POLICE arrested one of the suspects inthe killing of Kalinga province radio reporter-commentator Jose Daguio, the first media fa-tality under the administration of PresidentAquino.

Suspect Edwin Guiawal was identified bywitnesses as the one who shot Daguio onJuly 3 in his home in Tuga Village , Tabuk,Kalinga.

Edmund Bilog, Lando Bilog and DaldinGuiawal, the triggerman’s brother, were alsotagged in the killing of Daguio. Police havelaunched a manhunt against them.

Philippine National Police (PNP) spokes-man Sr. Supt. Agrimero Cruz said Daguiocould have been killed because he was zero-ing in on Guiawal's group's alleged activi-ties like cattle rustling and breaking and en-tering houses or akyat-bahay.

Before Daguio was killed, the Guiawalbrothers have standing warrants of arrest fordouble murder, the PNP spokesperson said.

Senators oppose pork barrel cutSENATORS Gregorio Honasan and

Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. yesterday ex-pressed objection to the proposed cutto their pork barrel allocation suppos-edly to address the ballooning bud-get deficit of the country.

Honasan said the Aquino adminis-tration should not use the priority de-velopment assistance fund (PDAF) orpork barrel allocation for lawmakers to“harass” the political opposition.

“The pork barrel should not be usedas a weapon or as tool to force theissue on certain legislative agenda,”Honasan said adding that PDAF useshould be transparent.

Honasan said that it is alright withhim to slash the lawmakers' pork barrel

by 57 percent.“So either way, I can live with any-

thing. Kaya lang huwag naman itonggamitin to twist the arm of certainvulnerable legislators. Alam namannatin na ‘yun ang political reality,” hesaid.

Marcos opposed the cut on theirpork barrel saying it is not right toalways associate pork barrel fundswith corruption.

“PDAF has always been suspectedas source of corruption of congress-men and senators and other govern-ment officials. Then why don’t theyfix the system,” Marcos said.

During a media forum on Thurs-day, Marcos said the reason why we

are always talking about cutting thepork barrel is because it is suspectedby many that it is just a hand out.

“That is not the case. If you goaround the country, you will seemany areas with no projects becausethere is no PDAF,” he said.

TWO nominees of Ang KasanggaPartylist group have been disqualified bythe Commission on Elections (Comelec)for failure to prove that they represent amarginalized group.

In a 12-page resolution, Comelec 1st Di-vision disqualified businessman TeodoricoHaresco and former city mayor EugenioJose V. Lacson, allegedly allies of formerPresident Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

The poll body said Haresco and Lacsonare considered ‘bigshots’ being part ownerof several corporations and three termmayor of San Carlos City, respectively.

QUEZON City Mayor Herbert Bautista hasassured city’s taxpayers that his adminis-tration will not be imposing additional taxesduring his term.

Bautista made the assurance as a supportwith the administration policy of PresidentAquino with regard to the non-impositionof additional taxes so as not to add burdento the Filipinos.

Although Bautista admitted that there isa need for more funds for his programs suchas in housing, education, and infrastructuredevelopment, he said that creating additionalor new taxes is not the only solution.

“We can realize this administration’sdreams without imposing additional taxes…only an innovative mind and strict imple-mentation of the revenue code are needed,”he said.

Stressing the lesson he learned from formerBudget and Management Secretary EmiliaBoncodin, his former professor, Bautista claimedthat there are lots of ways to augment and in-crease the city government revenue.

Bautista stressed that one way of increas-ing the city government’s revenue is the strictimplementation of payment of taxes due fromcompanies using city government propertiessuch as lands and structures. The lawmaker said he is set to file againthe “Child Nutrition Act of the Philippines” to address the malnourishment problemamong Filipino children.

“The most effective means to target child-hood malnutrition is through the publicschool network,” Angara said.

“Although there are current school-feed-ing programs administered by the Depart-ment of Education they heavily rely on allo-cations from budgets of senators and con-gressmen, or through donations from privateindividuals and corporations,” he said.

The bill provides that the Department ofAgriculture (DA), DepEd, Dept. Of Health(DOH) and the National Nutrition Councilwill have to initiate and expand a system ofdistribution of milk and fortified snack foodsto public elementary schools five times everyweek; and vitamins and user-friendly nutri-tion information and educational materials.

Violet Kowal claims Gibson met with herat his Malibu, California home last year,while he was dating Russian singer OksanaGrigorieva, and the pair had sex.

CALOOCAN City Mayor Enrico “Recom”Echiverri has instructed the local police forceto intensify security measures to weed outcriminal elements in the city.

His religioussymbol for Aton, the sun god, was repre-sented by a single disc of light with ema-nating rays. Though this Pharaoh’s ideacame closer to the one God of the Bible,it was still idolatry.

When Paul addressed the people inAthens, he was grieved by the idolatryin that city. Yet he used the people’simperfect understanding of God to pointthem to the God of Scripture. Of theirefforts in trying to find God, Paul said:“God, who made the world and every-thing in it, since He is Lord of heavenand earth, does not dwell in temples madewith hands” (Acts 17:24).

In our increasingly pluralistic world, thepeople around us may worship a multiplicityof deities. Yet their spiritual journey neednot end there. We never know when some-one might be moving toward the kingdomof God. Following the example of Paul,we should respect a person’s religiousbackground, watch for spiritual receptiv-ity, and then point him or her to the onetrue God of Scripture.

A Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to leadthe lost away from all that is false. Andto lead them to You—the one and onlyGod— who alone offers true life. Amen.

God alone is worthy of our worship.

Jorg Mardos, 27, was ar-rested on Wednesday after hisflight returned to Port Eliza-beth in South Africa.

He was originally chargedwith assaulting a cabin crew

Magistrate's Court on Satur-day he was sentenced to threemonths in prison, suspendedfor a year, for a “lesser seri-ous” contravention of SouthAfrica's Civil Aviation Act.

According to the SouthAfrican Press Association,Magistrate Peter Cambell toldMardos that he was not go-ing to impose a fine because“you have lost so much al-ready.”

Cambell said that Mardos

has been unable to recoverabout US$4,607 in tickets af-ter his flight to Durban hadto turn back resulting him tomiss the World Cup semifi-nal between Spain and Ger-many.

SAPA reported that thecourt found out that Mardospushed and shoved two cabincrew attendants and shoutedat them.
