– What are differences between the experimental set-ups in the diagram?
– What are the key images/words in the question? (comparative?)
Analysing the Question
• Observe-Link-Connect
• Link
– What topic does the difference/keywords link to?
– Eg. Heat , Electricity, Photosynthesis …

Answering Techniques
• Comparison
• Claim-Evidence-Response (CER)
• Cause and Effect
• Useful techniques to use when answering open-ended questions
Comparison
• Comparison words must be used in an answer when there are at least two objects / experimental set-ups involved the question.
Example of comparative words posed • Shorter, warmer, Best… • Increases/ decreases… • More/ Most
Comparison
✔ X
There is more moisture in Set-up A than in Set-up B. or There was moisture in Set-up A but there was no moisture in Set-up B.
There is moisture in Set-up A. or There is no moisture in Set-up B.
C-E-R

Apply C-E-R
Feathers are poorer conductors of heat. The temperature of the water in Flask C increases at a slower rate that the water in Flask D. Poor conductors gain heat slower

Answer
• Cause: The increased Heat from the light bulb caused more water in Section A to evaporate to form water vapour. The increased amount of water vapour in the plastic container touches the cool inner surface of the metal sheet and condenses to form more water droplets.
• Effect: More water droplets then drip down from the metal sheet into Section B.
