Over the past few years we have focused on ensuring that we are able to secure and effectively manage growth opportunities. In preparation for the upturn in economic conditions we engaged additional operational staff and recruited additional personnel within the Business Development, Marketing, HR, HSQE, Training and IT departments. These appointments were made to ensure that we have the appropriate skills, together with robust management systems and processes in place, to manage the increasing volume and complexity of our work.

There are many new faces within the business and, with anticipated growth exceeding 23% this year, it is vital that new staff are supported as they settle into their new roles and that we remain vigilant in respect of health & safety, quality, cost and commercial performance.

We are well placed, and with the current improvement in economic conditions and client confidence we have seen a significant increase in opportunities, such that, we now have record levels of work in hand and a substantial pipeline of good future prospects. Our challenge in the forthcoming period is to ensure that we deliver results for all stakeholders.

The employee satisfaction survey has been completed and whilst there are areas identified for improvement, 82% of respondents either strongly or partly agree that our businesses are great places to work, which is an excellent result.

The consultation, drafting and communicating of strategic objectives is being completed for all subsidiaries and the published Five Point Plans will provide a mechanism to target and measure our progress over the coming months.

In summary, we are seeing an increase in activity across the Group, an improvement in business systems and Group budgets being achieved.

Thank you,

Kelvin White, Group Chief Executive

Group HSQE

His submission highlighted a contractor who was excavating without following correct procedures. Daniel stopped the work, advised the contractor, took relevant corrective action and recorded the near miss. Daniel is seen receiving his cheque for £150.00 from Ray Hooley, senior HSQE advisor.

Construction and Building Olav Lawrence joined the company on 14 October 2014 as HSQE Manager and will be responsible for all Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental issues within RBC, RBB and Wilkins. Ray Hooley, Darren Law and Peter Ramsdale will report to Olav.

We are pleased to announce that Raymond Brown Construction Ltd have recently passed their BM TRADA Audit and received a Constructionline certificate for 2014 / 2015.

Aggregates and Waste Solutions

In early October Nick Muir transferred over to Raymond Brown Aggregates and Waste Solutions, and now works alongside Ben Jacobs (Quality), James Ryder (Environment), Jerry Phillips (Quality Control) and a new health and safety advisor due to start in November.

The new department started with a two day encounter with an external ISO auditor at Brickworth Quarry, Casbrook Park and the Nursling office. This was an audit of our Environmental Management System and also the first of the newly registered Quality Management System. With assistance from Mark Renault, Justin Ebbutt and their respective site teams the audit was a success without any non-compliances raised. The

Health & Safety, Quality and EnvironmentWith the recent expansion and growth of the Raymond Brown Group and its companies, the Group HSQE department has been restructured to best provide a service tailored to their individual needs. The Group can now boast two dedicated safety departments, one concentrating on construction and building (managed by Olav Lawrence) and the other focused on aggregates and waste (managed by Nick Muir).

challenge now is to introduce our EMS to our new processing sites and develop our QMS to cover more of our aggregate and waste operations. Nick Muir commented: “We are off to a good start with the ISO audit but we must all remain vigilant and focused on the hazards and risks we encounter on a daily basis. Let’s not forget we operate in a high risk industry. The news is full of reports of serious injury from defective machine guarding, pedestrians struck by vehicles, fires at waste transfer stations and pollution incidents. My team look forward to working with you all in recognising these hazards and working together to continually reduce risks or eliminate them to ensure that we continue to provide a safe place to work.”

St John Ambulance App for Smart Phones

The St John Ambulance have recently launched a new smart phone app which is free to download. We highly recommend downloading this easy to use app which provides the latest first aid advice and protocols for dealing with emergency situations, together with voiced instructions.

The app does not replace the benefits of learning first aid on a proper course, nor is it as comprehensive as a full first aid manual. However, when there is an emergency it will help you to know what to do to in those few crucial moments when basic knowledge of first aid can make a huge difference.

