Existing Embodiment - Overhead

Gallery Rail System

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s imaging department is currently using

the system shown above, an overhead rail system installed in the concrete

slab ceiling of the gallery.

How does the current system

work?

The system is effectively a large-scale scanner,

capable of imaging works at a higher

resolution than is possible with a single

capture.

● Ceiling-mounted

● Works are laid on the floor

● Moves camera to precise locations

● Captures a series of images

● Images are stitched to create larger image

Limitations Of Current System

● Immobile

● Limited camera traverse range

● Lighting fixed with respect to camera

● Permanently installed works cannot be

imaged

● Manual control of camera position

Project Goals

Design and build a new mobile camera &

lighting rig consistent with the desired state:

● Aesthetically appealing and professional look

● Upright for imaging wall-mounted works

● Short setup & reconfiguration time

● Versatile for large and small works

● Safe for artwork and user

● Minimal maintenance

● Automated traversal

Project Deliverables

● Functional rig that is easy to use and

maintain ○ Will make the job of the photographers easier and

result in high quality repeatable images

● Documentation for use and maintenance of

rig

● Documentation of build process to aid in

future projects

Potential Uses

● Enables Met photographers to generate high

resolution prints for the museum and

customers.

● Imaging large, permanent installations

● Ultra high definition imaging of smaller works

● Imaging of sculpture

Negative Effects of Desired State

● Maintenance fees associated with wear

○ Simplify design to reduce potential points of wear

● Potential confusion in operation when turned
