Workshop 5: Blue economy in the maritime sector: innovation & technology in marine / maritime industries

The aim is to identify the needs of innovative products and services to implement the IMP in the Mediterranean area. This workshop has been focused on identifying activities with high growth potential in the long term and to study interactions between the different activities and their potential impact on the marine environment and biodiversity.

Conclusions

The implementation of the IMP in the Mediterranean area is going to require the development of innovative products and services.

Spain has the necessary skills and capacities in maritime issues to attend

There are specific needs and opportunities in the following fields: Marine renewable energy. Internacional regulations regarding ship`s emissions. Development of LNG in shipping.

• Marine Renewable Energies (offshore wind, wave, tidal power and hybrid systems), offer new business opportunities for the marine-maritime sector and Spain has enough technological capacity to meet

• The “Marine Renewable Energies Forum” of the Spanish Maritime Technology Platform (SMTP) is the meeting point for organisations interested in marine renewable energies.

• More than 90 industrial Key players, Research Centres, Universities, Public Organisations, Singular Scientific and Technological Infrastructures (SSTI).

• Main test centres: CENER, IH Cantabria; CEDEX, ZEFIR, PLOCAN, CEHIPAR, BIMEP.

• A common approach to RTDI in Marine Renewable Energies:• Innovative vessels, devices and infrastructures• New areas of resource exploitation

Ship`s safety regulations under development

• Internacional regulations as well as European are becoming stricter in relation to ship`s emissions.

• Installation of big equipment and use of distillate diesel oils is a possible solution.

• Europe is promoting the creation of LNG Infrastructures for maritime and terrestrial supply.

• New international standards and regulations are being developed to overcome safety challenges related to the use of alternative fuels like LNG.

Pilars for the development of LNG

• Technology• Industrial applications that have to be transferred to maritime industry. • Opportunities in tanks and isolation, propulsion, auxiliary systems,

safety.

• LegislationThere are not international regulations sufficiently developed. In ports: new rules for bunkering, new develops, logistics.

• LogisticsTruck, ground supply stations, barge, floating supply stations

• FinancingStrong initial investment with short- term payback.

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles for pipeline inspection and subsea leak detection

• The coastal oil facilities are places of potential crude oil spills.

• The early detection of these leaks is difficult using fixed sensors.

• Thus, an early detection autonomous system can be of much interest to prevent the marine environment pollution by oil spills in pipelines, and minimize the time to respond to a spill, optimizing the efficiency of the means of containment and treatment of spills.

It is neccesary to:

Promote the development of our own technology “Made in Spain”.

Cooperate to identify the needs and opportunities to innovate.

Launch innovative projects promoted by tractor companies.
