PASTOR’S LETTER Solace in the Midst of Woe…

“Solace in the midst of woe” is one of the phrases in the Sequence for Pentecost, sung or said before the Gospel. In contemporary American English, most of us would probably say “comfort” instead of “solace.”

How does the Holy Spirit bring us comfort? Some of the ways are implied in a prayer addressed to the Holy Spirit elsewhere in the Sequence: “Heal our wounds, our strength renew; on our dryness pour your dew; wash the stains of guilt away; bend the stubborn heart and will; melt the frozen, warm the chill; guide the steps that go astray.”

The Holy Spirit wants to bring us healing, strength, refreshment, forgiveness, conversion, zeal, and direc!on.

This can give us great hope in the face of the understandable discouragement, fears, doubts and anger that many of us Catholics are having in the face of the many troubling, sinful and criminal things that have been happening in the Church. These include the terrible abuse of minors and the some!mes tragically inadequate response to this abuse. I know firsthand the pain, trauma and scars that can result from abuse and con!nue for a life!me.

The Church has always consisted of sinners and saints, and those of us trying to be saints who s!ll sin. We who live in our day have to endure the effects of the sins of our !me. Thank God that, as Jesus said, the gates of hell will not prevail against the Church (Ma%hew 16:18).

Someone recently asked me: “What do you think our Savior would say and do were He physically here on Earth today?” I think he meant what would He do in response to the abuse crisis. I can’t say for sure what He would do, but I think He would con!nue to do what He did as recorded in the Gospels, namely to bear witness to the truth (John 18:37), preach good news to the poor, proclaim release to the cap!ves and recovery of sight to the blind, set at liberty those who are oppressed, proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord (Luke 4:18-19) and seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10).

In other words, I think the Savior would con!nue bringing good into the world instead of wringing His hands about the bad that is going on and has been going on since the sin of our first parents.

This doesn’t mean we should turn a blind eye to evil and suffering. Of course not! That would hardly be loving. We need to do what we can to prevent and limit evil and to bring help and healing to those who have been suffering because of it.

At the same !me, it would be a great victory for the devil if we let the evil that he has inspired cause us to abandon the mission Jesus Christ calls us to con!nue with Him as members of the Church, which is His Body and beloved Bride.

That mission involves the teamwork of the Father, Son, Holy Spirit and all of God’s people. In that teamwork, unity is important. It’s not the !me—nor will it ever be—to leave the One Church established by Christ to manifest God’s love, healing and salva!on.

That unity is seen most clearly in the Most Holy Eucharist, the sacrament of unity. The Holy Spirit is working to bring all people on earth into this unity. He works like the things that symbolize Him in Sacred Scripture—a dove, water, wind and fire—gentle, refreshing, cleansing, changing, purifying and strengthening. May we and all people respond to His gentle ac!ons, which never force us to change, but woo us with all of the infinite love of God.

Happy Pentecost! Father Rudolph

Eucharis"c Adora"on Contact Be#y Kreuter 763-537-1399

You are invited to pray as the Apostles did in the Upper Room. Empowered by the Spirit, the Apostles overcame their fears. Step out in faith. Come and rest with the Lord.

Thank you to everyone who has made a prayerful decision to become an adorer and to those who have discerned an addi!onal hour of prayer each week. May God bless all of you and all of those who remain faithful to their hour(s) of Adora!on. The gi+ of Perpetual Adora!on is so important for a Parish to have and to maintain with at least one adorer each hour.

As of this wri!ng there remain a few hours that need a new adorer. They are Thursdays 8:00 to 9:00 am, Saturdays midnight to 1:00 am (Friday eve to

Saturday morning) and Saturdays 2:00 to 3:00 pm. During the summer months there is always a need for subs!tutes. A new list will be published this month. If you have discerned having your name added to the list, please contact Barb at 763-971-8460 in the next week and state your days/hours of availability and a phone number to contact you. Remember as a subs!tute, you may always state that you are not available when contacted.

Please call Be%y at the above number and let her know what hour you are able to commit to as a regular adorer. She will also answer any ques!ons you may have about Perpetual Adora!on.

SAINT OF THE DAY - BLESSED SILVESTER OF VALDISEVE Silvester was born near Florence, Italy and worked as a carder and bleacher of wool. (Carding is using specially designed combs to prepare wool to be made into cloth.) When he was forty, he entered the Camaldolese monastery of Saint Mary in Florence as a lay brother and became the cook there. He had no formal educa!on, but the monks there, and visitors to the monastery, greatly respected his advice. For example, he tried to get the monks to stop some prolonged and harsh peniten!al prac!ces. When one monk told him that he was troubled by sexual thoughts, Silvester made light of it, telling him that was to be expected and that tempta!on was not the same as sin. Silvester never learned to read, but he had a great devo!on to the Divine Office (Liturgy of the Hours) that the monks chanted and said that he wondered how the hearts of men could remain unbroken at the sounds of such sweet and awe-inspiring words. He le+ this life to be with God at the age of seventy. Blessed Silvester of Valdiseve, pray for us!
