean, laundry to wash and fold (that'sapproximately 250 items), paths to sweep, washingmachines to scrub (every day), recycling to sort, rubbishbins to washout etc. etc. I tell you, if there's no rest forthe wicked, those housekeepers must have been bad

OZ MINERALS | RESPECTINTEGRITY ACTION RESULTS

The day after the 2012 Far North EconomicDevelopment Forum, visiting guests accepted aninvitation from local opal miner Bob Blesing to seean opal mining operation first hand.

Amongst the privileged group who went undergroundwere IMX Resources Board members and senior stafffrom IMX’s Perth and Adelaide offices. They had travelledto Coober Pedy especially to attend the Forum. Whilst intown they also took the opportunity to gain a greaterunderstanding of opal and how it is mined.

"We were honoured to accept Bob’s invitation to visit hismining operation,” said IMX Resources Chairman, JohnNitschke. "We recognise that opal mining is the heartbeatof Coober Pedy, it was an important part of our visit," hesaid.

Bob Blesing has been opal mining for 35 years and iscurrently considering building a new tunnelling machineto expand his operation. “It’s good to see the larger minerstaking an interest in what we are doing here,” he said.

“We are all part of the same industry and the principles ofour operations are ultimately the same. We mine a productas cheaply and safely as we can and we sell it for the bestprice we can get for it,” said Bob.

IMX generously provides annual sponsorship to theCoober Pedy Opal Exploration Program and the Gem TradeShow.

"We understand that Coober Pedy wouldn’t have existedif it wasn’t for opal mining and that's why IMX is proudto support the industry through the Coober Pedy Miners'Association,” said John.

Coober Pedy is still the "Opal Capital of the World" and isrecognised internationally to be one of the most uniqueplaces in Australia. While Coober Pedy continues toproduce fine quality opal, other mining operations nowexist around the town.

Just outside of CooberPedy, IMX’s Cairn Hill ironore-copper mine is nowproducing 1.8 Milliontonnes per annum of apremium quality, magnetite-copper direct shipping ore.

The Cairn Hill mine employsabout 200 people throughthe supply chain of theoperation from mine toport.

Joe Mastrangelo and SueCzerniak from theResources and EnergySector InfrastructureCouncil, both speakers atthe FNED Forum, alsodecided to seize theopportunity to learn moreabout the industry that hasbeen an important part ofSouth Australia’s economyand culture for almost acentury.

Where did the name of your street come from?

Part 12 in a series - by Sue Britt

Coober Pedy Streetand Road Names

HALLION STREET

“Big Lick” Bill Hallion was an early settler. Vin Wakewrote several stories about Bill’s trip to Coober Pedyin 1921.

Hallion travelled on the Ghan train from Quorn to WilliamCreek with opal buyer Dick Penna, Bob Trow and anAmerican traveller they called “Yank.” At William Creekthey joined Henry Brooks who was driving a buggy withthe mail, baggage, and meat from Anna Creek. Therewasn’t room on the buggy for everyone so they hiredhorses to ride the 100-mile trip.

Hallion was a champion sprinter, a good cricket bowler, man who could “ride anything ever foaled.” An experi-enced bushman, he could build and fix with the best ofthem. He was also fond of singing, betting on runningraces, telling tall tales and playing practical jokes.

One story, retold by Vin Wake in Opal Men, was about ateam of 30 donkeys Hallion used to cart sleepers for thenew railway. He pulled up at a pub and paid someone togive the donkeys nosebags of feed and some buckets ofwater. “When I comes out of the pub at two in theafternoon I’m too full of beer to remember to take theusual precaution after donks have been standing in onespot for hours. Instead of wheeling hard on the lock, Idrove the team straight ahead – and there I was - stucktill the next day. . . Those donks had been piddling on theone spot for hours and when the wagon wheels struck itthey bogged to the axles.”

One of the practical jokes he played on the Yank was toput a couple of 2-inch-long bulldog ants in his swag, thisafter filling his head with stories about the danger of Aus-tralian snakes and the bush cure for snake bite. Later theYank evened the score by putting prickly burrs underHallion’s saddle blanket.

Hallion earned his nickname in a cricket match betweenBroken Hill and The Rest. The other bowlers licked theirfingers to get a good grip on the ball. Hallion licked hiswhole arm and from that day on he was known as “BigLick.”

Bill Hallion was a good friend of Minnie Berrington. In1930, when rumours of opal at Andamooka were firstwhispered, they made their way in convoy over sand dunesand stony hills with George Malycha to the secret place. They weren’t the first to find opal there but they werecredited with “putting Andamooka on the map.”

Bill Hallion found opal but he became better known as anopal classer. Hallion Hill in the Andamooka fields is namedfor him.

The visit to Rock Hill Bore on Sunday August 5th proved tobe an interesting and informative afternoon for the 18 peoplewho joined the Historical Society on their outing.

