This is a book of all the well-known Christmas Carol favourites. They have been arranged with

amateur musicians in mind ranging from school children to people such as ourselves who want to

participate in some seasonal cheer while making music. The verses to each carol are also included as

an encouragement to those without an instrument to sing along too. The more adventurous among

you may wish to attempt both at the same time! The book has been bound and printed in such a

manner that makes it a popular option for even the youngest musicians.

All proceeds from this publication are going to an overseas charity; the Mathieson Music Trust in

Calcutta, founded by Anup Biswas, an internationally acclaimed cellist. Anup attended an orphanage

in Calcutta. Father Mathieson, who ran the orphanage for over fifty years, introduced him to music

and the cello. The Stratford-upon-Avon Symphony Orchestra were fortunate enough in 2002 to

accompany Anup in an extremely uplifting performance of Dvorak’s cello concerto for which we

shall always be thankful!

Sarah Goodall/ David Alabaster

October 2004

Revising the carols to do this 2nd edition has provided a much needed but most enjoyable opportunity

to re-visit some of the more bizaare harmonies found in the original version for two cellos.

There are now four versions available for different groups of instruments (2 cellos; 2 violins; violin &

cello; flute and viola). I hope this edition has improved the Xmas experience to be found between

these covers.

4. "Sire, the night is darker now, and the wind blows stronger; Fails my heart, I know not how; I can go no longer." "Mark my footsteps my good page, tread thou in them boldly; Thou shalt find the winter's rage freeze thy blood less coldly."

5. In his master's steps he trod, where the snow lay dinted; Heat was in the very sod which the Saint had printed. Therefore, Christian men, be sure, wealth or rank possessing, Ye who now will bless the poor, shall yourselves find blessing.

CHORUS

2. From God our heavenly Father A blessed angel came; And unto certain shepherds Brought tiding of the same; How that in Bethlehem was born The Son of God by name. (CHORUS)

4. Now to the Lord sing praises, All you within this place, And with true love and brotherhood Each other now embrace; this holy tide of Christmas Doth bring redeeming grace. (CHORUS)

3. "Fear not, then," said the angel, "Let nothing you affright; This day is born a Saviour Of a pure virgin bright, To free all those who trust in him From Satan's power and might." (CHORUS)

17The First Noel

CHORUS

5. Then did they know assuredly Within that house the King did lie; One entered it them for to see, And found the Babe in poverty. (CHORUS)

6. Then entered in those Wise Men three, Full reverently upon the knee, And offered there, in His presence, Their gold and myrrh and frankincense. (CHORUS)

7. Between an ox stall and an ass, This Child truly there He was; For want of clothing they did Him lay All in a manger, among the hay. (CHORUS)

8. Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heavenly Lord; That hath made heaven and earth of naught, And with His blood mankind hath bought. (CHORUS)

9. If we in our time shall do well, We shall be free from death and hell; For God hath prepared for us all A resting place in general. (CHORUS)
