“M onsters Are Us” examines the age-old

question: If you were a monster, what kind would you be?

That’s one of the many after-school and weekend offerings at Uptown Stories, a writing workshop for children. Young participants can also write and draw comics, play with poems and hike through the woods and find inspiration in medieval masterpieces.

When Kate Reuther taught in New York City middle schools, she saw that her students found writing more of a chore than a joy.

Essays were taught in a standard, plodding way. “It felt more like a test, or a puzzle, rather than an extension of their voice or their imagination,” she said.

richer experiences. She grew up in a world of books. Her father worked in children’s book publishing and her mother is a photographer. She went on to get a Masters of Fine Arts in writing. “Books were always a place of joy and inspiration and creativity,” she said.

Reuther founded Uptown Stories in 2011 so children could write in a way that matters to them. Many of the after-school

sessions run for 10 weeks. Tuition is pay-what-you-can.

Classes are designed for specific ages, starting at 8 up to age 16. “We really focus on middle school children intentionally,” she said. “It is such a chaotic and transformative time.”

Their winter classes are a fun and fanciful mix of fiction, poetry, cartooning, monsters and beasts. Classes are kept small, with a maximum of 12 students, so each child receives special attention.

“That way teachers can talk to students about their writing,” Reuther said. Instead of telling children they need to fix a problem, they ask children what they want

As parents picked up their children from the Mama

Tingo Childcare Learning Center another family stood outside in the cold, waiting for their son to come home.

Rhony Ramos, 30, was wearing a black coat when left home at approximately 6:20 a.m. on Nov. 28.

He never made it to his job on the Lower East Side. Calls to his phone go unanswered.

Since then his family has mounted an all-out campaign to search for Ramos, who turned 30 just days after he went missing. They have covered the city with posters alerting everyone to Ramos’s disappearance and contact information. Now they are inviting the community to help in a search for Rhony.

At a vigil for her son outside of the childcare center, Ramona Ramos stood silently as others spoke. Rosita Romero, Executive Director of the Dominican

“Disrupt, dismantle and change”

I t’s the elephant in the room.

Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza described segregation within the school system as an entrenched and often divisive issue, but said the city must acknowledge and grapple with it.

The introduction of free, full-day preschool education in public schools has helped advance fairness in the city, argued Carranza.

“In New York City, we have almost added two full grade levels for all of our children, which is a game changer,” he stated.

The programs mean that early education is accessible to all families, not just those who can pay for preschool, he said.

“3-K and Pre-K are the linchpin of fairness in our city, of giving every child an equal shot at reaching their potential. It doesn’t matter how much their parents make,” said Carranza,

who delivered the address on December 6 at Teachers College’s annual Phyllis L. Kossoff Lecture on Education and Policy.

He called Teachers College a “beacon for the nation in so many ways” that was a natural partner for the Department of Education (DOE) in terms of advancing equity.

Carranza said that enrollment in public schools was up this school year, and 1,600 more students enrolled in college over the previous year. He touted the city’s goal of an

He said housing and school segregation are often a byproduct of living in large urban areas and driven by forces that go back many decades.

“But a public school system should represent the entire city it serves,” he said. “In New York City, just as other cities I’ve worked in, that is often not the case.”

Carranza offered his thoughts during a keynote presentation at Teachers College at Columbia University. Founded in 1880, the school is the first and largest graduate school of education in the country.

I t was different in 1996.

“A lot of drugs, a lot of rats, a lot of empty stores,” says Maribel Núñez.

The co-owner of Albert’s Mofongo House on the corner of Dyckman Street and Broadway said much has changed from the business’s first days over two decades ago when it was one of the few restaurants in Inwood.

Despite the difficulties, she and her husband Alberto have kept the 24-hour Dominican eatery going.

“We’re part of that community that’s cleaned up [the area],” said Maribel. “We stuck it out, and now they want to give people the boot.”

When they renewed the restaurant’s lease last year, the rent jumped from $24,000 to $34,000 per month, Maribel said, speaking just a few feet from the intersection where protestors who rallied in August against the rezoning were arrested in acts of civil disobedience.

