“The Hedgehog and the Fox”
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Greetings!
If you could choose to be a fox or a hedgehog, which would be your choice? I believe many would choose to be a
fox. After all, foxes are beautiful, agile, fast, sleek and cunning. Whereas, hedgehogs are known to be small, prickly,
slow, quiet and plodding.
There is an ancient parable in Greek which states: “The fox knows
many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing”. In the story the
fox uses many strategies to catch the hedgehog. It sneaks, chases, pounc-
es, races and so on. But often it goes back unsuccessful, defeated and
disappointed. The fox never learns that the hedgehog knows how to do
one big thing perfectly: defend itself.
Isaiah Berlin, the Russian-British Philosopher, took this parable and used
it to divide people into two groups: Foxes and Hedgehogs.
He contended that foxes pursue many goals and interests at the same time. This makes them so scattered and distract-
ed with many things. They are unable to focus on one thing. On the other hand, hedgehogs focus only on one thing –
the overarching vision which they can achieve. People achieve so much with this hedgehog strategy.
Jim Collins, in his book ‘Good to Great’, uses the ‘Hedgehog Concept’ to describe the strategies successful compa-
nies employ to become from good companies to great companies. Although basically written
for the business world, he says that this concept can be applied also to individuals or groups
of people and organizations.
When an organization has identified its ‘hedgehog concept’, its members must devote all their
energy towards pursuing it. Collins argues that when going gets tough, it is the organizations
that focus on their overarching vision that will succeed and thrive.
As we continue to pursue our vision for Passionists in India and try to renew its mission, we
should never lose sight of the one overarching thing that is at the core of who we are – the
‘Memoria Passionis’! Once we are clear about this core vision, other things will follow.
“Seek first the Kingdom of God and its righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you” (Matt
6:33). And, when we are passionate about the ‘Memoria Passionis’ as the hedgehog concept,
other core values have to be pursued and implemented.
It is my hope that this ‘Hedgehog Concept’ will help us to place the ‘Memoria Passionis’ at the centre of all our un-
dertakings as Passionists in India!
With every good wish for a continued celebration of this Easter Season, I remain
Fraternally Yours,
