A snow storm and reading week did not stop the S.M.I.L.E fun these past

two weeks. The Friday night crew went out to cheer on the Acadia

Axemen at the hockey game with red and blue face-paint

Thursday had some pool adventures, celebrat-ing Valentine’s Day.

Directors and leaders are getting ready for the last month of S.M.I.L.E. for the season with some great themed program days ahead; including various pool activi-ties, Around The World, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter at S.M.I.L.E., a Pajama Party, Cookie Baking in the Nutrition Department, Olympic Night, the Police and Firefighter Visit, and End of Year Parties.

We stole Cassie and her S.M.I.L.E. buddy Karsen away from shooting hoops for a while to sit down with them and ask them about their S.M.I.L.E. experience. Karsen’s been in the program for most of his life (he’s 23 now and says that he is super old!) so he had a lot of stories to share.

Excerpt From Video:Cassie: So you remember a lot of your S.M.I.L.E. buddies right because you loved coming here so much, and that’s why you remember them all?

A S.M.I.L.E. Story of Two Chum Chums WHY WE

Who is the Acadia S.M.I.L.E. Program? Simply put, the S.M.I.L.E. program is made up of individuals who change the game, raise the bar to another level and always as the rule rather than an exception. Among the 300 plus Acadia students who volunteer each week, are people who have a passion and commitment greater than them-

selves to make a difference in the lives of the people around them. They are inspiring leaders with a unique ability to manage their time, work with others and give back to the community. There is something special about 100 university students waking up on Saturday morning at 8:30am, arriving at the athletic complex with energy and excitement in hopes to make a differ-ence. They truly are remarkable, and they are set, to change the game.

Acadia S.M.I.L.E. Golf Tournament Update

The plans for the Golf Tournament con-tinue, as members of thecommittee are in searchof sponsors and volun-teers. Brochures will be going out bythe end of the week with further inf-ormation aboutbecoming a sponsor. Please contact Michael Del Bel at [email protected].

Cailin MacIsaac Friday S.M.I.L.E. Instructor

“Spending Friday nights with Jenny at S.M.I.L.E. is one of the best op-portunities I’ve been given here at Acadia”

Katie Whitton Saturday S.M.I.L.E. Leader

“We celebrate everyone's accomplish-ments no matter how big or small. You'll see a shy child say hello to someone and you'd think they were a celebrity,

someone will mention a child getting in the pool or joining song time and every-one gets so excited on something that someone not involved in the program would think is just average”

Cassie & Karsen:

Karsen: Yes, I think so.

C: I think that’s probably why. And this has been my only S.M.I.L.E. buddy I’ve had for 3 whole years.

K: And it’s going to be 4 years.

C: And it’s going to be 4 years, I know! Cause I’m coming back next year.

K: Yeah me too!

C: To see you.

Cassie’s S.M.I.L.E. Experience:S.M.I.L.E. has been an unreal experience for me. Working with Karsen for the past three years has been hands down one of my favourite things about Acadia. Getting to hang out with him brightens my day, and we have a lot of fun together. I also re-ally like seeing the unique relationships that other students have with their S.M.I.L.E. buddies. Like Karsen said before, respect is really important at S.M.I.L.E., and you can tell that everyone here truly respects and values each other.

Check them out at the link below on Acadia S.M.I.L.E.’s YouTube channel!

Karsen: “S.M.I.L.E. rocks!” Cassie: “S.M.I.L.E. does rock!”

Active Educationby Roxanne Seaman

The Acadia S.M.I.L.E. Program provides an amazing platform of learning for the student volunteers and the program participants. The student volunteers engage in training at the start of each new semester. The training cov-ers a vast amount of physical activity

programming including the presentation of mod-ules in the following areas: (a) positive behavior programming; (b) FUNdamental movements; (c)

-gramming; (e) assessment; and (f) leadership. It has been extremely positive having specialists from the S.M.I.L.E. Advisory Board present from their areas of expertise during the training ses-sions! We will continue to improve on the training and ongoing support of all educational aspects as the program continues to grow! The student vol-unteers are incredible at taking the educational pieces and turning those important aspects of programming into an environment that is posi-tive, engaging, and fun! You don’t have to look very hard to see active education on any pro-gram day!