The Raymond Brown Aggregates Directors joined Ron as he picked up his shovel to break the ground at the Roke Manor Quarry in Romsey. The site has been seven years in development and achieved planning permission back in 2011. It involves the extraction of 750,000 tonnes of sand and gravel at a rate of 125,000 tonnes per year. As the mineral is extracted, the site will be filled with inert construction material and afterwards, restored back to agricultural land at existing levels.

The project involves a 30-year woodland management plan with mitigation for dormice which were found on site during early investigations. This will involve a number of improvements to the natural habitat, including additional tree planting in accordance with the approved landscaping plan.

Mark Isaac, managing director of Raymond Brown Aggregates stated “This is an exciting new opportunity for Raymond Brown. We are an environmentally responsible organisation, operating a number of sand and gravel quarries within Hampshire, Dorset and Berkshire.

We pride ourselves on our sustainable and pro-active approach in dealing with our environmental, social and economic impacts.”

Raymond Brown educates over 1,000 local school children as part of National Recycling Awareness Week For the seventh year running, Raymond Brown has welcomed local school children to its Rookery Farm Aggregate Recycling Facility near Fareham to coincide with National Recycling Awareness Week.

The initiative, which includes class lessons, activities at their own schools and a site tour of the Facility, has directly educated over 1,000 children aged 7-9 years. The event is arranged and funded by Raymond Brown Aggregates staff and covers a range of learning objectives from the National Curriculum, targeting Geography, History, Science, Maths and Citizenship.

This year, a total of 150 children from Parkgate and Whiteley Primary Schools took part. The interactive lessons at both the schools and onsite focused on rocks, soils and recycling awareness.

Cllr Seán Woodward (pictured), Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment at Hampshire County Council has always supported the project and joined one of the classes on their site tour. Cllr Woodward said: “Rookery Farm is a valuable resource, achieving high recycling rates which contribute greatly to the county’s waste management performance. During National Recycling Week Raymond Brown provide the children with a great opportunity to see first hand how waste can be recycled into a useable product. ”

After the event, the children from both Parkgate and Whiteley Primary Schools were given recycled cotton bags. A 5p charge is set to be introduced by the Government in 2015 to help reduce the number of plastic bags, and Raymond Brown created a competition whereby the school children were invited to decorate their new bags with their favourite part of the site visit. The competition had a total of 150 entries, all of which undertook an extensive judging process by the Raymond Brown directors, who were looking for the most creative designs. A winner was picked from each school and both were awarded a £25.00 voucher.

Bag designs included the aggregate wash plant, loading shovels, weighbridge, sand stockpiles and staff.

The Raymond Brown Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA) Processing Facility at Ardley is now in full operation.

Raymond Brown Aggregates was chosen by Viridor earlier this year to build and operate its latest IBA processing facility at the new Energy Recovery Facility in Ardley.

The brand new custom built IBA processing plant has been constructed over the past three months, with the testing and commissioning successfully completed in September.

The first lot of Oxfordshire ash has now been processed and the facility is now fully operational. To mark this occasion, Rod Lerwell, Viridor general manager and Mark Isaac, Raymond Brown Aggregates managing director, cut the ribbon to mark the new IBA Processing Facility’s official opening, see top photo.

14

FEATURE : Ardley IBA Processing FacilityRaymond Brown has invested over £2m in installing a state-of-the-art IBA processing plant, and the 15-year contract with Viridor will see us producing around 75,000 tonnes of IBA aggregate each year.

The raw ash is brought across to Raymond Brown’s processing area, where it is ‘aged’, processed to remove ferrous and non-ferrous metals and then graded to meet BS EN and Highways Agency Specifications.

IBA aggregate is a sustainable and cost effective alternative to Type 1, which is otherwise imported into Oxfordshire from hard rock quarries in the Midlands and West Country. This secondary aggregate consists of fused clinker, ceramics, glass, stone and concrete and has been widely used in construction for nearly 20 years, with over seven million tonnes used to date within the UK.

