Message from SCDSB Director of Education Kathi Wallace

At the Sept. 28 Board Meeting, it was shared publicly that I will retire as of December 31, 2016. As I’m sure you can imagine, this decision was challenging for me. I love what I do - I have felt this way in every role during my 39 years in this board. It’s truly been an honour to serve the students and families of Simcoe County through-out my career. I’ve had the privilege of working with fantastic staff, parents and community partners. I’ve been surrounded by skilled, passionate and caring people.

My focus remains on our work as I complete my time here. The Board of Trustees have started the search for a new director. We are also now gathering the results of our strategic planning consultation. The input provided by our staff, students, parents and community members will be invaluable to the board and senior administration, including the new director, as they move the system forward.

I am looking forward with optimism to this next stage of my life. It’s a chance to spend some more time with my family. This includes my growing group of beautiful grandchildren who provide that daily reminder of life’s wonder and simple joys. It’s that same reminder I cherish from my days as a classroom teacher.

Message from the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit: Immun-ization Records The Ontario Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) requires the health unit to have up-to-date immunization records for all students attending school. According to the ISPA (2014), students currently in high school are required to be vaccinated against:

Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio and Pertussis (whooping cough) - booster required between 14-16 years old

Measles, Mumps and Rubella - must have two doses after the first birthday Meningococcal Disease - must have one dose after the first birthday & Men-C-ACYW in Grade 7

The health unit does not receive immunization information directly from doctor’s offices. Please contact the health unit each time your child receives a vaccine from their health care provider. If your child’s immunization record on file with the health unit is not up-to-date, they may be suspended from school.

What you can do:

Check – Your child’s yellow immunization card

Contact – Your child’s health-care provider to obtain records, or to get missing vaccinations Share – Go to www.simcoemuskokahealth.org/ to enter the complete record, or fax a completed record to 705-726-3962 Message from the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit: Stay Healthy This School Year! Colds and Influenza spread easily from person to person. These germs can spread directly from person to person when someone coughs or sneezes, or indirectly when germs land on hard surfaces like door knobs, desks, keyboards, or wet tissues and then are touched by some-one. These germs can then enter the body through the eyes, nose or mouth. The most important thing you can do to keep from getting sick and stop the spread of germs to others is wash your hands with soap and warm running water for at least 15 seconds. If your hands are not visi-bly dirty you can use alcohol based hand rub “hand sanitizer” for 15 seconds. Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or cough into your sleeve or upper arm and stay home if you are sick. Teach your kids to do the same! For more tips to keep you and your family healthy this school year, contact Health Connection at 1-877-721-7520 or visit the health unit’s website at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org. Message from the Health Unit: Misusing pain medication is very dangerous One in ten students in Grades 7 to 12 report misusing pain medication, and the majority of them got the drug from someone’s home. Pain medication (opioids) like Tylenol No. 3®, Percocet, morphine and fentanyl can be misused in two ways:

1. If used in ways other than intended by a physician

If used by someone it was not prescribed for. What can you do?

Keep your medications locked up and out of sight

Clean out your medicine cabinet regularly and take left over or ex-pired medication to the pharmacy for safe, free disposal. For more information, visit the health unit’s website at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org or call Health Connection at 721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520.

Student Accident Insurance 2016-17

Student injuries at school, during school events, and extra-curricular

activities (athletics, clubs, and out-of-province/out-of-country trips)

are not covered by the Board or its insurance company. While every

precaution is taken to provide a safe learning environment, accidents

can and do happen. It is essential that all students participating in ex-

tra-curricular activities have adequate insurance coverage for all in-

stances of injury. The Simcoe County District School Board has se-

lected the “insure my kids” program through Old Republic Canada as

an option for students/parents/guardians to consider with regards to

purchasing student accident insurance coverage for the upcoming

school year. The coverage is for 24 hours a day. This insurance offers

a variety of plans and benefits at reasonable annual prices. Coverage

can be purchased online at www.insuremykids.com. Please watch for

your student accident insurance package along with a letter about

requirements for extra-curricular activities and out-of-province or out-

of-country trips.

Marching Band

On November 4th and 5th, the CCI Marching Band headed to Niagara Falls for their annual training weekend. After practicing at a sports field in Brampton and relaxing at Great Wolf Lodge the Friday, the group did a fantastic job performing at the Ontario Music Educators Association's annual conference Saturday morning. The music depart-ment is very proud of all the students for their hard work and profes-sionalism.

This year's marching band is made up of over 100 students from grades 9 through 12, and will be performing in six Santa Claus parades : Owen Sound, Collingwood, Markham, Fenlon Falls, Creemore, and Toronto.

Remembrance Day

Construction Technology

Grade 11 and 12 Construction Technology students have been busy fabricating Holiday Kiosk's for Downtown Collingwood. Home Hardware and the Collingwood BIA delivered and donated material to allow the opportunity for CCI students to get hands-on experience. Students were able to utilize 3D model-ing to visualize, and obtain dimensions for, the builds. Also, the Kiosk' design allows for them to be disassembled for shipping and reassembled at site, where they will be used for selling holiday related items!

Link Crew and Community Service

On October 28th, Our Link Crew leaders (senior role model students helping ease the transition to secondary for new grade 9 students) assisted all grade 9 homerooms in carving 80 pumpkins in our cafe as a team building exercise. The pumpkins were created and deliv-ered to many seniors homes in Collingwood and Wasaga Beach and were given to Collingwood General and Marine Hospital to bring some festive spirit to the Halloween season.

The community partners were very happy to have the donations!

They will be hosting a swim meet at the Cenntenial pool Monday November 21st and then heading to the Universi-ty of Toronto for an overnight meet. Who knows what the Georgian Bay Secondary School Championships will bring for this dedicated group of Fighting Owls on December 13th? An-ticipation is high for amazing performances with lots of BLACK and GOLD up on the podium.

Non-Traditional Trades

For any females interested in participating in non-traditional trades (manufacturing, woodworking, construction etc), there is a field trip on De-cember 1 that you should consider. This is a great opportunity to meet women who are currently working in the trades and have a wealth of knowledge to share. It is at the Nottawasaga Inn in Alliston, it is free and a hot lunch and transportation are provided! See Ms. Nicoll for more details and a field trip form if you are interested.

It’s almost winter: Bus cancellation information for parents

Winter is just around the corner in Simcoe County, and with it comes the possibility of severe weather, challenging winter driving condi-tions and possible bus and school event cancellations.

All information regarding cancelled buses in Simcoe County is posted on the Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium’s bus in-formation website at www.simcoecountyschoolbus.ca. Our school is in the west zone. When buses are cancelled, schools are still open for student learning, unless otherwise noted.

The Consortium and bus operators try to make the decision to cancel school buses before 6 a.m. and make every effort to post announce-ments between 6 and 7 a.m. Inclement weather cancellations are ef-fective for the whole day and buses cancelled in the morning will not run at the end of the day. You can follow the Consortium on Twitter @SCSTC SchoolBus for bus cancellations and other information. You can also subscribe to receive bus delay notifications here: https://scstc.ca/Subscriptions