“It’s because of what’s going on in the neighborhood,” she said. “Every year, rent goes up about $1,000. It’s good for us that we have a new lease, but eventually we might not be able to stay.”

Maribel and Alberto have joined on as

plaintiffs in a new lawsuit as part of the first legal challenge to the city’s planned rezoning of Inwood.

Community stakeholders announced on Mon., Dec. 10th that they are suing the city over the rezoning, which was approved by the City Council on August 8.

The Article 78 lawsuit, filed in New York State Supreme Court, argues that there were flaws and omissions in the impact studies conducted by the city, and asks the court to determine that the decision for rezoning was “arbitrary and capricious.”

advocacy group Northern Manhattan is Not For Sale (NMN4S), and other residents and business owners from Inwood. It was filed by attorney Michael Sussman on behalf of Inwood Legal Action (ILA), a constituent group of NMN4S.

The happiness industrial complex promises that

bliss will be found when we get our eating, exercise, sleep, journaling, weight, complexion, clothing, and all our Christmas shopping exactly right, including remembering our own reusable grocery sacks.

And beyond the material routes to happiness, Amazon produces over 40,000 hits for "happiness self-help" books promising to assist us in finding fulfillment and becoming self-actualized. Our society is so obsessed with happiness there's even a journal you can buy, for $34, to keep track of the "best me." With all the hype, I'm feeling like happiness is becoming another item on my to-do list; that can't be what happiness is all about.

1. $11 billion industry. Happiness has become the perfect consumer product. Best of all from the marketers' perspective: you can never have too much. Is it money well spent? All indications are that paying for happiness is not working. The happiness industry – including self-help books, self-actualization retreats, and corporate

expenditures promoting happiness, as epitomized by Google's Jolly Good Fellow, has exploded in the past decade. Chade-Meng Tan has gained renown as Google’s personal and spiritual development guru. Unfortunately, the return on investment does not seem to be paying off in the U.S. where happiness has been falling over the same period of time.

2. The holy grail. The pursuit of happiness is as old as humankind, but the multi-billion dollar happiness industry is a new phenomenon that comes at a very high price. Can we really buy and consume happiness, just like champagne? And the idea that we are not well unless we are in a state of perpetual happiness is fundamentally flawed logic. The data suggest that the happiness industry is inadvertently contributing to a seedbed of dysphoria. In fact, a recent study indicated that people without any mental disorder make up a bigger percentage of those in therapy today. This is a complex data point, but at least in part, it suggests that people who are basically well are not happy.

3. Social media fans the flames. Is everyone else really happier than I am? A lot has been written about the negative effects of social media. One way that social media may be specifically contributing to unhappiness lies in the normal and healthy process of social comparison that gets skewed online.

We are social animals, and we understand ourselves in social context. What are the values and

practices of my community? My family? What do my peers think and do and

value? Who do I respect? What are the cultural messages about love and

meaning and power? These questions help us navigate our own paths in life. We have an extensive science on how we come to understand ourselves through this process of social comparison. The problem is that

online messaging is inherently narrow and biased – to the point of being dishonest – and from social media to online advertising, individuals and industry are in a happiness competition with every post.

4. Mental health vs. happiness. There is still an overabundance of fear and stigma associated with talking about mental health. I see it in the many conversations I have had with private industry leaders who want to

T he ministries have found their match.

The City University of New York (CUNY) and State University of New York (SUNY) have signed joint agreements with the Dominican government – specifically its Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic (MINERD) and its Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology of the Dominican Republic (MESCYT) – to enhance academic collaborations.

The agreements — established between CUNY, SUNY, the State Education Department, and the Dominican government ministries that oversee K-12 and higher education — will enable colleges and universities to develop academic exchange programs, teacher trainings, and collaborative research.

Brokered by Dominican-born Congressman Adriano Espaillat, the collaboration is expected to benefit more than 40,000 CUNY and SUNY students who are of Dominican descent.