Andrew Smith, Joint managing director of Smiths said: “We are very pleased to have formed this joint venture with Raymond Brown. We have a lot in common with them being a similar sized, privately owned company with strong family values. Not only that but to sell this sustainable recycled aggregate completes the circle of the recycling process at the Energy Recovery Facility, which has to be good for all of us.”

Smiths are located near the Energy Recovery Facility in Ardley and will be taking orders for IBA aggregate sales from October 2014. Raymond Brown Aggregates will provide technical support as part of this partnership.

Our ‘less is more strategy’ is continuing with further postcode areas being removed in August to ensure that we now only serve customers within a 15-mile / 25 minute radius of our recycling facility. We are refilling our lorries with more local work which has resulted in transport costs being reduced by £7 per skip and £6 per RoRo. We are currently forecasting savings of over £180k per annum, as a result of this strategy.

Online and credit card sales continue to grow with an improving online presence and we are on target to exceed our £1.1m target for credit card sales this year. This is being helped with the launch of our new mobile sites for brownSkips.com and chiltonSkips.com.

We have also set out to improve communication and engagement with staff, drivers and operatives. We’ve still got work to do in this area but we have communicated the strategy to all employees and have held three sets of driver briefings.

New Staff and Training SuccessesRaymond Brown Waste Solutions are pleased to welcome Catherine Kolbe to the A303 team who has joined as PA to the directors. The team was however, sorry to see sales representative Harry Weston leave in August after over three years of service. To manage this change, Terry Stone is now responsible for business development in the Oxfordshire and Berkshire areas and Dwain Brice now heads up the office team with responsibility for customer service.

Well done to Justin Ebbutt (left) and Peter Lomas (right) who have both recently completed their WAMITAB qualifications. As a result of this, Raymond Brown are now proud to say that they have a minimum of two COTC holders on all of the waste sites.

Congratulations also goes to Jayne Smith, administration assistant based at the A303 offices. Jayne has successfully completed her AAT Level 2 and 3 qualifications. Jayne is now starting Level 4 and will finish this in 2015.

Raymond Brown steals the show at RWM 2014

“The branding was excellent and the stand location was as good as it gets.

Although a tiring few days, all our staff in attendance were very enthused about promoting the business.” Kelvin White, Group Chief Executive

The newly designed 2014 stand was much larger than previous years and with three open sides and situated in a main thoroughfare on the end of an aisle, it attracted a great deal of the 13,000 passing visitors in attendance. There were a wide range of promotional products available, a coffee machine, and two custom made mini skips filled with chocolates and sweets, which went down very well with visitors as well as staff.

A bespoke rolling video was playing across two televisions and specifically produced brochures were strategically placed on the corners of the stand, demonstrating the wide range of services the Group offers in this sector, including:

• Construction• IBA Aggregate• Wharfery• Waste Solutions

This year’s RWM Exhibition is confirmed as the Raymond Brown Group’s best yet.

The planning for the exhibition began back in 2013, shortly after the last show. A lot of hard work has to go into the organisation and preparation of the stand and its pre-marketing.

This year saw the RWM team focus on the brand and specific services which we wanted to promote. The stand was clearly a hit as it recieved excellent feedback, plenty of visitors and a range of new business enquiries.

The staff manning the stand also wore a uniform this year so that visitors could clearly identify Raymond Brown personnel as they approached. This worked very well as the stand attracted a lot of interest, with a consistent flow of visitors approaching it throughout the three days.

It was agreed by all that RWM 2014 was a great success. This year really raised the profile of the Group and improved awareness of the brand and our services amongst target audiences in the industry.

Well done to all the staff involved in making the show a hit for Raymond Brown. Now, with the same stand position booked again for next year, the planning will shortly begin for RWM 2015.

An Update on Forest Gate...Across the road from the Group Head Office in Ringwood, Raymond Brown Construction’s Southern Division are currently undertaking the £1.5m redevelopment of Forest Gate, an old gas works site. The project is being managed by Richard Knight and the scheme, which was subject to strict planning conditions in relation to ground remediation and sustainable drainage design principles, involves the construction of access roads, deep drainage, new services, kerbing and footpaths to service a new industrial development.