The first stop was at the site of Warwick Goldsworthy’s airstripat the bottom of Tom Cat Hill. This is where Warwick startedflying passengers from Coober Pedy to Pt Augusta. He sawa need for a regular air service and so in 1963 Opal Air wasestablished by Warwick with the help of other financialbackers. Other tales of not so successful aviation venturesfeaturing gliders and hang gliders were also shared.

We learnt why the big R featured on R Hill. A dozer driverback in the late 1960’s had a crush on the author Rena Briandand so he graded the R on the hill facing her dugout as areminder of his affections!

In the late 1960’s a casino on R Hill was proposed by localentrepreneur John Andrea and the then Labour Govt led byDon Dunston. Thankfully the ground was unsuitable for alarge scale excavation and the idea was dropped. During thisperiod a lot of opal was being found, resulting in a lot ofmoney being made by the miners – much of which was spentat the gambling and card tables.

We continued our drive onto Rock Hill Bore, which is on theBreakaways reserve, stopping to look at old campsites onthe way.

At the abattoir site some ruins of the buildings, tanks andbore remain.

Fleming Jensen arrived in Coober Pedy in 1973 and appliedfor and was granted a small lease on which to construct anabattoir. At first he sourced his meat and butchered it atAnna Creek Station and then trucked it to his butcher shop inCoober Pedy, which was situated where the car wash is today.Later on his shop was at his home in Kent Street CooberPedy.

The lease was granted to himin 1976 and held for 14 years. He constructed, with the helpof a $60,000 grant from theGovernment, 162 kms offencing, 10 dams, 36 kms ofpipeline to watering points, tanks, bore and a slaughterhouse.

Problems however arosewith Inspectors who deemedthat the water from the borewas not suitable and that thebore was situated too closeto the slaughter house. Laterwhen the Breakaways weredeclared a reserve area therunning of cattle on the areaalso became unpopular.Approximately 200-300 cattlewere run on the area andFleming reported that hisfences were often cutresulting in the cattlewandering off lease area.

In 1990 Fleming abandonedthe lease. It was pretty welleaten out by then due tooverstocking. Fleming isremembered as a colourfulcharacter as his advertisingslogans suggest – one being“Eat Beef and Be Bully”.

Letters to the editorTo the editor,

The Coober Pedy Regional Times

As a professional land surveyor who works in the CooberPedy area I was fortunate to be able to attend the excellentFar North Economic Development Forum.

I was however disappointed on two fronts.

First, that there were no elected members from the two majorpolitical parties present to hear first hand from local business

Adventure ToursAustralia Group

& Outback Communities

Eulogy for Ralph Underwood

and key mining industry speakers on their future developmentaspirations and associated problems in moving forward inthe remote northern area of South Australia.

The second disappointment was the absence of the traditionalland owners or a representative speaking, as the future ofboth Coober Pedy business and mining industry developmentare now intrinsically tied up with native title.

Richard Abbott

Adelaide

Past and long term resident of Coober Pedy RalphUnderwood passed away suddenly on 23rd July2012, at Pt Wakefield. Ralph lived in Coober Pedyfor 29 years during which time he contributedsignificantly to our community. He was a foundingmember of the Coober Pedy Golf Club and served aspresident of the club for several years.

Ralph mined with his son Brian for 16 years beforeretiring from opal mining. Hopeful Hills was the areawhere the Underwood family settled, at one timethere being 6 family dugouts in the area now knownas Underwood Crescent.

Below is the eulogy presented at Ralph’s funeral on30th July at Pt Wakefield.

Ralph was born on 26th July 1918 at Balaklava, thethird child of George and Bertha Underwood.

Ralph attended the Port Wakefield school until inhis seventh year; he completed the ProgressCertificate at 15 years of age. After leaving schoolhe had a series of jobs, one of which was driving thehearse and assisting the local undertaker. He finallysettled into working in his father’s garage. He had areputation locally as a larrikin and claimed to haveheld the speed record for riding his motor bike thelength of the main street of Port Wakefield.

On 7th March 1942 he married his local sweetheartPearl (Edna) Mathews at age 24 years. When warbroke out in 1939 Ralph applied to join the RAAFbut was not accepted so he and Edna moved toAdelaide where he worked at the munitions factoryat Islington as a fitter and turner. Later he reappliedfor the RAAF as aircrew and was accepted. Flyingfor Ralph was a labour of love, something he pursuedfor the rest of his years. He retired from the RAAFas a Pilot Officer at the end of the war and returnedto Pt Wakefield and his father’s garage. Heproceeded to build this business up and he and Ednaalso built their own home.

Edna and Ralph had four children Brian, Peter, Marciaand Annette.

The motor industry was the mainstay of his life untilin 1975 at 57 years he was ready for a change. Withno security other than hope and hard work Ednaand Ralph headed for the remote opal field of CooberPedy. There Ralph and his son Brian designed, engineered and maintained all their miningequipment.