On Fri., Dec. 7, CUNY and SUNY leaders joined with Espaillat, Dominican Republic Consul General Carlos Castillo and education officials from the Dominican Republic to sign a memorandum of understanding formalizing the partnership at the SUNY Global Center.

“Education plays a critical role in upward mobility for students and teachers, and this holds especially true for vulnerable and low-income communities,” Espaillat said. “It remains critical that we work together to ensure a solid foundation for innovation, progress, and achievement to better prepare our students and teachers for a global competitive society today and in the future.”

Each New York university system will enter into an independent agreement with each Dominican ministry, with the memorandum of understanding providing a framework for future arrangements between the individual universities and colleges in each system.

Participating in the signing ceremony were CUNY Board of Trustees Chair William C. Thompson Jr., CUNY Interim Chancellor Vita C. Rabinowitz, SUNY Board of Trustees Chairman H. de Educación Superior, Ciencia y Tecnología de República Dominicana (MESCYT), para mejorar las colaboraciones académicas.

“The city’s top-down approach to rezoning has failed to take into account the perspectives of the very members of the communities who would be affected by the major changes that this rezoning would cause,” Simpson stated.

The rezoning plan would increase area density and the levels of residential and commercial development within a 60-block section of the neighborhood.

At a press conference on Monday outside of State Supreme Court, activists were joined by Congressman Adriano Espaillat and State Senator-elect Robert Jackson.

“This is the beginning of pushback against rezoning in Inwood,” remarked Espaillat, who said the rezoning would cause “massive displacement” of working class people in Northern Manhattan.

“It will further contribute to segregating this city among income lines,” he said.

Espaillat said the 12,000 preferential rent leases in the four zip codes of Washington Heights and Inwood were especially vulnerable.

“We feel that the small number of so-called affordable apartments that are going to be produced are just a drop in the bucket, and what we’re really going to see is a

major push for market rate housing,” he said, noting that there would be additional lawsuits to come, as advocates attempt to battle the rezoning efforts.

Simpson said that during the Universal Land Use Review Process (ULURP), advocates called on the city to study the rezoning’s impact on preferential rents.

“The city said there was no public data,” he said. “Yet, when the city put out its Point of Agreement on the rezoning, one of their promises was to put out more tenant advocates and tenant lawyers in Inwood and they were going to target those people on buildings with preferential rents.”

“So, they have the data. They just refused to take a look at it,” he remarked.

Jackson pointed out that around 20,000 people moved out of Community Board 12’s jurisdiction between 2000 and 2010.

“You may ask, where did they go, and why did they leave? It was mainly because the rents were too high for them to afford,” he said. “This is a working class community and we want to try to maintain the type of community that we need, and that’s what this fight is all about.”

Jon Yeung, owner of U-Like Chinese Restaurant and one of the plaintiffs on the lawsuit, said he is concerned that he will be unable to renew his lease when it expires, as landlords will be increasing rents substantially or creating new buildings based on the rezoning.

“There’s concern that they’re going to tear down the buildings and make new ones,” he said. “For businesses, there are no real protections there.”

Ted Freed, a 30-year resident of Inwood, said the city’s ULURP process, which is part

of all rezoning initiatives, rings hollow in its attempts at community engagement.

“You have the ULURP process to make the people think they have a voice,” he remarked. “But in the end, the city isn’t really listening. And City Councilmembers fall in line with what the local representative wants.”

City Councilmember Ydanis Rodríguez, who represents the district and backed the rezoning, defended the plan as a way to spur economic growth and bring a large number of affordable units to the neighborhood.

“I supported a responsible and contextual rezoning because I believe it will catapult economic development in the technology, health, science industries while creating a Latino food destination and good paying jobs for the working and middle classes

“Monsters Are Us” examina la antigua pregunta de: si fueras un

monstruo, ¿qué tipo serías?

Esa es una de las muchas ofertas para después de la escuela y los fines de semana en Uptown Stories, un taller de escritura para niños. Los jóvenes participantes también pueden escribir y dibujar cómics, jugar con poemas, caminar por el bosque y encontrar inspiración en obras maestras medievales.