The initial drainage design was based on the principle of containment using 174m of box culverts, hydrobrake manholes and a pumping chamber. Through Early Contractor Involvement, our team has re-designed the drainage using ovoid pipes, thereby reducing delivery periods and mitigating costs.

The drainage was installed below the high water table in excess of four metres deep and therefore pumping and dewatering was required into a lagoon to control the water levels. The trenches were lined with Visqueen GX Hydrocarbon UDG Protection Membrane to protect the controlled waters from potential leachate contamination.

During the development works, contaminated ground, not previously identified was discovered, together with unmarked live services across the site. These were dealt with by the site team both safely and within the original programme period.

The site was also recently used as part of a photoshoot for a local County Council campaign which is due to be released in January 2015. Our works are due for completion in the New Year and once built, the industrial estate will be home to the Southern Division’s new offices.

The first pile has been successfully driven by the project team, in the Royal Southern Yacht Club’s most ambitious construction scheme to date, the creation of the Prince Philip Yacht Haven.

Raymond Brown Construction’s Southern Division were appointed Principal Contractor to this complex project earlier this year.

The need for this major construction project arose as a direct result of the deteriorating condition of the Royal Southern’s sea wall, therefore, the Club decided to make a virtue of necessity and improve its berthing facilities. The result is a crucial construction scheme that will: • Stabilise the waterfront land for generations to come.• Provide some 70 walk-ashore berths for motor and sailing boats available at all states of the tide. • State-of-the-art services . • Flood protection for the shoreside facilities. • A slipway for launching Optimists and other dinghies.

Work will be completed in three phases with completion planned for April / May 2015.

Industrial BuildingsRaymond Brown Construction’s run of work winning successes have led the Southern Division to securing two new exciting industrial build projects. The first, with a contract value of £2.2m, is for the design and construction of a new Coastal Safety Training Hub and Coastguard Rescue Station for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency at Daedalus, Lee-on-Solent.

The second award is for the construction and fit out of a contact lense manufacturing facility, a flammable storage tank farm and access roadways for GEO Chemicals UK at Hythe, worth £3m. The new building, comprises a piled, heavy duty concrete slab, a steel portal frame building with brick and block infill and aluminium polyester profile sheet roofing. The works also include the installation of air handling /conditioning units, lighting, power and fire protection.

Key milestone in Prince Philip Yacht Haven Development

Watching the first pile being driven, David Mead, Commodore of the Royal Southern Yacht Club said: “As Commodore I am proud to have witnessed the first pile being driven for the Prince Philip Yacht Haven, an enhanced facility that will be enjoyed by, and protect our members and their floating assets for many years to come. I take this opportunity to thank all our members who have helped to make this happen.”

Raymond Brown Construction managing director, Guy Hardacre, has commented: “We are absolutely delighted to have been selected by such a prestigious organisation to undertake the construction of the Prince Philip Yacht Haven. It is an exciting project for us and it is fantastic to be delivering a facility which will serve future generations of yachtsmen. Pendennis Wet Basin & Wet DocksPendennis Shipyard is one of the world’s leading superyacht builders, and one of only two such companies in the UK. Situated in the docks in Falmouth, the £7.5m works currently being undertaken by the Southern Division, comprise the design and construction of a new 7,000m² wet basin formed out to sea using 200m of 7m wide sheet piled ‘fingers’, mass filled concrete with pre-cast edge beams and an insitu reinforced concrete topping. The team also have to undertake:

• Protection of the seagrass and replacement of six chain moorings with a flexible system that does not scour the seabed, as per agreed mitigation measures with Natural England.• Creation of a new quay wall for the outer basin, comprising twin rows of steel sheet piles with mass concrete fill between them.• Construction of a new entrance structure and installation of a buoyant caisson dock gate.• Construction of a new 13.5m wide travel hoist berth within the wet basin, to take a 600 tonne boat hoist.

