Directors and coordinators of the Prince Albert Grand Council met in August to begin discussions on the proposed federal education legislation. What has resulted from those discussions is the creation of the PAGC First Nations Education Act Template that communities are currently engaging in. The Federal Government in its recent release of the Federal Bill has given First Nations 75 days to consult and provide feedback before it reaches first reading in the House of Commons (early January). There are five conversion themes in the proposed Act; Standards, Systems, Governance, Funding and Language/Culture. Despite federal criticism, the most important issue with education leaders has been and always will be the lack of resources. The PAGC Chiefs met with the United Nation repertoire on Indigenous Rights, James Anaya, on Sunday, October 13 th . They presented Mr. Anaya (Apache lawyer) a resolution to assert their Inherent and Treaty Rights to education. This meeting was an important event because the Federal Government will have no choice but to review the PAGC First Nations response to the proposed legislation. I would like to think that at the end of the day that our First Nation students see improved resources through equitable funding. If our society firmly believes it is as strong as its weakest members, then, Canada’s Action Plan must involve huge investments in First Nation Education. Now is the time for First Nations to re-affirm the vision our forefathers envisioned at the time of Treaty signing which was to move our People forward while protecting language and culture. Like my mushum (senator, Angus Mirasty) once said, “The chiefs today have a lot of work to do. Everything is advancing, and they have education. …they can see things now that a long time ago they couldn’t” Now is the time for Elders, parents, leaders, and other community stakeholders to construct their own vision for education. Through careful dialogue and communication, we can have a positive contribution to education for the next thirty years. Edward H. The Prince Albert Grand Council RMO department is committed to providing quality special education initiatives for students in PAGC schools. A warm welcome is extended to the many staff and students who are off to another school year. PAGC RMO held its first Special Education Focus Group meeting of this school year on October 10, 11, 2013 in Prince Albert. Forty participants representing all Bands from within PAGC area were in attendance. All PAGC RMO staff were on hand as well to welcome, offer presentations and make themselves known to the participants. Veteran staff welcomed new staff members. Each school representative was given the opportunity to showcase their school and mention interesting facts

about the communities they work in. Because of the long-term existence of these annual focus group meetings, it has become a forum where representatives can network with each other about the latest special education initiatives/programs, strategies that work in their schools, and reconnect with familiar faces once again. The presentations at this meeting ranged from RMO latest information updates, Brigance Early Development Screening, Targeted Behaviour Program Criteria, assistive technology including the use of IPad applications to a review of the process for Educational Psychology & Special Education Consultant Team Services. The next Special

Education Focus Group meeting will be conducted in January of 2014. The RMO will continue to offer many services to all PAGC schools as requested. These services may range from individual referrals to conducting workshops.

site. This Teacher Planner

allows you to add lessons

on a daily basis. The

Teacher Planner also

allows you to save the

lessons for future use.

This Teacher Planner also

has the Provincial

Outcomes and Indicators

which can be added into

your lesson plans.

DADAVAN has also

added a new Mark Book.

to import your marking

scheme which then in

turn, transfers them to the

report cards.

DADAVAN has also

added an online file

manager where you can

place year plans, unit

plans etc for school or

future use. It accepts all

formats.

A DADADAVAN workshop

was held in September.

This workshop was

attended by 34 people.

The attendees included

principals, teachers and

secretaries. The workshop

covered DADAVAN set-up

and issues related to the

DADAVAN system.

opportunity to meet Grand

Teacher Services Mary Sasakamoose/Shirley Waskewitch Tanisi,

Teacher Services Consultants, Mary Sasakamoose and Shirley Waskewitch want to welcome students, teachers and administrators back for another school year. As the school year progresses we continue to visit schools and work with school staff to provide curriculum and instructional support and guidance. We will also share inspiring stories. Here are two such stories.

As we continue our journey in education there will be moments that take your breath away. Two such events occurred to date. The first was a Denesuline teacher orientation that involved a culture camp experience! Hatchet Lake First Nation and Fr. Megret Schools offered teachers a vivid experiential learning approach where the elders and culture bearers reflected teachings of the north. The other event was a reflective experience where both kindergarten and high school graduation marked a day to remember. Red Earth Cree Nation and the Kiwaytinohk Elementary and the J.W. Head Memorial High School mirrored a beginning and a future for the proud graduates. Both Fr. Megret and Red Earth Schools are applauded for their achievements.

We are rarely in office however we do try to make it back to the office every Friday.

WOW!!! What a busy fall!!! To date, I have spent the majority of my time in the far north. It has been an exciting adventure with Apple Training and Smart Board Training. Technology has given us fantastic tools to use in education – but we need training and more training. It is exciting to see ereaders taking the place of textbooks and iPads being used in all grades. The apps seem to be unlimited in their educational potential – at a reasonable cost once the

hardware is purchased. Currently, I am in the process of delivering mini iPads to our schools. This is quite time consuming because each iPad has to be configured and apps installed. I am also hoping to deliver a short in service to in school staff on the use of these fantastic devices. We are delighted to hear and see the results teachers who are using the Engage Literacy are having. Each one of our schools has this set – so if you have not had a look

at it or would like more information, feel free to call me. The Northern Library Conference will be held in Prince Albert, October 15th to 18th. It promises to be an interesting learning experience for those attending as we travel from Library Pro to Puppets and back again! New Paths for Education

New Paths for Education Program AANDC have scrutinized our 2012-2013 Final Report & our 2013-2014 Proposal. We have had to be very detailed in our reports. AANDC want travel expenses - formulas, textbook names, salaries for every employee, cultural supplies – list of each item and many more details. It has been a very challenging year. Funding was halted until all these details were completed in our reports. All reports must have very specific details as to what is planned and where the funding was spent! It is very important for all First Nations to have these reports completed correctly & by the deadlines. Physical Literacy Group The Physical Literacy network of Physical Education Teachers had workshops and meetings on September 11th – 13th . Workshops were held on Badminton, Volleyball & Technology. We held our Athletic Association meeting where we discussed sporting events, dates and regulations for the PAGC School Championships. Winter Games 2014 PAGC is hosting the 2014 Winter Games on April 21st – 25th in Prince Albert. We need volunteers to help run this huge event. Plan to be a part of the Games!

Lt. Governors Arts Volunteer Award

Shona Stapleton was nominated for the Lt. Governors Arts Volunteer Award for her many years of service with the PAGC Fine Arts Festival. Mr. Edward Mirasty nominated her and 5 other colleagues who saw fit to write letters of support for her nomination. Shona was shortlisted and invited to attend the Awards banquet that held on September 25th at TCU Place. She had some very tough competition in that category. She felt truly honored and humbled to be nominated alongside these other fantastic people. Shona had two tables of supporters with her including; Vice Chief Joe Tsannie, CEO Johnny Walker, Director of Education Edward Mirasty, Associate Director of Education Rosalie Tsannie Burseth; as well as family members including her husband Wayne Stapleton, Son – Zane, sisters – Monique Rotsey and her partner Justin, and Erin Gagne. When her name was announced as winner, the two tables could be heard loud and clear. It was an amazing night. This is also a good ending to her many years of service to the Festival. Shona will be coordinating the festival for one final year which will mark her 20th year of service with the festival. That in itself is an honor and a privilege.
