For the first time this year the orchestra will present as many as eight concerts PAC Renews Contract with Jersey Shore Pops at The PAC. More than 6,000 music lovers have attended the concerts in the first two years and it is anticipated that the mark will exceed 10,000 in 2013, Aspelll said. “The popularity of this 25 piece high quality or- chestra and its conductor has made it possible for us to come together for a bigger and longer season, “ said Aspell. “ The orchestra has been a key attraction in the arts community in and beyond Cape May County and we are pleased that our arts center has been the focal point for bringing its music to the area, not only in the summer but beyond that when the arts tend to slow down in this resort county.” Aspell said it is a tribute to the orchestra that it is able to draw large audienc- es to the 1,000 seat theater in the face of competition from the nearby casinos. “We do not have the financial resources of the big gambling hotels, but we are encouraged by our box office results and the possibility of grants to help the funding. As it is so often said in the arts, the best way to support them is to attend them, but often, as in the case of the Jersey Shore Pops, there is a need for supplemental funding to make it all happen.” The Jersey Shore Pops was founded by Gentille in 2009 and was intro- duced to audiences at the performing arts center as a trial to see whether South Jersey residents, especially those in Cape May County, would support such a ven- ture. The response was so encouraging that Aspell initially booked five con- certs for each season. The big band orchestra with a string band section, is mod- eled after the orchestras of the Frank Sinatra era. Gentille, originally from Pacific Palisades, Califor- nia, now resides in Cape May County when she’s not performing on the high sea on cruise ships or in mainland China where she holds the world record for having presented more concerts than any foreign performer. The 2013 season opens at PAC on June 29 at 7:30 p.m. with a performance featuring Irish tenor Colin Fitzmaurice. CAPE MAY - Area sing- ers, musicians, history buffs and those who want a fun day will enjoy a very special musical event planned for Feb. 9 in Cape May. All are invited to a Shape Note or Sacred Harp day of song and potluck lunch under the leadership of Aldo Ce- resa from Brooklyn, NY. For singers or those with an interest in history, mu- sical or otherwise, or just for fun, this is a day not to be missed. The event will take place at Cape May’s Episcopal Church of the Advent at Washington and Franklin Streets from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Shape note singing is a kind of four-part a cap- pella music (without instru- ments) that was popular around the time Cape May was first being settled. Cape May resident Vicki Watson helped organize the day and invited Mr. Ceresa to lead. She noted that this music is about participation, not perfor- mance. Each of the four parts sit facing each other in a “hollow square”. Men and women can sing the same part an octave apart. All are welcome, whatever your interest or singing skill. There is not separate seating for an audience, but listeners will be able to enjoy the experience and participate, seated in the pews and singing the melody. The term “Shape Note” refers to the special way the music is written, with notes in different shapes to make sight reading easier. The music is sometimes called “Sacred Harp” be- cause the most widely-used collection of shape note songs today are in oblong hymnals called “The Sa- cred Harp”. The term “sacred harp” refers to the human voice. The tradi- tion, originally from New England and the American South, almost died out until revived over the last few decades under the leader- ship of dedicated singers and leaders, including Aldo Old Time Singing Event Set in Cape May Ceresa who will lead the Cape May event. The day will begin at 10:00 a.m. in Church of the Advent with a work- shop to explain and prac- tice shape note singing. There will be a potluck lunch at noon for every- one attending. Willing and able local singers are invited to bring an item to the potluck to share with another, since many of the singers will be com- ing from a long distance. After lunch everyone will gather in the church again to sing. A free-will offering will be taken to defray expens- es. Otherwise there will be no cost. We’ll be sing- ing from the 1991 Den- son edition of The Sacred Harp, and books will be available for loan or pur- chase. Episcopal Church of the Advent, located at Washington and Franklin Streets in historic Cape May is delighted to host this event. Call Advent’s church office at 609-884- 3065 with questions and to let the organizers know you are coming so that we will have enough hymnals available. NORTH WILDWOOD -- The Twelfth Step House will host their annual “Sober Valentine Dance Party” on Sat., Feb. 9 from 8 until 11:30 p.m. at North Wildwood Community Center. Friend in Need to Host Super Bash PartyAVALON -- Friend In

Need will host its 10th annual Super Bash Party at the Princeton Bar Feb. 3. Doors will open at 4 p.m. Tickets are currently on sale for $25, or $30 at the door.

Friend In Need is a local not-for-profi t organization, created to assist families in need within Cape May County. Over the past 10 years, Friend In Need has raised almost $500,000, and helped a number of local families. For 2012, the organization was able

to help 15 families with more than $60,000 in as-sistance.

Super Bash X will consist of food and beverages for all attendees as well as a Silent Auction, door prizes, raffles and big screened televisions to watch the big game. Featured Silent Auction items include a signed Bruce Springsteen guitar with Certifi cate of Authenticity, as well as a 76ers ticket package for four complete with a signed Evan Turner jersey.

“We could not have

come close to such a land-mark, without the contin-ued generosity of our spon-sors and donors who have helped to support Friend In Need.,” said President Bob Moran.

Sponsorship and dona-

tion opportunities are avail-able. For more informa-tion, please visit Friend In Need’s website at www.friendinneednj.org or email the committee at [email protected].

OCEAN CITY - Ocean City has made a remarkable comeback from Hurricane Sandy. The boardwalk and downtown are in good shape and we were able to accommodate 8,000 visitors during our New Year’s Eve First Night Cel-ebration.

Thanks to the tireless work of OCNJCARE, our super volunteer organiza-tion, its community part-ners and the City, this basic recovery was made possible. These groups con-tinue to provide assistance to those who need help and will do so until the job is completed.

It is very important that we get the word out to our visitors that we are open and ready to accommodate them now and for the up-coming season. Our Tour-ism industry revenues help keep the City tax base in check and also contribute substantially to the State’s Treasury and tax base.

We have already held a press conference with area media explaining that Ocean City is prepared to accommodate visitors. We

asked folks at First Night to spread the word that Ocean City is open when they returned home. Now we are asking you.

There is still a percep-tion among many through-out our marketing area that the entire Jersey Shore is devastated. When you talk to out of town friends, let them know that we are in business. Email your friends. If you are on face book or any other social media, post it on your page. If you tweet, by all means tweet it. If you are in business include this information in your adver-tisements and correspon-dence, in your telephone conversations etc. Word of mouth is one of the most effective methods of com-munication. Please pass the word.

Also keep in mind that in February, the Army Corps of Engineers will be back for their regular visit to dredge our beaches and replace sand to upgrade our beaches.

Please remember that if you would like to assist OCNJCARE in its on-going efforts you may send a check to OCNJCARE, Po Box 807, Ocean City, N.J. 08226 or drop it off at Ocean City Home Bank, 10th and Asbury Ave.