The 420 tonne concrete cill structure has to be constructed on land, floated into position and then sunk to millimetre accuracy. Following installation of the gate, the dock will be pumped dry, the basin floor lowered and the third ‘finger’ constructed using traditional shuttering methods to create a 13.5m wide dock to house a 600t boat hoist to lift the superyachts. Works also involve the installation of fenders, mooring bollards, services and surfacing. Once complete in Spring 2015, the new wet basin will enable Pendennis Shipyard to hold back the tide and service the lift out and fit out of yachts next to their existing facility.

Over the Summer, we were delighted to welcome His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent to cut the first sod of turf at the Coastal Safety Training Hub and Coastguard Rescue Station in Daedalus, Lee-on-Solent.

The purpose built facility will provide Coastguard Rescue Officers with essential training and skills to help them deal with emergency situations on the UK coastline. The construction involves a lightweight steel frame structure building together with an eight metre high ‘cliff face’ training wall to simulate ‘real life’ conditions and instruct teams on how to carry out cliff rescues. This climbing wall will descend four metres into a pit to enable Coastguard Rescue Officers to gain experience of working in enclosed spaces.

Kelvin White, group chief executive, was there to personally welcome HRH Prince Michael of Kent to the site.

Kelvin commented: “This is our fourth project with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and we are delighted to continue our strong relationship with them.

Providing the best facility is of paramount importance to ensure that they are able to undertake vital training for their front line personnel. With an excellent track record in delivering these projects, I am confident that our project team will construct a first rate training hub for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.”

The project is scheduled for completion in Spring 2015.

Greenwich Swing Bridge is lifted into place

Greenwich Reach Swing Bridge has now been lifted into place by the Raymond Brown Construction South East Division The photo above shows placement of the midspan deck section by a 300T fully rigged mobile crane. The backspan has already been placed and connected to the slewing bearing, the forespan is just out of shot and awaiting the next lift onto the temporary works supports, which was carried out later the same day. The bridge deck itself was constructed off site in three sections, namely the backspan, midspan and forespan.

Honourable Society of the Inner Temple

This scheme comprises of hard and soft landscaping works within the courtyard car park to the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple. The works include the repair and relaying of existing paving, extension of pavements, improvements to street furniture and installation of charging points for electric cars. The project will also involve the removal of certain trees and the planting of replacements.

The site is of great historical importance and interest. It can trace its occupation back to the Roman Era but it is most well known for its use in the middle medieval period. In the middle of the 12th century, the Military Order of the Knights Templar built a fine round church by the Thames, which became known as the Temple Church. Two centuries later, after the abolition of the Order in 1312, lawyers came to occupy the Temple site and buildings and they are still using the site today.

The 16th century was an age of expansion for the Inner Temple and new buildings were constructed to accommodate its growing membership. The Great Fire of London of 1666 destroyed many of the Inner Temple buildings and a series of subsequent fires and 20th century war damage were responsible for further losses. The Hall, Treasury Office, Benchers’ Rooms and Library were all reconstructed after World War II. However, the best preserved chambers buildings in the Inner Temple can be found in the fine terrace at the east end of the site. Much of the courtyard hasn’t changed since 1670, this project will be the first real aesthetic change since then.

The Raymond Brown Construction Rail Division has been busy working on a number of sites across the South.

A £500k scheme to undertake minor works at 14 First Great Western stations was completed in April. Following on from the success of this scheme, tender enquiries have been received to undertake further similar schemes.

Hayle StationThe Access for All scheme at Hayle station was successfully completed in July with an official opening ceremony held on Saturday 23 August 2014 attended by First Great Western, Network Rail and Cornwall Council.

St. Austell StationSignificant progress has been achieved at the Access for All scheme being undertaken at St. Austell Station with lifts and a new footbridge now installed. A video taken showing the bridge installation can be viewed on http://vimeo.com/107239786. Completion of this scheme is due to be achieved later this year.

A project to overhaul and fit out an existing dilapidated platform building is also underway at St. Austell. The original structure dates back to the Great Western Railway days and care is being taken to retain as much of the original building as possible.

