Tunnels are monitored by Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras 24 hours a day and incident response teams are on stand-by. Dangerous goods vehicles are prohibited from using Sydney’s tunnels. Variable speed limits operate on the network and are enforced. When driving into Sydney major tunnels: Turn on your radio and headlights Take of your sunglasses (if not prescription glasses) Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front and avoid changing lanes Always check electronic message boards where available Sydney’s tunnels are required to meet air quality standards set to protect public health. However, closing your windows and switching your vehicle ventilation to re-circulate will further reduce your exposure to vehicle emissions. If stopped in trafc: Listen to your radio (emergency broadcasts cut into normal stations) Turn of your engine if instructed. If your vehicle breaks down (or you crash): If possible drive out of the tunnel, otherwise pull into a breakdown bay or the side of the lane Switch on your hazard lights, stay in your vehicle and wait for help to arrive. Cameras monitor trafc and assistance will be sent to tow your vehicle If you need to call for help use the emergency phones. They automatically identify your location in the tunnel. The tunnel control room will contact emergency services CAUTION – before you get out of your vehicle, check for approaching trafc before leaving your vehicle. If you see smoke coming from a tunnel or you are warned of a fre in a tunnel: Do not enter. Use a surface route diversion if possible If you have to stop outside the tunnel, wait for instructions from tunnel personnel, emergency services or the Transport Management Centre (TMC). In the unlikely event of your vehicle catching fre in a tunnel: If possible drive out of the tunnel, otherwise pull into a breakdown bay or the side of the lane and turn of the engine Check for trafc before leaving your vehicle Find the nearest fre extinguisher and try to put the fre out If you cannot extinguish the fre, use an emergency phone located on the wall of the tunnel to contact the tunnel control room Follow instructions given to you or if in doubt, leave via the nearest available emergency exit or tunnel exit If you need assistance, put your hazard lights on and ask for assistance from others. If you see a fre or smoke in a tunnel: Listen to your radio Follow any instructions provided via the radio, electronic message boards, tunnel personnel, emergency services or the TMC. If instructed to evacuate: Stop vehicle and turn engine of Move away from any smoke or fre and leave via the nearest available emergency exit or tunnel exit. Do not stay in your vehicle once instructed to evacuate If instructed to evacuate the tunnel and you need assistance, put your hazard lights on and ask for assistance from others CAUTION – emergency exit door may lead to an area of moving trafc.
