Four Ways to Boost Your Mental Health This
Spring
Leaving the winter months can feel a little bit
like a new bud springing from the dark, cold
ground and opening up towards the sun. How-
ever, for some, that revitalized feeling never
comes and instead, depression and anxiety sets
in.
People experiencing symptoms of depression
and anxiety are not alone. More than 6.5 mil-
lion Americans aged 65 or older is affected by
depression according to the National Alliance
of Mental Illness. There is not a single cause to
depression or other mental health issues, nor a
sure-fire way to prevent it. However, there are
ways to improve your chances of preventing
the development of depression symptoms and
other mental illnesses.
Four Ways to Prioritize Your Mental Health
Keep Mentally Active— Playing board
games, enjoying a daily crossword or
participating in a trivia activities are all
ways to exercise your mind. Stimulating
your brain by learning new skills, playing
games that challenge your mind and in-
creasing your social interaction may aid
in keeping yourself mentally sharp.
Keep Physically Active—Another way to
stimulate the brain is to increase the
blood flow to your brain with physical
exercise. Even something as simple as
sixty minutes of dancing each week can
help reduce the symptoms of depres-
sion.
Socialize—Loneliness and isolation can
make depression symptoms even more
pronounced. Participating in events, hav-
ing coffee with a friend and talking to
loved ones on the phone are all ways to
stimulate the brain and minimize the
symptoms of depression.
Eat a healthy diet—Consuming lots of veg-
etables and good fats (such as fatty fish,
nuts and olives) has many benefits, in-
cluding the minimizing the risks of cogni-
tive decline!
Take advantage of the spring bounty of fresh
vegetables, the longer hours of sunlight and
the many fun activities going on in our commu-
nity and prioritize your mental health this
March.

You’re Invited! Resident Highlight: Henry Bookout
Meet Henry Bookout. A resident here at Bozeman Lodge for almost 7 years
now. Henry was born in Barney, Alabama in 1931 and lived there until he was about
19. At that time he joined the Air Force. He served one year in Korea, one year in Pe-
sawat, Pakistan, two years in France, and four years in Germany. He did accounting
and finance work for 22 years. He met the love of his life, Sarah Nell, and married her
on June 15, 1952. She was Sara without the “h” but changed it to Sarah, he doesn’t
know why!
They lived together in France for a short time and she also accompanied him to Ger-
many. He traveled all over Europe and the Middle East. While living abroad Sarah
purchased all their crystal and table settings to bring back to the US because it was so
much cheaper over there. When they returned he spent four months at the Maxwell
Air Force Base and then retired from the Air Force. He then went to work for the
State of Alabama as a tax auditor and retired for a second time in 1991.
Sarah and Henry have two children, both girls. Their first child, Janice, died just be-
fore her first birthday. Sue, their second daughter, lives here in Bozeman, has a doc-
torate and runs her own business helping people with Autism.
Sarah had Parkinson’s disease and when she became so ill that Henry needed help
caring for her they moved to Montana to be close to Sue and her husband, Jim. They
moved into a house first for a short time and then found the Bozeman Lodge. When
they moved in it was still very new and there were only 21 residents living here. Sa-
rah passed away just one month ago on January 16, 2016. Her birthday was on St.
Patrick’s Day and she loved the color green and margaritas!
Henry used to be a hobby golfer until his legs started giving out and he can no longer
stand for long periods of time. He also used to call BINGO here at Bozeman Lodge
and liked it much better when they gave out prizes.
Henry is a wonderful person. If you see him scooting around in his wheelchair stop
him and have a chat. He is full of wonderful knowledge and has a great sense of hu-
mor.
