OUR STUDENTS EXCEL cont.

Bunning Warehouse and Yates donate two new gardens to our school. The Green Team were really excited and fortunate to receive a visit from Adrienne and Dean from Bunning Warehouse. Bunnings along with Yates, kindly donated two garden beds, soil, manure, mulch and seedlings to set up the new beds directly outside our school canteen. The new gardens will be cared for by the Green Team and will help supply our school canteen with fresh salad produce.

The students eagerly helped Dean and Adrienne set up the gardens and plant the new seedlings. The new garden beds in the school’s blue and yellow colours look great! The team look forward to picking the harvest early in term 2.

Thank you to Bunnings Warehouse and Yates for their generous donation to our school! SCHOOL HAPPENINGS

Harmony Day On Wednesday, 18 March Pacific Palms Public School participated in Harmony Day celebrations. The focus of the day was 'Our Diversity is our Strength' with the theme of stop, think and consider others. The assembly was a great success

with students embracing multiculturalism by dressing in a huge range of cultural attire. Children chose outfits with thought and creativity. The French and English reading of “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, what do you see?” was fantastic and enjoyed by all. Thank you to K/1C, Naomi and Saul for adding a fun and meaningful element to our celebration and to Ms Godfree for organising the event.

PARENTING TIPS FROM SUE COLDITZ, SCHOOL COUNSELLOR Pocket Money Why give pocket money? Helps kids learn to manage money. Helps kids make choices eg waiting and saving up to buy what they really want (perhaps negotiate to bank

a portion and spend a portion). Gives them some independence and sense of importance as a family member. It can help minimize conflict over not doing set chores as pocket money can be reduced if not done.

Should pocket money be earned? As the parent you may decide to give some pocket money for chores and provide opportunities to earn a little more for extra jobs eg washing the car. How much pocket money? What you can afford!! Check the ‘going rate’ with other parents. Consider what it is expected to cover eg canteen lunch, saving…….include an amount for them to do

whatever they choose. Amount usually increases as the child gets older and takes more responsibility.

Reminders: 1. Make sure you are consistent and reliable about paydays. 2. Be careful not to criticize their choices if you are not happy with them (giving pocket money and then

telling them exactly what they must use it for does not develop their self-confidence and independence). 3. It is not helpful to use ‘withdrawal of pocket money’ as a punishment for poor behaviour – can lead to

stealing and/or resentment. 4. Allow your child to make some mistakes. 5. At what age to start is a parent decision – see what has worked with other parents (8 years of age is

suggested by some as the earliest to start). 6. Give approval or maybe a bonus for successful managing/saving. 7. Remember pocket money can be a valuable way of teaching your child responsibility.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPALS

New Classroom Our newest classroom has now been completed and handed over to us. 1/2B are starting to use the space and settle in. The furniture is due to arrive early next term. Thanks to the P&C fundraising we will also now be able to purchase and install an interactive digital display (IT projector) in the classroom. Student Attendance There is a direct link between students’ regular attendance at school and learning success. Generally, when students attend school consistently, their academic results tend to reflect their potential. When a student’s attendance is inconsistent or poor, learning tends to be less than expected. As Principal of Pacific Palms Public School, we are required to inform parents and students of the attendance requirements. In short, parents are required to: • ensure that their children attend school regularly; • explain the absences of their children from school promptly and within seven days to the school; and • take measures to resolve attendance issues involving their children. ** A reminder that if your child will be away on a holiday or travel during school time, you are required to complete an ‘Application for Leave – Travel’ form, which is then approved by the Principal who will issue you with a ‘Certificate for Leave - Travel’. ** Staff We welcome Annelie Robinson to KT until 6 May while Patricia Tuft is in Canada. Happy travelling to Carmel Rigby who will be on leave for Terms Two and Three while she travels around Australia. Welcome back Ebony Notting who will be teaching K/1C during this time. A special congratulations to Ebony who was married late last year while in the UK and is now Ms Struwe. ANZAC Commemorative Service Today Mrs Merchant and the school Captains, Oscar and Sage, will travel to GLC – Forster Campus to attend the Great Lakes Learning Community ANZAC Service. The Support Team will attend the Pacific Palms Dawn Service at the Recky on ANZAC Day. Our own school ANZAC Day Assembly will be held on Friday, 29 April in the hall at 9:30 am.
