PACIFIC HIGHWAY OVERVIEW OF WOOLGOOLGA TO BALLINA UPGRADE

Representatives from the Woolgoolga to Ballina project team will present an overview of the Woolgoolga to Ballina Pacific Highway upgrade. AUGUST JABBERFEST WRAP Proceedings were opened by honorary auditor Warren Morrow chairing the Annual General Meeting attended by 126 members, which following the usual formalities resulted in David Thompson being elected President for the ensuing years backed by a strong executive and committee. Presentations were then made to Maree Burrows and David Abrahams in acknowledgment of their years of service on the committee and life membership was bestowed on Vreni Voigt for her many years as leader of many courses and interest groups. Members were provided details of the next outing for the Bushwalking group to Shelley Beach and David Abrahams sought expressions of interest in taking over his role of webmaster. Prior to the morning tea break, members were alerted to the informative display stands of the Armchair Travel, Chess, Bushwalking, Mahjong and Mens Shed groups. Following morning tea, members were entertained by Good Vibes singing group, a performance from the guitar group before the ukulele group took to the stage. Dorothy Hillis completed the morning’s entertainment with three readings from compositions by members of the Creative Writing group. The lucky chair prize was won by Colleen Morgan. David Thompson thanked members for their attendance, noted that next Jabberfest

would be held on Monday 12 September and then closed the meeting.

PRESIDENT’S LETTER…. Dear Members Thank you to everyone that attended the AGM and Jabberfest meeting in August. A special thanks to Warren Morrow, who presided over the elections and agreed to be our honorary auditor for the 2016-2017 financial year, and to all who stood for the committee. Thanks also to everyone who supported the nominations. Thank you to our newest committee member Glad Anderson for standing for the committee.

Following the meeting, Peter Sinfield realized that our regular committee meeting conflicted with another commitment and so decided to resign. However, a special thanks goes out to Peter as he then agreed to take on the Web Masters Job from David Abraham, in lieu of the committee’s membership position. At our initial board meeting, it was decided to invite Brian Carter if he would resume his membership of the committee to which he has agreed.

Unfortunately, it was a sad occasion in that we farewelled David Abraham from the committee and from the difficult job of getting the speakers programs working on the computer. Thank you David for your many years of up front work for U3A. No he is not leaving, just relaxing and enjoying the meetings from the audience and working at the Mens Shed. A beautifully crafted Lazy- Susan made by the Mens Shed was also presented at the AGM to Maree Burrows in recognition of her service to U3A.

I am keen to hear from any members on suggestions and both Mary-Lou and I would especially love to hear of any possible speakers. While I will be chairing the next two Jabberfests, we have decided that it is a good idea to continue rotating the task within the committee.

David Thompson

NUMBERS, NUMBERS, NUMBERS AT OUR SEPTEMBER JABBERFEST, Kevin Dixon will deliver a short 10- 15 minute talk on Numbers. There are many different types of numbers and without delving deeply into mathematics, he will explain the different types of numbers and their uses.

An example: A PERFECT number is one in which its factors, excluding itself, ADD to itself.

Q. Can you find the first two perfect numbers before the next meeting?

THE TABLECLOTH Beautiful story….makes you understand that things happen for a reason. The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned to their first ministry, to reopen a church in suburban Brooklyn, arrived in early October excited about their opportunities. When they saw their church, it was very run down and needed much work. They set a goal to have everything done in time to have their first service on Christmas Eve. They worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls, painting, etc. and on Dec 18 were ahead of schedule and just about finished. On Dec 19 a terrible tempest – a driving rainstorm – hit the area and lasted for two days. On the 21st, the pastor went over to the church. His heart sank when he saw that the roof had leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, beginning about head high. The pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, and not knowing what else to do but postpone the Christmas Eve service, headed home. On the way he noticed that a local business was having a flea market type sale for charity so he stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, handmade, ivory coloured, crocheted tablecloth with exquisite work, fine colours and a Cross embroidered right in the centre. It was just the right size to cover up the hole in the front wall. He bought it and headed back to the church. By this time it had started to snow. An older woman running from the opposite direction was trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor invited her to wait in the warm church for the next bus 45 minutes later. She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. Then he noticed the woman walking down the centre aisle. Her face was like a sheet. “Pastor,” she asked, “where did you get that tablecloth?” The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria. The woman could hardly believe it as the pastor told how he had just gotten the Tablecloth. The woman explained that before the war she and her husband were well-to-do people in Austria. When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. Her husband was going to follow her the next week. She was captured, sent to prison and never saw her husband or her home again. The pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth; but she made the pastor keep it for the church. The pastor insisted on driving her home as that was the least he could do. She lived on the other side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn for the day for a housecleaning job. What a wonderful service they had on Christmas Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the spirit were great. At the end of the service, the pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door and many said that they would return. One older man, whom the pastor recognized from the neighbourhood, continued to sit in one of the pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he wasn’t leaving. The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on the front wall because it was identical to one that his wife had made years ago when they lived in Austria before the war. How could there be two tablecloths so much alike? He told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he forced his wife to flee for her safety, and he was supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home again all the years in between. The pastor asked him if he would allow him to take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten Island and to the same house where the pastor had taken the woman three days earlier. He helped the man climb the three flights of stairs to the woman’s apartment, knocked on the door and he saw the greatest Christmas reunion he could ever imagine.

LUNCHEON – FIVE MILE HOTEL On 28 August, a beautiful sunny Sunday, 15 hungry souls gathered for a very enjoyable and sociable lunch at Five Mile Hotel on the Armidale Road. Everyone enjoyed their meals and the gourmet pie, chicken and herb on the day, was beautiful. Those who partook of the cherry ripe cheesecake and the banana, chocolate and liqueur cheesecake were very happy with their choices, no crumbs remaining on their plates. Fiona Duggan