Ralph had developed a passion for languages andCoober Pedy with its ethnic mix of European minersand Chines opal buyers was made for him. He taughthimself to speak Italian, Greek, German, Cantonese,French and was still learning Mandarin at the timeof his death.

The opal industry proved to be an extreme challengetaking many years to achieve success.

At the age of 65 he was able to achieve one of hislife long dreams of owning his own aircraft and onlyretired from flying at the age of 80. He had alsobeen a keen glider pilot flying at the Balaklava GlidingClub.

Coober Pedy along with its successes and greatlifestyle also brought heartaches, with the untimelydeaths of his daughter Marcia from cancer in 1993

and his wife Edna fromAltzheimer’s disease in1988.

Loneliness and lookingback was not Ralph’sstyle and so in 1990 hemarried another PortWakefield girl, MaureenNowlan (nee Madigan),a marriage that lasted 22years.

Ralph’s other passionwas golf, just aboutevery spare minute of histime was devoted firstlyto the Port WakefieldClub and then the CooberPedy Club, receiving LifeMembership from both . He won the a “C” GradeChampionship at the ageof 77 years. Right up tillhe died, 3 days short ofhis 94th birthday Ralphwas still out on thecourse practicing anddeveloping new theorieson how to improve hisgame.

Retirement and his returnto Port Wakefield in 2004saw him return to hisbeloved home townwhere he helped out inthe community inwhatever capacity hewas able. He finally gotto launch his old paddleboat, which he had spentmany years developingand making, however Idon’t think it everreached the potential hehad hoped for. A drivedown the wharf to checkthe tide was always onthe cards.

Ralph had a great lovefor the coastal town ofPt Wakefield and itspeople and equally heloved the outback andCoober Pedy, heembraced whatever lifedelivered to him, alwaysseeing a positive in it.

Ralph died with noregrets, he dideverything he wanted to.His Christianphilosophy was to loveyour fellow man. Hispositive friendlycharacter will be missedby many.

To his family he wascaring and loving, cherished by all hisgrand children and greatgrandchildren.

Aboriginal communities in the Coober Pedyregion have farewelled a much-loved andhighly respected Aboriginal Elder and authorMrs Eileen ‘Unkari’ Crombie, who passed awayon Wednesday 18 July.

Mrs Crombie was born in 1935 at Sailors Well nearMintabie, and at 18 moved to Coober Pedy to lookfor opal at 12 Mile.

She met her husband Billy Pepper at KoonibbaMission and they had eight children together. WhenBilly passed away in 1969 Mrs Crombie moved backto Coober Pedy.

In the late 1980s Mrs Crombie, along with fellowYankunytjatjara/Antikarinya Elders Ivy MakintiStewart and Emily Munyungka Austin, founded theKupa Piti Kungka Tjuta – Senior Aboriginal Women’sCouncil of Coober Pedy.

Alongside many local Aboriginal women, the KungkaTjuta worked tirelessly throughout the 1990s withlittle or no resources to fulfil important culturalobligations.

The Kungka Tjuta were awarded the prestigiousGoldman Prize in 2003 as ‘environmental heroes’for speaking for culture and country.

Eileen 'Unkari' CrombieThey also formed the 'Irati Wanti' (‘the poison - leaveit!’) campaign to protest against the FederalGovernment's dumping of nuclear waste in theCentral Desert.

Mrs Crombie played an integral part in the campaignby leading and instigating many activities and eventsthat proved pivotal to its success. Her acclaim andthat of the other Kungka Tjuta carries on today, giving strength to other individuals and communitiesstruggling against mining in their country.

Commissioner for Aboriginal Engagement KhatijaThomas said Mrs Crombie’s passing is a huge lossto the Coober Pedy community in which she washeavily involved.

''She was the chairperson of Umoona Aboriginal AgedCare, a Senior Cultural Advisor for Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara Native Title claimants, a member ofthe Council of Aboriginal Elders of SA for the CooberPedy region and participant in Tjamiku Kamiku –the grandparents’ knowledge program that conductsmentoring camps and works with children in theschool and community,” she said.

“Mrs Crombie was also involved in locally promotingReconciliation Day, Sorry Day and NAIDOC Week.”

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation PaulCaica said Mrs Crombie was dedicated to ensuringAboriginal culture remained alive and strong forcurrent and future generations.

“Mrs Crombie worked very hard in her owncommunity and beyond to preserve Aboriginal culturefor future generations,” he said.

“She was a strong and compassionate woman; onceshe set her mind to a task she never gave up. Shebelieved that preserving Aboriginal culture was notonly important for Aboriginal people but also for theland.

“On behalf of the Government I offer ourcondolences to Mrs Crombie’s family and friendsduring this difficult time”

Mrs Crombie received numerous awards throughouther life including being named on the 2009 SouthAustralian Women’s Honour Roll and receiving the2010 Gladys Elphick Award for outstandingcontributions as a Senior Aboriginal woman in theteaching of Aboriginal traditional law, culture andenvironment.
