PICASSO
Picasso was one
of the greatest
artists of his
time.
He was born in
1881 and died in
1973.

~PICASSO’S NAME IS A SERIES OF THE NAMES OF SAINTS AND
RELATIVES.
PICASSO
Picasso’s image
as an artist is
one of infinite
diversity
including
sculpture,
ceramics,
paintings and
stage design.
PICASSO ALSO WROTE POETRY. BETWEEN 1935
AND 1959, PICASSO WROTE
OVER 300 POEMS.
THE BLUE PERIOD(1901 – 1904)
This is called, ‘Picasso’s Blue Period’ because
many of his paintings in that time were in the
shades of blue and blue-green.
The subjects of these paintings included
prostitutes and beggars.
Blindness and poverty were a central part of
this theme of his paintings.

THE ROSE PERIOD
(1905 – 1907)
This period of work
is called, ‘Picasso’s
Rose Period,’ in
which his paintings
became cheerful
with the use of
orange and pink
colors.
THE AFRICAN PERIOD(1907 – 1909)
This is called ‘Picasso’s African-Influenced Period,’ where
Picasso’s drawings were inspired by African artifacts.
A good example of this period goes by the name of “Les
Demoiselles d’ Avignon.”
This painting actually shook the art world. The story goes
that he hid the painting for a very long time & as he
predicted, the painting definitely created a stir when it was
first showcased.

CUBISM( 1 9 0 9 – 1 9 1 2 )
This style of painting was
developed along with Georges
Braque and was characterized by
the use of monochrome brown
colors.
EXAMPLE OF CUBISM
IN APRIL OF 1937, DURING THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR,
PICASSO CREATED ONE OF HIS MOST FAMOUS WORKS. “GUERNICA” IS A HUGE MURAL PAINTING THAT
DEPICTED THE NAZI BOMBING OF THE SPANISH TOWN BY
THE SAME NAME. THE MURAL IS 11 FEET TALL AND MORE
THAN 25 FEET WIDE.

IN HIS LATER YEARS PICASSO TURNED TO
CREATIONS OF FANTASY AND COMIC INVENTION.
HE WORKED IN SCULPTURE, CERAMICS
AND IN THE GRAPHIC ARTS, PRODUCING THOUSANDS OF SUPERB DRAWINGS,
ILLUSTRATIONS AND STAGE DESIGN.
PICASSO OFTEN SAID THAT HE WAS
NOT AFRAID OF DEATH, BUT WAS OF
ILLNESS. HE DIED AT THE
AGE OF 91 DUE TO A HEART ATTACK.
ON THE DAY THAT HE DIED, APRIL 8TH 1973, HE AND HIS
WIFE JACQUELINE, WERE ENTERTAINING FRIENDS AT
DINNER. HIS LAST WORDS WERE,
“DRINK TO ME, DRINK TO MY HEALTH, YOU KNOW I CAN’T DRINK ANYMORE.”
Picasso’s paintings can
be found in museums
all over the world.
The Picasso Museum in
Barcelona, Spain
claims to have the
largest collection of his
artwork.