Theale StationAn enabling scheme to relocate an existing culvert at Theale station has been completed paving the way for the installation of a new two span footbridge complete with three staircases and lifts. Raymond Brown continues to work with First Great Western’s design team to complete design works for this £2.8m scheme and are hopeful of an award in the near future.

EarthworksOsborne has recently appointed Raymond Brown Construction to provide Early Contractor Involvement on a scheme to repair the causeway supporting the Weymouth line as it crosses Holes Bay in Poole. This scheme is expected to commence on site in late 2015.

Rail Division work spreads across the SouthCar Parks New car parks have been successfully completed at both Folkestone West and Cheltenham Spa Stations. Both schemes have been designed to minimise environmental impacts. With the scheme at Folkestone West incorporating a SUDS drainage system, whilst the scheme at Cheltenham Spa using Gridforce/Gravel surfacing eliminates the requirement for a drainage system.

TunnelsSignificant investment has been made in developing Raymond Brown’s tunnel maintenance and repair capability including undertaking a trial installation of a RAM Arch support system in a disused rail tunnel at Alfreton, Derbyshire. This trial was successfully completed under ‘possession’ conditions. Tunnel maintenance and repair schemes are currently being developed with Osborne, with commencement on site expected in early 2015.

Rhiwbina Flood Defence SchemeThe Raymond Brown Wales & Renewables Division has been working on a scheme which involves extensive public liaison and communication with local stakeholders.

The Rhiwbina Flood Defence Scheme is worth £1.1m and the contract involves flood defence works along a 2.5km length of an existing stream/brook to include the following:

• RC or brick with concrete infill floodwall approx 800m length in various sections along the stream. This will involve micro- piling to approx 70m length of the wall.• Landscaping of existing park area into an overflow. attenuation pond with 14,000m3 of off site disposal.• Installation of new and upgrade of existing culverts.• Channel restoration works at various locations.

Raymond Brown have provided a Public Information Point for the local residents to visit at anytime during the contract to ask any questions. The first initiative will be to make wood available from the 40+ trees that the site team will be felling for the residents to use. The team are asking residents for a small donation towards the Tenovus charity, in return.

Local Councillors, Adrian and Jayne visited the Public Information Centre, pictured with Raymond Brown staff.

From the outset, it was made clear that disruption must be kept to a minumum and that the residents were kept fully aware of the works taking place around their homes. The site team has already received a complimentary letter sent to Cardiff Council from a local resident, passing their thanks on for the respect shown by the site team during a funeral of one of the other local residents.

Raymond Brown has also donated £400 to the local rugby team, Rhiwbina Squirrels which will be presented to them within the next few weeks.

Clydach Fish Pass

Raymond Brown Wales & Renewables Division is proud to have recently completed the construction of a £116k larinier fish pass to enable passage upstream of a 2m vertical, masonry weir. Wind Turbines take position at Garlenick Wind Farm

Two wind turbines have been erected for our client Airvolution on the Garlenick Estate this week. Raymond Brown was awarded the Balance of Plant contract to construct 2 Vestas V90s at Garlenick Wind Farm in Cornwall. The turbines are 110m high to the tip of the blade and are expected to produce enough electricity annually to power around 2,400 households.

James Redmond, construction manager at Airvolution, said: “Most of the construction work is now complete and this week we entered the most exciting phase with the turbines being lifted into place. As well as producing clean electricity, we are committed to bringing benefits to local businesses by investing in the local economy. Together with our main contractor Raymond Brown we have ensured

that a significant proportion of our budget for the groundworks has gone to local businesses.”

This scheme sits alongside two other projects that we are currently constructing for Airvolution. Turbines are shortly due at East Youlstone Wind Farm which is a Balance of Plant for 2 Vestas V80s and Daintree Wind Farm a Balance of Plant for 2 Vestas V90s. Airvolution continue to be a key client for Raymond Brown with our fifth project due to start later this year in Cumbria.
