Hopetoun P-12 College is a Child Safe School
We welcomed seventeen nervous but eager Yr 7’s to begin their secondary schooling at Hopetoun P-12 College today. We wish them well for the year and look
forward to watching them embrace our values and grow.
Principal’s Report
Welcome Welcome to a new school year. For some, it is a ‘welcome back’ as they are returning for another year whereas for others, it is an open welcome to new students, parents and carers. It is wonderful to have everyone on-board here at Hopetoun P-12 College. We know it is going to be a wonderful year of achievement, of growth, of improvement and of performance for each and everyone of our students. Our ‘mantra’ is meeting the individual needs of all students. We take this statement seriously and we will certainly do our best to meet the needs of all within the structures and resources of our college. I hope everyone had a safe, relaxing holiday and that students are eager to return to their studies.
Staff have spent the past two days preparing for forthcoming classes, renewing curriculum and preparing for the student arrivals. They have also been involved in professional learning activities and preparing for our school review which will span terms 1 and 2.
New Staff I am extremely pleased to be able to welcome four new staff members to our college. Mr Luke Sherman will be teaching mainly English classes while Miss Rhiannon Smith will be working predominately in the Maths domain. Jake Anders is with us to teach Physical Education and Cathy Roberts will be working as a teacher aide, mainly in the P-2 classroom. Welcome to these staff. We wish you all the best for your time here at Hopetoun.
New students We have quite a few new students this year, most of whom are entering Year 7. We welcomed Issy Allan, Madison Castleman, Marni Cook, Jesse Crisp, Belle Heath, Emily Hooton, Lana Horman, Taya Horman, Macey Huf and Coco Landrigan. We also welcome Molly White in Year 8, Marcus Robinson in Year 9, and Brooklyn Hallam and Tyler King in Year 11. Welcome to all of you and I am sure that our students will use their values of respect, responsibility and team work to make all new students feel welcome and part of our school community.
Welcome, also, to the new parents and carers. Hopefully many of you will be able to attend our Big Breakfast next Tuesday morning.
Invite to Big Breakfast The start of the school year is important and well worth celebrating. To acknowledge the start of the school year we invite all parents, carers, students and friends to our annual “Big Breakfast”. Come along and join us to celebrate schooling on Tuesday 4th February. There will be cereal, toast, pancakes and the trimmings, coffee and juice served from 8am at the front steps of the school. Have breakfast, catch up with friends, welcome new members of the community and have a pleasant start to the year. There will be brief ‘welcome’ speeches at about a quarter to nine followed by open classrooms and an information session for VCE parents and students. New teachers will be introduced and new students and their parents will be acknowledged. When the bell goes at five minutes to nine parents and carers are invited to go into the classrooms and year level meetings for a brief ‘hi’ to start the day while parents of students doing VCE subjects are invited to go to the library for an information session. See the details below for further information on these VCE meetings.
At a Glance:
Big Breakfast Tuesday 4th February. 8 am front steps of the school. For all parents, carers, students and staff.
VCE Information Sessions Tuesday 4th February, 9am in Library All together (VCE parents/carers and students) for 15 minutes followed by 10 minute sessions
for each of the Unit 3-4 subject.
Study Skills Over the past few years we have had a group called ‘Elevate’ visit the school and deliver information sessions to students advising them on study skills, planning, how to organise the school day and how to get the best results. The sessions have been well received and have helped many students to organise their study and develop a study/work/life balance. This year we have strengthened and broadened the program so all students in Years 7 to 12 will be involved. Years 10-12 students will have sessions on study skills and time management while the Years 7-9 students will be involved in a ‘Kick Start’ approach to developing study skills.
We have also organised a session for parents where you will be provided with an overview of the messages delivered to the students. The parent session will commence at 3.30pm and will be for about one hour.