Cuando Kate Reuther enseñaba en las escuelas secundarias de la ciudad de Nueva York, vio que a sus alumnos les parecía que escribir era más una tarea que una alegría.

Los ensayos se realizaban de una manera estándar, laboriosa. “Se sentían más como una prueba, o un rompecabezas, en lugar de una extensión de su voz o su imaginación”, dijo.

Reuther sabía que los niños deberían tener experiencias más ricas. Ella creció en un mundo de libros. Su padre trabajaba en publicación de libros infantiles y su madre es fotógrafa. Ella llegó a obtener una maestría en Bellas Artes en escritura. “Los libros siempre fueron un lugar de alegría, inspiración y creatividad”, dijo.

Reuther fundó Uptown Stories en 2011 para que los niños pudieran escribir de una manera que les importara. Muchas de las sesiones después de la escuela duran 10 semanas. La cuota es pague-lo-que-pueda.

In “Beasts and Battles,” children draw from their favorite myths and learn simple fight choreography and vocabulary from a fencing instructor. Participants in “The Art of Poetry” hike through Fort Tryon Park and write about art at The Cloisters. “Sensory Poetry” is a one-day workshop geared toward neuro-diverse learners. “That’s for kids who really can’t sit still,” said Reuther. It’s Your Thing, for ages 12 through 16, is an advanced workshop where children develop their own unique projects.

“Children work harder when they have a personal stake in the writing,” she said.

Reuther said writing fiction helps children that struggle with school essays. “I want children to explore their inner voice, where they could tell stories the way they wanted tell them, much like a professional writer.”

The collaborative nature of small classes is refreshing for young people who get to meet students from other schools and different backgrounds. Reuther said children can sometimes be trapped by their own peer groups. Kids known at their own school for liking sports sometimes feel weird speaking passionately about poetry.

“At that moment it’s essential to give kids a wider experience of what other kids are like,” she said. “This is a chance to reinvent yourself and you’re coming in with a clean slate. You get to be as enthusiastic and passionate about your work as you really are.”

son’s disappearance. “She’s devastated,” she said. Her brother’s two small children are also worried. “They are asking why they haven’t gotten a call from daddy,” she said.

Franco said that they would appreciate if people could put up more posters or volunteer to look for Rhony. “We want answers,” she said.

Franco and her brother Eddie Ramos both said that police have not given the family any new information. They call frequently but rarely hear anything new. They fear that their brother’s case is no longer a priority. “I called them the other day, and the detective said he was traveling on another case,” said Eddie Ramos.

Councilmember Ydanis Rodríguez was also present at the vigil. He called on the detectives handling Rhony’s case to work on it exclusively. “I want the police to put the same resources behind this as they would a wealthy person,” he said.

Eddie Ramos has called hospitals and shelters in both New York and New Jersey to no avail. He said surveillance video shows his brother entered the A train station at the 175th Street entrance on the morning

of Nov. 28th. But he never made it to work. Calls to his cell phone go unanswered.

Family and friends have re-traced his steps but have not found any clues.

“I just want my brother to come home,” Eddie Ramos said. “We want him back for the holidays,” he said. “We want him back right now. For dinner.”

Cuidado Infantil Mamá Tingo, otra familia estaba afuera en el frío, esperando que su hijo regrese a casa.

Rhony Ramos, de 30 años, llevaba un abrigo negro cuando salió de su casa aproximadamente a las 6:20 a.m. el 28 de noviembre.

Nunca llegó a su trabajo en el Lower East Side. Las llamadas a su teléfono no tienen respuesta.

Desde entonces, su familia ha montado una campaña a tope para buscar a Ramos, quien cumplió 30 años solo días después de su desaparición. Han cubierto la ciudad con carteles que alertan a todos sobre la desaparición de Ramos y la información de contacto. Ahora están invitando a la comunidad a ayudar en la búsqueda de Rhony.

“La educación desempeña un papel crítico en la movilidad ascendente para estudiantes y maestros, y esto es especialmente cierto para las comunidades vulnerables y de bajos ingresos”, dijo Espaillat. “Sigue siendo fundamental que trabajemos juntos para garantizar una base sólida para la innovación, el progreso y los logros, a fin de preparar mejor a nuestros estudiantes y maestros para una sociedad global competitiva hoy y en el futuro”.

