What Happened In October?

HILLSIDE-HOJO C o m m u n i t y

Here in Hillside-hojo we realized that we were stronger than some hurricane, so we put our heads together and some programs to help us get through the times!

We had everything going great! We had breakfast, late night snack, and even had sometime to watch a movie in our basement as a community. Together with our lovely Hall Council, for breakfast we made Pancakes for our hall. Then later that night we made our late night snack of Fried Oreos, which seems to be a favorite round these parts! And then finally we had our impromptu movie which was perfect for a windy scary night because we watched Paranormal Activity 2! Then,  we  couldn’t  get  enough  so  we  followed  that  up  with  Paranormal  Activity 3!!!

Overall we had Sandy under control, and managed to have some fun at the same time!

What  we  did  to  make  sure  Sandy  didn’t  rain  on  everyone’s parade!

Egg Toss: Kelly Fisher hosted her Egg Toss program Saturday, October 20th. The Egg Toss competition was fun for everyone. 15 of the Townhouses finest egg-tossers came out to take a shot at becoming the Townhouses Egg Toss Champions. However, after a fierce but friendly competition Resident Assistant Kris and his housemate Khari won!! Both have agreed to defend their title at anytime as ETC of

the Townhouse Community.

Clutch: Kris conducted his third annual “Clutch” Program in Townhouse 17. The event was a great educating tool in terms of getting residents be mindful of transportation after a night of drinking.

This program was a step in the right the direction to help eradicate drinking and driving in the Pace University Community. 30 plus resident participated and Lucio’s fine cuisine was served.

Pumpkin Decorating: In the spirit of Halloween, Aziza and Michele hosted a Pumpkin

Martin Hall’s first annual greenhouse was officially opened during our Building Wide Program for the month of October with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The greenhouse is as complete as it can be right now and the residents are really excited about it so far. The fish tank addition created a lot of buzz by the residents and they like go-ing in and feeding the fish. A tre-mendous amount of residents came out to hear the ribbon cutting speech and watch the green-house officially open as they

Jonathan Baez- Born August 21, 1991 in Queens, NY. Jonathan is in his second year as an RA here at Pace Uni-versity in Martin Hall. Jonathan is the 3rd floor male RA and deals with a larger number of residents than most. Baez is an intricate part of our staff in Martin Hall. He is always there for us when we have questions and problems and his experience as a second year RA in this building makes him a leader for us.

Madden Football and Your Carbon Footprint- On Friday September 19th, RA John Tripodi held his Madden tournament event. The event drew a large crowd of male resi-dents and led to some heated games of Madden football. While the resi-dents engaged in gaming they also received knowl-edge about the carbon footprint each of them leaves on the atmos-phere every day here at Pace. It was a transcen-dent program and the residents loved it.

The Presidential Election- Martin Hall has done a lot of work with sustainability year but our real aim is engagement. We have strived to get our residents engaged in the Presiden-tial Election and in the debates leading up to it. Our next Building Wide Program will be on November 6th in the evening and will be an event all about the election. It will include many stations of information and entertain-ment and will be focused mainly on watching the festivities unfold.– This event occurred and 60 students participated.

Dow Hall Events

From RA Pavel and RA Chris: Chris and I hosted the event Assassin. We had residents come down and write their name on a piece of paper. Then each of the residents picked a piece or paper with a name on it, which was their target. The purpose of the game was to assassinate your target by placing a sticker on them. The catch was that someone was after you too and you didn’t know who it was. Once you killed your target he or she would pass down their target to you and you would have a new target. The winner of the game was the last person standing. The game allowed residents to get to know one another because they had to know who their target was in order to assassinate them. We had 21 residents show up to the event. Building Wide: Dow Hall hosted our first Open Mic event in October. We had about 15 residents come and perform and many more come to watch. We had some Irish Step-dancing, singing, and poetry reading. Some of the residents even helped out to hand out cotton candy, sno cones, and popcorn.

RA Sammi and RA Chris: RA Sammi and Chris hosted an educational Trick-or-Treat event this past weekend. Residents started in Dow and visited the other residence halls on the Briarcliff campus to pick up candy. Each of the candies had facts about alcohol safety. Ra’s Sammi and Chris debriefed about the alcohol facts when everyone returned to Dow. RA Tamika: On October 19th at 8pm I had my event called "Do U know Pace U?" I had 27 or so residents come, even people from other buildings came by. I made cupcakes for everyone and then during the event I had them decorate their cupcake however they wanted. While they were doing that i asked them questions about Pace to see what they knew and what they didn’t know. This also gave them a good opportunity to ask questions about things they may not know. It was a good chance for my first year experience students to make sure they were current on their knowledge of Pace University.

North Hall - October

Our 2 hall events were very successful and had great turnouts.

OcSober Fest was a mini carnival that had Mocktails, Cotton Candy,

Popcorn, and Twisted Twister. Twisted Twister was definitely one of

the crowd favorites. Residents played twister while wearing beer

goggles and had a really fun time. The residents also got the Pie-the-

RAs and RDs. RA Meg, Jordan, Mike, and RD Jen all got pied multiply

times by residents. Although they may have had whipped cream all

over their faces, we did raise over $30 for Breast Cancer for their

efforts. The Haunted Hall was also a success. We scared our residents

as we took them through haunted rooms through our hall.

Our Community

The North Hall community has gotten stronger as we finished our second month of the semester. Class status is no issue here. Everyone gets along no matter what the age. We as a staff also make sure not to take advantage of our positions and bond with our residents on a more personal level.