Cada sistema universitario de Nueva York entrará en un acuerdo independiente con cada ministerio dominicano, y el memorando de entendimiento proporcionará un marco para futuros acuerdos entre las universidades individuales y las facultades en cada sistema.

“We could establish new pipelines for students who receive an associate degree to continue working toward a bachelor’s degree. We could create channels to more easily enable students to pursue graduate studies,” she explained. “Through the sharing of knowledge and collaborations among faculty, we can help each other to master and apply needed forms of pedagogy in areas, such as the STEM fields, that have been identified for strategic impact. We can broaden students’ horizons of experience, give them the expectation, and eventually the assurance, that they can thrive in their professional lives wherever they chose to practice.”

Dominicans make up the largest ethnic group in the CUNY system.

Freed said that affordable housing promised by the city isn’t necessarily attainable for current Inwood income levels.

“You have a lot of deceptive promises being made,” he stated. “It creates an illusion that something positive is going on. They talk about affordable housing, but it’s not going to be affordable to the people who are here now.”

is about Hamilton Heights, this is about Marble Hill, Kingsbridge,” said Espaillat, who noted that other neighborhood rezonings such as Williamsburg, Brooklyn resulted in heavy displacement of low-income tenants.

“Rezoning has not worked for working class people across the city of New York,” he said. “We’re going to fight back. We’re going to say, ‘You can’t do this to our neighborhood.’”

In July, a State Supreme Court judge ruled against a

similar legal challenge brought by East Harlem community stakeholders in an attempt to halt that neighborhood’s rezoning, which was unanimously approved by the City Council in late 2017.

In that lawsuit, advocates alleged that the city prepared an inadequate environmental impact statement, which estimated that fewer than 30 East Harlem residents were at risk of displacement as a result of the rezoning.

“All it takes is for one Councilmember, the one in the district, to go along with the big real estate plan, and they all follow suit. That’s why you have these votes of 51 to nothing for a rezoning,” he said.

Eisenbach said he’d prefer to see a system

For Maribel and Alberto Núñez, the effects of the rezoning speculation have been reverberating ominously for months now. She worries that the recent rent increase is only the beginning.

“You have to try to survive. Landlords know they’re not risking anything, because if you leave, they’ll find somebody else to come in and pay more,” she said.

The restaurant’s employees, mostly Dominicans from the neighborhood, frequently complain that their rent is too high, added Alberto.

“Now, it’s hard to survive,” he remarked. “We love this neighborhood, the diversity, but [if the rezoning goes through], I feel like that’s going to change.”

“If we don’t name it and understand it, we can’t fix it,” he said.

promote mental health at work. They know a healthy workforce is a good thing and that mental health problems are a leading cause of lost productivity, but they are concerned about alienating those they are trying to support if they talk about mental health too explicitly. I posit, however, that we have real, effective mental health interventions that produce real, effective returns on investment, and we will all benefit when we talk about and use them. I strongly believe that if industry leaders focus on mental health, it will be money well spent. When people are mentally healthy, they are able to engage more fully in all aspects of life, are more resilient, and are able to experience the range of human emotions, including happiness.

5. Sadness serves. Some of the happiness industry rhetoric sounds like a campaign driven to avoid feeling sad. Take Subaru's campaign about "love" for example. Like primary colors, we have primary emotions, and sadness is one of them. Real mental health comes with the capacity to know and feel our primary emotions of happiness, fear, and anger along with sadness (remember the masterful representation of these basic human emotions in Inside Out?). To be mentally healthy, engaged, and caring members of society, we need to know sadness as much as we need to know happiness.

This is the season of wishes for happiness – for happy holidays and many happy new years. I wish for all, myself included, much happiness. But more than that, and in the interest of mental health, my bigger wish is that we get the business of happiness in check to make room for the range of feelings that come with living life to its fullest, which will inevitably include real happiness (the kind that can't be purchased or found online).
